Time Out Arcade in Ames offers an impressive selection of pinball machines and classic arcade games including a dedicated purpose built star wars room. Staff seemed attentive and happy. The retro decor immerses you in 80s and 90s nostalgia. Their karaoke nights are lively and well-attended. With affordable drinks and a welcoming atmosphere, it's a fantastic spot for both gamers and music enthusiasts. Don't miss if you are in town.

We had a great team outing at Time Out today. Who doesn't love a little friendly competition over skee ball, mario kart 64, dance dance revolution, or high score on Galaga!?! Lance & Chris are awesome hosts!

Can definitely tell you it's really nice here. There's fun, themed drinks. There's a counter where it looks like you can buy some retro figures, games, and a whole N64! (Correct me if I'm making assumptions!) Karaoke was a blast to listen to, and it's awesome having a bunch of retro games combined with some "modern" ones. As a heads up, some folks might find it overstimulating on nights like karaoke night, BUT in my opinion it's a good kind of overstimulating, and I won't dock points for a good atmosphere.

I'm not sure why I never stopped here. I love the place! The retro arcade and much more. The food was delicious. They do have a grumpy chef but kill it with the food. Great atmosphere, i can also bring my kids and enjoy a game night. Until 7pm of course ??

This is my favorite bar in Ames. The bars I've been to in campus town are incredibly loud to the point where you can barely have a conversation and they only play songs that were popular 5-8 years ago. At TimeOut there is so much to do!! the games are affordable and the karaoke is so much fun. The Karaoke competitions feel like a live show with entertaining judges. They also play a variety of music old and new along with music videos to watch while you sip your drinks If you are feeling overstimulated the

The front side of the bar has darts and karaoke, lots of seating and a huge bar. The beer selection and drinks are great. They also do cool events like music bingo and Bob Ross painting night. The back is an 80's/90's arcade with retro video games, skee ball, pool table, pop a shot and modern pinball machines. They have app style food that fixed fresh when it's ordered and tasty. There are tv's everywhere that are showing the Gen X videos that correspond to the music you're hearing, or they have a classi

I just went here for the first time, the atmosphere was very chill but extremely fun at the same time. They have plenty of arcade games to play (most of them cost 50 cents per play), and the video game themed drinks are so cool. The Bill and Ted wall is also very cool, I wish I had one of my own I'm definitely going to be coming back regularly.

Was alot of fun. Had a great time plating games and few drinks

I do not usually like bars. I had a very fun time here with friends. Coincidentally, it was karaoke night. Even better. They have a great selection of games that are well maintained. The staff are all lovely people, especially whoever?s mom works here. Me, and my quarters, will be back. (Suggestions for games, if more are added in the future: Another air hockey table, Paperboy, and Rhythm Heaven) edit: I forgot to add, it was pretty loud, but I expected that since it's an arcade bar with karaoke on a Frid

Fun bar with vintage arcade and pinball, along with more modern games. They all take quarters, and the bar area hosts various specialty nights, such as trivia night and karaoke. Reminded me of the 80s arcade Dark Star located in campus town.

We have had several birthday parties here. They are super flexible, it's first come first serve on space/ tables. We brought our own food in, the kitchen doesn't open until 7(?). They are so nice to work with, hospitable, and the games are really affordable compared to some of the other arcades in the area. Although we didn't partake, they have a big, beautiful bar! It's also great for date nights. Pool, air hockey, ski ball. 5 STARS!

Ames needed this place years ago. The service is always top notch. The LOCAL Family that owns it is delightful and kind. The game selection is amazing and the both alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks selections are diverse. It's the kinda place kids and adults could enjoy. But you'd probably have a better time here with the kids at home. Very cozy, intimate and an Ames staple. Love this place.

Good place go to love doing games thwrw with friends sometimes or going alone

Very fun for a night out if you like arcade, you'll have fun

So many fun arcade games and they are reasonably priced per game! This is a great place to come to spend a few hours and hangout. They have a lot of drinks, including NA options for a good price.

We went here with our son in law and daughter and our grandkids for our granddaughters birthday. The kids enjoyed themselves and I was able to visit with my daughter while they were nipping themselves.

Had a gift card and used it to have a blast with my friends! We had a couple rounds of Mario kart 64, some Dance Dance Revolution, even pac-man battle. The pinball machines were fun, too. I can't wait to come back.

