Up-Down KC

Up-Down KC

Reviews Summary

Up-Down is a highly popular arcade bar with a nostalgic vibe, offering a wide range of classic games, pinball machines, and skee-ball. The friendly staff, affordable token prices, and daily drink specials (especially Sundays' beer-and-tokens deal) are frequently praised. The pizza, particularly the mac & cheese slice, is a standout. While most games are well-maintained, a few may occasionally be out of order. The lively atmosphere, outdoor patio, and lack of kids make it ideal for adult fun. Some note limited space during peak hours, but overall, it’s a beloved spot for casual outings, dates, or group hangouts.

Customer Reviews

Great place to relax and unwind. They have a wide variety of classic games to play at 25 cents per play. They have great happy hour prices, for example, tonight they had $2 pizza slices. The employees are super friendly and helpful. It is a great atmosphere with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. The food is limited to pizza only, but it is pretty good.

What a fun place!!! Whether you were raided in the 80's or not, this place is great! We have gone to the Up Down in Des Moines and loved it. Same owners, but the vibe is a little different. Bartender was super helpful and friendly. He said they now will have 6 places. They have one in Nashville and are even opening up one in Birmingham. We ordered pizza from a different counter and the service was good. Make sure you go around everywhere as there are games hidden around every corner and level. We parked d

I wish every city had one of these! Genuine arcade and bar. No kids allowed! Lots of games tucked into every multi-level corner. Nice patio to eat on. Bartenders were all friendly. Great beer selection and the pizza was really good. This is my new go-to place when stopping in KC!

Bartenders were very nice. Atmosphere was a vibe. No issues with ordering. Only had issues with Aliens game player 2 being wonky all the other games I played worked great and reminded me of some arcade games from my childhood! Highly recommend as a hangout. Stay inside if you don't like cigarette smoke of course as patio is smoke friendly.

Fun environment, great beverages and pizza, inclusive environment, and amazing staff! This is a favorite place for us to get together and relax - especially with the beautiful patio. Definitely worth the drive for us! I'm looking forward to my next visit!

Good drinks and great games! Go during your birthday to get 40 free tokens! After 9pm the place starts to get busy but it's still manageable! The bartenders are amazing and friendly! I will be going back during the summer because it seems like they have great outdoor seating!

I love this place, but it's a one-star establishment until the men's restroom has more than one stall. Same for women's if its the same in there, but I dont know because I haven't been in there. The moment I find out another stall is coming, this place becomes 5 stars.

Such a fun location to go out! They have tons of games. I love skee ball and got to play with my friends while having a beverage, it felt like a fun Chuck E. Cheese for adults!

A great date night spot! The games were a lot of fun and the bartenders were friendly and attentive. It was a Sunday night qe went and wasn't too busy. They had ran out of some of their specialty drinks but the bartender still made delicious drinks. BRING CASH and ID. You cannot enter without your ID- they will scan it at the door. The games work with tokens and the token machine only takes cash. The machines were a lot of fun, there was pacman, the Simpsons, pinball machines, and many others. There were

It's always a blast here. Take good care of most machines, especially given the heavy traffic. Gets too busy sometimes. The best day to go is Sunday afternoon and get the 6 beers and a bunch of tokens for a heck of a deal! Tokens come in a flipping sweet fanny. The Zaa is solid too.

Up-Down bar is an absolute blast! It's the perfect combination of a fun arcade and a great bar. The atmosphere is vibrant, and there's something for everyone, from classic arcade games to pinball machines. The drink menu is fantastic, with a great selection of craft beers and cocktails. It's an awesome spot to hang out with friends, play some games, and enjoy a laid-back night out. The staff is super friendly, and the overall vibe is always lively and welcoming. Whether you're a seasoned gamer or just looki

I only went for the games. The guy behind the bar counter was very nice and gave me more tokens when Dig It Doug ate my money and didn't work. I enjoyed playing Qbert for the first time.... and about 4 times after that. I was most successful at a pinball game. It was a hot day and rather hot inside the building too. But I enjoyed looking around and watching some girls freaking out over their high skee ball score.

