Went over the weekend as it was super hot out and the drink flight slushees hit the spot! A bit sugary but def recommend for the sweet tooth fans. The Strawberry Banana was really yummy! The only complaint was sat a drink down to play a game and when went back to get it a server had taken it away. Other than that a very fun time!
This fun arcade has about all the games you can handle for a couple hours. Plenty of drink options- but NO, they don't serve unsweet tea. It's minus half star for me for that lol. But everyone else got all they could handle, and the champion of the night was not the guy who said he would win every game all night long! At the end though, we all had fun and won tickets. It's about a quarter the size of the popular game arcade bar you might know of, but this place isn't for kids, so you don't need all the spac
Super clean. Helpful staff with the games and plenty of games too. The Slushies are super yummy but 5 dollars is a bit high. Most games are a dollar. They have pizza and some other foods as well.
I am so glad we found this place. We just walked by on our way somewhere else and ended up spending over two hours here and loved it! The place is very clean, unlike a similar arcade bar downtown. Staff were very nice. There were a lot of different games, all worked great and a nice mix of modern and retro games. Lots of pinball, ski ball, a huge Pac man game, several shooting games, Donkey Kong, Mario Bros, Asteroids, Tron, a Pac Man themed air hockey, Cruising USA, the list goes on. Prices for the game
So much fun! You can play for tickets or just for fun. Alcoholic slushies are tasty, I highly recommend the mango flavor! Cocktails are reasonable, and with $50 of play, you get an extra $10; good for 2 ppl to play for 2 hours.
Fun place with lots of arcade games and a bar. Friendly atmosphere.
Cool arcade with pinball machines where we played in an IFPA pinball tournament. Easy parking and you use game cards. Food not great and overpriced.
Completely enjoyed my experience here today with my fourteen year old son. Typical bar food, but done well. We ordered a pizza and chicken wings. It came out hot and fresh and tasted very good. Staff was very friendly and genuinely happy to serve and make sure we where having a good time. It was a little chilly in the building so if you are going durring the day when there are not a lot if people I would suggest a hoodie or something if you tend to get cold like I do. The game selection was good and we had
This is a nice place to play arcade games, drink alcohol, and laugh and scream with friends. I was skeptical at first, but you can actually play games and win tickets, and then turn in your tickets for a prize! It is all on a special card and automated by an easy-to-use machine. For example, win a game of Soviet Union's Connect Four basketball and you will win 30 tickets. Some drinks are very fun to drink because they are in the form of a syringe, which you must inject into your or a friend's mouth. I feel
This place is great. The machines are all clean and look well maintained. There were a couple that were down, but the selection was so good that it didn't bother me at all. I had a lot of fun playing pinball here. The staff was kind as well. I will definitely come back in the future.
Awesome arcade bar! Lots of pinball machines a lot of which you can even buy but be prepared to fork out a lot of cash for one though! Some big multiplayer games also!
Another fun place to take the kids to burn some time. You just have to be there before 6 pm for anyone younger than 21 years old. My kids had a blast, from Mario Kart, 4 player pac man to skee ball and pinball. Not a huge selection of tap beers but good enough to drink and play some games.
A lot of fun games and the drinks were super yummy! A bit pricey, but it was worth it. A bit cold in there, so bring a jacket!
Fun place for a birthday date with my man. Great drinks, too pricey on portobello fries so eat elsewhere.
Such a fun place to hang out. Great selection of both pinball and arcade games. Wide drink selection and fair prices on drinks. I personally LOVED the tigers blood. We spent about 5 hours there on $30 worth of play and had a blast. Perfect location for hanging out with friends in a low-key, but also fun setting.
The bartender was amazing and so nice! He gave great recommendations on my drinks I ordered and definitely made sure I got the best bang for my buck. Me and my boyfriend had a blast playing games and just having a good time being able to relax and get out for a couple hours. I recommend going on a Sunday because we noticed alot of the games were free to play and they had happy hour specials. Will definitely be going back and may take my kids next as minors can come til 7:30pm!