Making plans with a friend I mentioned that I wished Ames had something similar to UpDown (on Locust in the DM East Village). As it turns out, Time Out was that and more. Tucked away in a clean modern building is a full bar, great common area with tall tables and booths and a dedicated karaoke corner. So, arcade games? Everywhere. Classics circle the bar section. Mid 80's Nintendo staples: Excitebike, SMB, R-Type, Donkey Kong. Assorted classics like TMNT, X-Men and Tron round out the front room. Tha

I love going out for karaoke. Staff is nice and friendly. Food always hits the spot. Wide variety of arcade games.

A great selection of video games. Was good value and great ambience. We didn't eat there but maybe next time.

Pretty fun. Wasn't entirely impressed with the bartenders drink mixing knowledge, but they were friendly. It was pretty crowded but we still enjoyed our time.

Service was very slow. Two of the drinks we got were Meh. Fuzzy Navel and Slimer. Butterbeer was very good. Wish I could?ve had more but the service was so slow it was a chore. There was a drag show event going on. Which just made everything worse. As the ?girls? dance in front of the ordering counter causing even more congestion. Their ?changing room? also had it to where several more games were closed off. Overall poor experience. The majority of there arcade is pinball machines. They do have other arcad

So much FUN! I really liked the game selections. The bar itself had a very cool vibe and loved the atmosphere. I was very pleasantly surprised when it was karaoke! The DJs were awesome fantastic singers/ back up. Everyone was having fun and it was very chill and happy!

My BF n I were only ones there. Bartender and owner were very accommodating and answered questions also turned all the games back on for us since we had never been. Definitely gunna make it out for one of their drag hosted karaoke nights!! Would love to see this place I'm action, packed full of people laughing and enjoying themselves! ??

Went here for my son's 19th birthday. Our family are a bunch of nerds so coming here was a blast! I have video of my wife playing the Star Wars projector game and my son beat me in Mario Kart on the Nintendo 64 they have. It was a lot of fun and will definitely be going back for our next visit.

Fun arcade bar with tons of old games and delicious drinks

Quirky, but interesting bar with a lot going on. Good time.

Had a great time with my friends here! Will definitely come back

1 star for food because I didnt eat anything so I don't know what they have or if its any good. 1 star for service because we didn't ask for, or receive any service while there. This is a good place to go if you don't want to be surrounded by screaming kids but instead possibly be surrounded by drunk adults, luckily when i went it wasn't drunk o' clock yet. They have a decent selection of the good old games, in my opinion they need a lot more ticket-winning games. Their old school selection of stuff to buy

I had a lot of fun at this place. And it's cheap! Most of the arcade games are only a quarter to play and there's probably 100 of them. It also has many pinball machines, ski ball, and a separate room with an air hockey table. And all of those are only 50 cents! There's also two other 90s themed rooms with a couch, TV, and old Nintendo games that you can rent out for $5/hr. Additionally, they have a bigger room for $25/hr. It has a big projection screen for Guitar Hero 3 and I believe some other systems/ga

We held a 30th birthday party here this past weekend and the experience was great from beginning to end. We did it on Sunday when there was no liquor served so that it was kid friendly. The kids had a wonderful time and so did the adults the owner was very accommodating in helping us any way she could with the details of our party. This is definitely now one of my spots to go to whenever I get out for a night on the town.

Surprisingly large beer selection and full bar. All the games are just a quarter. Great way to spend some time!

Walk in the door and there were kids doing karaoke a bar is not a place for kids even if it's an arcade to so I left not a place I want to return to.

We visited today during TO's kid friendly hours (Sundays 12-5) in hopes we would have uninterrupted Area 51 time and our kiddo could enjoy some games at his own pace. We were very impressed; CLEAN, reasonably priced, great selection of classic and newer games and the staff/owners were very friendly. They do not serve alcohol during kid friendly hours, but from what I could see behind the bar, it would make for an awesome night out as well. We would definitely recommend for kiddos (Sunday only) and adults -

Staff was really friendly drinks were not to expensive and made well alot of fun older arcade games. Made you feel welcomed from when you entered and untill you left super fun place to spend a night off would definitely recommend to friends.

Sunday Family day was awesome. We taught the kids pool, Foosball and air hockey. Played family pac man, competed in hoops and tried all the pin ball. An absolute blast. She said they also do family karaoke sometimes, we can't wait to go back.

Love this place! It feels like you're drinking in your friend's basement and he's got a sweet set up ??

Great theme bar, family owned. Has a great game room with a classic arcade feel. The only thing this bar lacks is good food options, so eat before you get here.

The most fun bar in Ames. Visit here at least monthly. Lots of game options. Lots of unique and delicious drink options. Service is quick and friendly. Sing some karaoke to have an even better time. Basically you can't go wrong visiting Time Out.