Not as many games as the Nashville or Oklahoma City locations, but there is still plenty to do to keep you occupied and having fun. Pizza was good when I went, wouldn't fault them if it wasn't perfect anyway.

One of the best bars I've ever been to. A wide on tap selection, excellent pizza, and loads of arcade and pinball games to choose from. Best of all, the games were all very cheap compared to other similar places I've been. I got a slice of the meat pizza and it was fantastic. Keep in mind you can buy tokens from your bar tab.

There's an up down near where we live and it's a little bigger than this one but this one still maintains that nice vibe and they have lots of fun things to do. It was very nice to spend a few hours here playing arcades. The Thursday coin special is amazing if you're mostly here for the games

Visited from out of town and had a blast!! Went twice while I was in town and on one of the days received free tokens!! Fun selection of nostalgic games to play alone or with friends. Small upstairs area with mostly pinball machines and a few more arcade games. All of the drinks were great and very reasonably priced. Food options are available and the place has a very laid back vibe.

Too much fun! Great bartenders. Superb games a little bit of everything. Great crowd. Mixture of ages. Everybody is having fun. PROTIP: go there on your birthday and get 40 free tokens.

Chilled games bar. Awesome selection of games that took me back to my childhood. Great selection of beers all at reasonable prices. Excellent way to spend a few hours in the afternoon.

My family and I made a fun Sunday night trip out now that the whole bunch is 21 and over and had a great time.. Sundays host a 6 beer with 80 tokens in a fanny pack for $25 deal which was perfect for us . We played all of our classic favorite games and enjoyed really great pizza (huge slices of pizza) This is definitely a fun night out .

I occasionally take a walk over when I'm (mostly) by myself yet want to be *around* other people. I've yet to be at another bar that meets that criteria in addition to not feeling an awkward loss for 'what to do' at the same time. Definitely have made a lot of fond ?m?e?m?o?r?i?e?s? weird stories. This is my first year, of five-ish years, where I actually went and 'cashed in' on the birthday tokens, tried the pizza (the grease was real and did not disappoint?), and was there with winter holiday decoratio

They have several old school arcade games and pinball machines. Machines take tokens. The bar music is so loud that you can't always hear the music/sound from the games. Some of the games buttons are not as responsive as a well up kept machine would be. Layout is also fairly crowded. More of a bar with games than a game place where you can go to drink.

Horrible experience last night and the staff is downright rude. I was out celebrating my best friend?s engagement and thought this place would be a fun place to go. My friend and I had went to the bathroom and were in the stall for no more than 2 minutes before an employee pounded on our door and told us we needed to get out. My friend had not even had a chance to button her pants up yet. I opened the door and we exchanged a few words and my friend went to talk to the manager. I was honestly shocked that we

21+ arcade style classic games for 1, 2, or a group. Took on pin ball, frogger, pac man, basketball, and tetris all while sipping in a beverage of choice

Great place to grab good drinks and enjoy classic arcade games. The drinks were reasonably priced and I spent less on drinks than I have at any other bar. You may occasionally run into the issue of people staying on one cabinet for long periods of time, though. Also, I would be careful with the Punch-Out! game, as it ate my tokens without letting me play. Other than that, it's a great place.

Best pizza and atmosphere in town! Nothing beats the patios in spring and summer time. If you are visiting KC, new to town and been born and raised here, Up-Down is a must!

Tons of arcade games, tables and chairs, space on the patio, good music, and it's not so loud that you can't have a conversation with the person next to you. An enjoyable bar, even for a group of 30 year olds whose late nights at the bar are way in the past.

Great choice in arcade and other games from Mario kart to skeeball. Great drinks and brilliant outdoors area for smoking or when the weather's good. Couldn't have enjoyed ourselves more whether we went on a night out or during the day.