I was in from out of state and decided to go out for the night with my sister. She chose this place because she said she'd heard it was a fun place. I was absolutely not impressed. The drinks were super small and overpriced, the bartender (the only male there) is not educated in his drinks, the karaoke guy was picking from people he knew to sing more than others and his system sounded awful (my husband is a DJ). The music was so loud and you couldn't hear the person singing. I'll definitely look for a new p

This place is literally my childhood and the best parts of adulting Under One Roof! Amazing retro games, a very unique and exciting atmosphere, karaoke, and an awesome bar! By far one of the best places to take your kids for a burger and entertainment or your friends and significant other for an awesome night out in all of central Iowa! Two locations make it even more convenient! Where else can you buy an original Nintendo Entertainment System, play Super Mario Brothers on an arcade machine, and then cel

We mainly go for pinball. Love the Doctor Who, Guardians of the Galaxy, and South Park games. Princess Daisy is a fantastic cocktail too, highly recommend trying it if you like chocolate. They have a variety of other games too, and the staff is always so nice. It's always a fun time going here. Update 6/5/22: Unfortunately I didn't see Guardians there today. But I didn't have any issues with the pinball games I did play. All the ones I tried were working well (Deadpool, Ghostbusters, South Park, BayWatch,

Every time I visit Time Out, I come away with a smile on my face! Playing all the old and new arcade games is fun for the whole family and a great getaway without having to leave town. I fully recommend Time Out for your next after work get together, Friday night out with friends, or family friendly event on a Sunday afternoon!

Very clean and very cool. All the classic arcade games I remember and some I don't.

This place is fine. There are some cool games, and people seemed to be having a good time, but it was very loud (no problem with a bar being loud, just noting that it's not one you'd go to to sit and chat). I'd go back.

One of the bartenders, a blond girl, was extremely RUDE and also overcharged me. I then asked the owner about the price and they fixed it. Still, it was absolutely unpleasant experience. It felt like a RACE based discrimination. She was being nice to white folks next to me like a second ago. And then her face and voice completely changed while taking my order and she yelled right into my face a couple of times.

Play your favorite arcade games, pool, air hockey, even Mario Cart 64 on the comfy couch. Join karaoke on the weekends and family day on Sunday! Owner Chris is super sweet!! Oh and don't forget the TARDIS!!

This place is pretty neat. They have so many arcade games, and decent drinks. Don't miss the back room! They also have n64 rooms to rent, which makes for a lot of fun if you have a larger group.

Good game and beer selection. I got to hate on every game not being a quarter. They do have the best game ever Beer Time

Time out is an arcade bar type place. With many pinball machines and arcade cabinets this game is very fun they had 10 or so pinball machines and around 20 cabinets. Super fun they had cabinets like rally-x,dr mario, and dig dug. All their machines are in very good condition. I highly reccomend this place to hang out for a bit.

Very good place to play some video games and have some drinks.

Time Out has a good selection of machines for a Barcade. Staying between 25 and 50 cents, it has thing like Gauntlet, Bad Dudes, Area 51, and other classics. It also has a number of pinball machines, all of which seem to work rather well, including Addams Family, Game of Thrones, and Indiana Jones. Where Time Out has the most room for improvement is at the bar. They have a variety of hard liquor, nothing too outstanding, but covering the essentials. For beer, they have a lot of domestics, such as Bud Light,

I had a great time playing the arcade games and enjoying some chilled drinks! I recommend to any teen looking for a great time with friends with a drinking place for parents. Would come back! ??

It's a cool arcade bar, drinks are based on characters (honestly a little overpriced) but really good service and overall time. Would suggest for a great time out.

An awesome arcade bar! Tons of games, the space is clean and well designed, the staff are chill and competent, and as an added bonus there's plenty of parking. Would definitely recommend.

This is by far our favourite spot in Ames. The owner is absolutely fantastic and bends over backwards to make you feel right at home. Drinks are very affordable and games are classic and well maintained.

Tight quarters with karaoke going on. Video games need some tlc, many need new cherry switches installed or contacts cleaned. Pinballs are better maintained and decent selection. Drinks are average priced.

Nice little vintage game bar. Ski ball! And the games take quarters instead of tokens which I like. And it seems they do karaoke on weekends, as well. Good times.

Only the best bar I've been to in all my life!! 80s theme with legit quarter arcade, and LGBTQ friendly. 10/10 would recommend, and I will go again

Best place in town. Great games, great nerdy drinks. If I had to give one critique, the air hockey table needs some work.

Super fun spot, Erin my bartender was super cool, the drinks were down right cheep and the games were dope, I'll definitely go back soon... its a good time waiting to happen..

Awesome place! Most games are less than a dollar to play. Fun place to hang out by yourself or with a group of friends and get some drinks.

Great place to spend time with full retro arcade theming, even whole families (with accompanying adults) before 9pm! Love karaoke nights Fridays and most Saturdays!

Great place clean and well ran

This is a great place for a date night with my husband. Great music, friendly staff, owner is always available if needed and having the old school arcade is fantastic.

Great for Birthday partys and fun for the whole family. We always have a great time. Good prices and great games. Love the old school vibe.

This was so fun. It can get a bit pricey, but it's a really nice change from a regular bar. The staff is very friendly, and the atmosphere is very chill.

Fun place. Kinda something new so bring as many people as you want. No cover. Just order any of their great beers and get you quarters to play.

Best bar ever. Friendly atmosphere. Owners are the best. Shout out to Maddie and everyone else

Nice play to share with friends. It was a good time playing in it's game zone!!

They have a lot of arcade games of a variety of types. I go there to occasionally go there to play Time Crisis 5.

Fun, groups of all ages

We had so much fun! Great bar selection, wide assortment of games, and good atmosphere.

Our whole family had a great time there today and thankful that we can bring young kids in for a few hours. Thank you for the fun family time!

Coins and memories. Walking through this place with anyone from the arcade era is like walking through a interactive geek museum. I wish this place much prosperity, even if it comes to them one quarter at a time.

Good tap selection if you're a fan of IPAs. Really slow service, though, took 5 minutes to get a beer even though the bartenders didn't look busy.

Went at night. Adult fun. There was live entertainment, and we played the arcade. Bar was serving good drinks.

Lots of fun and brings back so many memories from playing arcade games as a kid. Great customer service and drinks.

I do wish they had more game selections, but the karaoke is fun, and their drinks are good.

Great atmosphere, bartenders be on the move to serve drinks to everyone waiting; which with such a big bar is amazing. Overall, 10 out of 10 would recommend ????

Awesome atmosphere with tons of classic arcade games! Reasonable drink prices and lots of space to socialize and game.

Love watching everyone do karaoke since I'm a whimp! Nice strong drinks!! Enough games to keep you occupied all night

Great place with an amazing vibe. They have karaoke nights and people is very friendly and supportive for novice singers.

Such a cool place to go and hang out! Lots of original arcade games and they're all 50 cents or below

Loads of fun! A great selection of arcade games, great drinks, and the staff is very friendly

Love the concept! Games and 80s music plus nice drink specials. Fun location!

Love this place it's amazing! So many fun games to play and tasty drinks!

Service was fast and the atmosphere is great!! Any problems I had were promptly addressed and even went above and beyond my expectations . Also, the games are cheap!!

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s it like visiting an arcade today?

It’s a mix of nostalgia and high-energy fun! Many arcades blend retro classics like Pac-Man and pinball with modern VR games, racing simulators, and rhythm challenges — often with music, lights, and a social vibe.

Is it better to go alone or with friends?

Both can be great! Solo visits let you focus on your favorite games, while going with friends adds competition, teamwork, and laughs. Many people plan arcade meetups as a casual hangout or even date spot.

What should I bring to an arcade?

Usually just yourself and a way to pay (some arcades still use coins, others use cards or apps). If you're competitive, bring your A-game. If you're social, bring friends or meet new ones over multiplayer games.

What’s the best time to visit an arcade?

Weekdays or early afternoons are usually less crowded — perfect for focused play. Evenings and weekends bring the buzz, especially at barcades or venues with DJs, tournaments, or themed nights.

Can I meet new people at arcades?

Absolutely! Arcades attract a mix of casual players and serious gamers. Whether you're jumping into a four-player co-op or chatting between rounds, it's a fun, low-pressure way to connect over shared interests.

Are arcades still just for kids?

Not at all. While many arcades are family-friendly, there are also adult-oriented ones with full bars, 18+ nights, or vintage nostalgia themes. Arcades today cater to everyone — from first-timers to lifelong gamers.

Are there events or tournaments I can join?

Yes! Many arcades host regular competitions, retro nights, cosplay parties, and more. Whether you're into high scores or just want to watch and vibe, events add an extra layer to the experience.

What if I’m not great at arcade games?

No worries — arcades are about having fun, not being perfect. Try a variety of games, ask others for tips, and remember: the vibe is more “let’s play” than “let’s win.”