Great place, was absolutely plastered, and had a blast playing arcade games while drinking! Highly recommend this spot!

Classic old school games!!! Me and some friends had a great Saturday afternoon at Up Down. Service is good, ski ball is the best. Had a great MK2 battle with a friend. Really brought back the memories. Drink prices were good. I wish more cities had a place like up down KC!

Nostalgic vibe, great for a night out! Retro games, friendly staff and outside seating. Have to purchase tokens to play. Upcoming Halloween events!

This place is so much fun and they have the most classic arcade games!!!

Be prepared with cash and ID. Only go if you are with people or very extroverted. The space is small and can't be a bit of a cramp. It does get slightly crowded with a decent selection of old school games worth playing. The drink prices are slightly more expensive compared to the rest of the nation in the city area. The games are as cheap as we know and love from back in the day. I did not try the food.

Fun atmosphere, lots of great classic games. I particularly enjoyed the amount and variety of pinball machines. Clever seasonal drink specials. Nice outside patio areas of you want to chill and take a break. Had fun chatting with people playing classics like Turtles in Time and The Simpsons.

A neat old school experience. Lots of old video games. Some obscure ones. Lots of variety of drinks, including many taps. Prices are slightly high on beer. Staff was friendly. There is surprisingly good pizza. Love the professional wrestling Summer Slam video on TV.

No, you wanna have a good time. This is where you want to be. We're talking video games we're talking tic tac, toe, we're talking foursquare, let's go people, it doesn't get any better than a place where you can party like you were nineteen seventy five, and the people watching is insane.Have you been downtown before? This is the place you gotta go

Super cozy and decent selection of games. Pizzas by the slice were also huge. Definitely on the radar to revisit!

Perfect place for a few drinks and to chill for an evening. Loads of arcade games to play this is a really fun bar with huge slices of pizza and other foods served until late.

The vibes here are immaculate. Came around 5 PM on a Saturday (in the Winter) and it was PACKED. Get here early! Tokens are pretty cheap, drinks are tasty, staff is great. Might have to wait to play games, otherwise it's pretty chill in here. Definitely coming back for patio season :)

Awesome bar! Even if you don't want to play any of the games, the two floor patio is amazing, especially in the summer!

Such a fun place. Tokens are cheap and they have plenty of deals on drinks! They have soft drinks as well. Definitely will be coming often. Friendly staff as well!

Awesome place that's a lot of fun. Took me back to my childhood! It was a bit unclear what parking spaces belonged to them and what belong to their neighbors.

I played skee ball and basketball. I played the Simpsons. I got further on the game playing as Bart instead of Marg. It was just ok. The bar is affordable. The staff is so friendly. I don't drink so I got bored easily. I based the rating off of there wasn't alot of fun games to play

Always a banger spot to stop in for some drinks and games. Always great deals, and the games are CHEAP! Don't sleep on the pizza either!

Fun atmosphere. But after dark it gets crazy busy. Love the rooftop patio and bar. Could spend a lot of time here. I loved so many of the classic arcade games they had available. Parking is a bit interesting to sort out. Love the proximity to power and light. Will be back.

The fact that y'all don't have busch heavy or wild turkey American honey is absolutely wild. Waitress even said yall had all sorts of everything. False... 30 dollars for a pizza is absolutely maddening. Get your food before you go. Their pizza isn't worth 6$ a price should be 3.50 like the pizza should be 20$ for how bland it was... not to mention, I had 5 different machines. Just take my tokens... I'm not sure if I'll return.

Up-Down is such a fun bar! They have great specials each day, but Sundays are easily the best - a 6-pack of beer and a pound of tokens (in a fanny pack!) for $25. Do yourself a favor, and get a piece of mac & cheese pizza from their kitchen. So tasty!

Tried to go there Saturday night to watch the KU basketball game but it was way too crowded and loud.. plus I'm too old of a fart for that crowd. Looks fun for the young people though.

This place has the worst service, prices, and food I've ever encountered. It may have once been a good place but the current staff is terrible.

Za always saves the night. Mac n cheese pizza is the way to go :) we also had the cheese, meat lover, and pepperoni because everything else was sold out. Friendly service and always enjoy the upbeat vibes :)

Hands down the BEST patio in KC and the slushies are a must try. Such a fun bar and the staff is amazing!

Games ok. Drinks are shockingly expensive- think $9 for a can of Stella. Bartenders pretty rude if you're not in the mood to drink hipster beer. I have no interest in going back.

It's really fun and full of nostalgia for those who remember arcades. There is never much of a wait at the bar for drinks and the pizza?? is always tasty. Of course, it helps when you have been drinking a little already, but I'm sure it tastes just fine sober ??

What a great arcade. I love Up-Downs, KC might be my favorite that I have visited. The staff was super cool, the games were super fun, and the pizza was great.

Up-Down is a lot of fun. There is always SO many people and it's always so loud. Drinks were reasonable/average. Coin prices were about what you expect. Kansas City would do well with another ?barcade?.

Such a neat place! Went on a Wednesday night and it wasnt too busy. Large array of games and chill attentive staff. Price for the games was great too!

Amazing venue saw it while driving on the bird scooters stopped by and had the best time! Drinks were reasonable, games were cheap and staff were really good!

Super fun place! I've been here for birthdays, dates, and first Friday's. There are tons of games so even when it's busy there is always something to do. People are generally very good about letting others take turns. Drinks are really well priced and well made! Oh and the Mac and cheese pizza is a must, absolutely delicious.

What a cool throwback playing these pinball, arcade games and skeeball. Fantastic selection of beers and everything was affordable and such a cool atmosphere.

Always a fun night out when going to updown! Great, friendly bartenders, the drinks are moderately priced, and you can't beat 10? token night!

This place is still one of my favorite bars to go to. They have pizza for $5 to start, and it's fresh and delicious! Fantastic people who are able to work with ya on what drink you might want for pretty cheap prices. Arcade games are clean and working. (Most of the time) My only complaint isn't even terribly valid, but I definitely wish they had more space. They are very popular and tend to gets crowded later into the the night so it does making getting around a bit difficult and is super loud. If you w

Bar and arcade with lots of old school games. 21 and older. Games are a quarter. On Thursday they are 10 cents. They have specials for each night

Videogames and being social finally come together. You won't touch grass here in the city, but you can still have a good time. I'd give it a solid 9.5/10

Door guy was nice and service was good. It was busy but still got beer fast. They have skee ball and Mario Kart on the big screen which is fun and the have tons of old school 80s and 90s arcade games. Beers are average price and they do have quite a bit of beers on tap. If you're into games and beers, I'd recommend it.

Super fun! The arcade games are only 25? a piece. The food is good! They just have pizza I believe, but I have been one time. The drinks were about 6.50$ a piece. Between my husband and I, we had six drinks, totaling 40$ and some change. The only thing that I did not like was the flag hanging outside the building. They push an agenda and probably would get more service if they didn't promote it. Unfortunately, they fund these groups. I probably will go back at some point just because of how affordable and e

Great atmosphere for enjoying the company of others over a few drinks or some challenging to a vast array of arcade!! Pizza available to tie you over between full meals is above what you might expect. The energy of this place was uplifting! Highly recommend for a first date, entertaining out of town family, or even a casual place to conduct business.

One of my favorite places in KC! Lots of games, lots of beer and even though it can be crazy busy at night it has still provided me several hours of entertainment. (Also the pizza is fantastic!)

Nice beer selection and wide range of classic video games and a few pinball machines. Also have skee ball. Their outside patio get a lot of use when the weather is good. Here's a few pics of some of my favorite harder-to-find 80s video games:

I really enjoy Up-Down. The beer choices are varied and periodically change. The best though is the collection of pinball machines that you can play for a single token per game. My favorite tables are Stern Deadpool because it is so funny and easy to play and Stern KISS. "You Wanted the Best! You Got the Best! The Hottest Band in the World!" and an equally great machine.

Good place to have fun with friends! My favorite is Pinball and 5P Pac-Man. 4 stars just because some of the machines didn't work right or at all. They have decent pizza if you are hungry and pretty good choice of drinks. And I'm waiting for the weather to warm up a little bit so we can play that Huge Jenga!

Great location, always a fun time. The staff is knowledgeable, and the pizza serving sizes are affordable and large

Been a few times and honestly if there is one actual complaint, nearly all the machines in the location have some level of "man this needs fixed" if you are there for the games and booze is secondary. I realize restoring CRT screens is a big ask, but replacing sticks and buttons should be something they have anyone that's handy with a screwdriver do in off hours.

The most fun I've ever had at a bar. Only paid $31 for 2 beers and 2 cocktails which for me is a fantastic deal. It was busy but we still found some games to play. I was impressed how EVERY game was working! I can't wait to come back.

Really fun place to go! A ton of beers on tap, different themed cocktails and a lot of great arcade games!! Skee ball, basketball, pinball and a lot of older arcade games. Super enjoyable! They do serve decent pizza as well. The one call out is that a few of the games weren't functioning properly and didn't have out of order signs on them. Just a few, so didn't diminish my experience.

Hank made our experience so great I brought my friends from out of town and he made our night great by starting us out with high energy and great drinks

Old school meets millennials dream. Adult beverages and game dating back decades. No children!! Bartenders are always fantastic and incredibly friendly. The spread is nice too. Its always busy but that's the goal, right!?

Super fun! Celebrated our anniversary. Pizza was good, games were fun

Great spot for games and beers.they had old school wrestling and comedies on the monitors. The bartender justin was so nice.he welcomed us with open arms.

One of my favorite bars in Kansas City! The beer selection and liquor choices are great. Not to mention the huge amount of games there. Without a doubt my favorite patio downtown. Cannot wait to go asap.

I love coming here to hang out with friends on the patio, play games, try new beers and drinks at the bar, and eat delicious pizza. It's always a great time at Up-Down right in the heart of the Crossroads Art District of KC. I love the deal they have every Sunday!

Had a few drinks and spent a few dollars on games. Lots of different drinks on tap plus liquors and canned options. It was a fun way to pass time. There are specials on most days, an upstairs with fun games, and an outside patio! Happy gaming!

Up-down has always been a great casual or funky date night. Ski ball is the best and they have classics like Pac man, asteroids, Tetris and most every other video game I could think of. Tuesday's are 10 cent tokens so great value!!!

I genuinely love this place!! The people are amazing, the atmosphere is amazing, the food is amazing, the games are amazing, everything at Up-Down KC is just amazing!! It's literally the only place I'll go when it comes to bars/clubs, and I don't even drink alcohol. The ONLY thing this wonderful establishment is missing are Chess tables, and Chess tournaments!! I can't begin to tell you how much I, and so many others love the game of Chess. One thing that I've noticed over the years is the growth of Ches

Fun and local spot during the week or weekends! Great selections of beers & always some delicious pizza in the back. Amazing patio area! Check out the daily specials to see what they have going on. Always worth a stop on a Friday afternoon for some PBR and coins to play some games!

Fun arcade bar with long and interesting tap line-up. Gourmet pizza-by-the-slice made in-house. Veritable complete classic arcade game list with mix of classic and modern pinball machines in addition free-to-play giant jengas, giant connect-4's, and n64 with a selection of games. Great lower and upper patios, place is packed in good weather. Update 3.16.2025: - pizza has changed a bit, such that there's now a daily special! Today's was sausage and onion. I also finally got my fanny pack full of coins, and

It was busy, there were lots of people, our group of five got right in, went to the patio found seating. We walk up ordered pizza, which was fresh, hot and fast. Our drinks arrived at the table as we did and the servers were appreciably attentive. Convenient short walk to the street car route.

I just want to say thank you to this staff! While playing the pop-shot game I lost my grandmothers ring. It fell off my hand while shooting. I gave my information to the staff in hopes they would find it at close. One of their staff stopped people from playing the game and got INTO THE MACHINE and opened it up to look and find my heirloomed ring in the middle of a busy Friday night. I cannot express how grateful I am for the staff for understanding the importance of that ring and for helping me find it.

Well, I really enjoyed this place. The old video games are so cool. I liked this place, cause I can have a few beers and play old as dirt video games. They have a place to sit outside, plus they have some food there. We had pizza.

Fun arcade games, good pizza by the slice and a rooftop patio overlooking the city. I came back here during a visit after moving out of state and it felt like a piece of home being there again. It's lively, upbeat and great place to get together with friends!

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s it like visiting an arcade today?

It’s a mix of nostalgia and high-energy fun! Many arcades blend retro classics like Pac-Man and pinball with modern VR games, racing simulators, and rhythm challenges — often with music, lights, and a social vibe.

Is it better to go alone or with friends?

Both can be great! Solo visits let you focus on your favorite games, while going with friends adds competition, teamwork, and laughs. Many people plan arcade meetups as a casual hangout or even date spot.

What should I bring to an arcade?

Usually just yourself and a way to pay (some arcades still use coins, others use cards or apps). If you're competitive, bring your A-game. If you're social, bring friends or meet new ones over multiplayer games.

What’s the best time to visit an arcade?

Weekdays or early afternoons are usually less crowded — perfect for focused play. Evenings and weekends bring the buzz, especially at barcades or venues with DJs, tournaments, or themed nights.

Can I meet new people at arcades?

Absolutely! Arcades attract a mix of casual players and serious gamers. Whether you're jumping into a four-player co-op or chatting between rounds, it's a fun, low-pressure way to connect over shared interests.

Are arcades still just for kids?

Not at all. While many arcades are family-friendly, there are also adult-oriented ones with full bars, 18+ nights, or vintage nostalgia themes. Arcades today cater to everyone — from first-timers to lifelong gamers.

Are there events or tournaments I can join?

Yes! Many arcades host regular competitions, retro nights, cosplay parties, and more. Whether you're into high scores or just want to watch and vibe, events add an extra layer to the experience.

What if I’m not great at arcade games?

No worries — arcades are about having fun, not being perfect. Try a variety of games, ask others for tips, and remember: the vibe is more “let’s play” than “let’s win.”

Are pinball tables still good in this modern age?

Yes, pinball tables in arcades remain a blast. Their hands-on, skill-driven gameplay delivers a thrill digital games can’t match, blending nostalgia with modern flair. Newer tables from Stern and Jersey Jack feature LCD screens and themes like Avengers or Stranger Things, keeping things exciting. Arcades are seeing a pinball resurgence with vibrant scenes and tournaments like IFPA events drawing crowds. Though less common than video games, pinball’s tactile charm and community vibe make it a standout arcade experience in 2025.

Are retro games in arcades still good in this modern age?

Absolutely, retro games in arcades remain a thrilling draw in 2025! Classics like Pac-Man, Space Invaders, and Street Fighter II offer simple yet addictive gameplay, blending nostalgia with timeless challenge. Modern arcade cabinets often feature crisp displays and restored controls, enhancing the experience. These games thrive on quick reflexes and strategy, with vibrant pixel art and iconic soundtracks that spark joy. Arcades host tournaments and leaderboards, fostering a lively community. While modern games dominate, retro titles provide a unique, accessible thrill that keeps arcades buzzing.