Amazing little arcade; Super small, but their drinks are great [Try The Shark Bite!!]. Great for a few hours of daytime family fun with the kids or nighttime drunken adventures with your friends; I've done both and had a blast every time. The venue has great parking and is very clean, the staff has always been super pleasant, and the games have great variety for such a small place.
If you need a fun place to get together with your work group and don't want to break the bank doing it, I highly recommend The Operating Room in West Des Moines. Vanessa was great in helping organize our gathering and very responsive to emails and suggestions for our team. Josh was a fantastic bartender and took great care of us! We played some games and had a great time just getting away from the office for a few hours. The mini donuts were the bomb!
The games were fun and the establishment was clean. The decorations and lighting were very cool! The kitchen closed right after we got there so I'm unsure about food. The bartenders in the main game room were helpful when asked a question but did not offer help when we first walked in looking confused and trying to figure out how to buy credits even though they watched us the whole time. The only actual issue was that you have no idea how many credits each game will cost you. I paid $20 and got over 400 cre
The operating room is my favorite place to go when I want to feel like a kid again (with some wine or beer in hand of course.) I really love how unique this place is when it comes to the design, there's great theming inside like art of human anatomy on the walls. There's a great variety of games as well.
Had a fun time here on a weeknight. I imagine if this place gets busy it might suffer a bit due to its small size. The no tokens idea is clean and it keeps it lightweight by charging and recharging your plastic card. Personally had the most fun playing the mini disc air hockey and the carnival throw. It's definitely a fun place to throw in the rotation of your normal routine.
First off, I never take the time to review things but I felt compelled to after several awesome experiences here. My wife and I absolutely love, The Operating Room. I've been to many pinball/arcade establishments that serve alcohol in the past... but this place is exceptional! You can tell that the owner is a true lover of the arcade experience. The space itself is absolutely immaculate! It is intimate but not undersized by any means. I'll admit that I didn't quite understand the name until I started glanc
This is 100% the best place for modern pinball in Des Moines! Their pinball machines are all well-maintained and are rotated semi-frequently as new ones come out. Most are priced at 50 cents, with some newer/flashier ones at roughly a dollar. It's a super clean place, it doesn't feel greasy like arcades sometimes do. If you love pinball, you gotta come here!
Had a surprise get together for my son?s 21st birthday and it was awesome! Staff, service food and drinks were excellent and of course the games were too. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a place to host a party or just for an evening of fun.
I love the staff and the atmosphere. I've had two corporate events here and they were both wonderful. You can rent the space in the early afternoon or co-mingle with the public after 3pm. They will either 1) have food available through their space 2) have a food truck or 3) have it catered through Taste of New York. It's an easy team building event to plan. I also come here on my own time to enjoy the slushies and beer while playing their pinball or co-op games. The artwork on the walls is fun and ima
Good place to get beer and play games. Selection is really meant for group play so if you go bring some friends. Gets a bit crowded at night but still an enjoyable time. Drinks are pricey but still worth the price. They have shots at the bar that are in actual syringes. Recommend them all except the for the clear green one...dont know whats in it but dont taste good.
Great selection of games. Tons of Pinball machines (my favorite) and even for a Saturday night it didn't feel horribly cramped. The old school arcade machines feeling practically brand new was absolutely incredible also compared to other "Barcades" I've visited. The convenience of using a mobile app on nearly every machine in addition to quarters is a significant quality of life lacking at other ones I've visited. If I had one gripe, it's the overall floor area could be double the size to give a more open f
Arcade has a fair selection of games with good pricing for play (spent 20 bucks and was there for three hours or so). Bar section looked fairly stocked and the selection of alcoholic slushes (and one non alcoholic, tigers blood) was impressive. The reason for four stars, the food was alright, daughter had a burger and fries which she rates burger as decent, fries great, I had the jalapeno popper grilled cheese (it was alright, served with prepackaged smucker's sugar free jam). TL;DR: We'll definitely go ba
We held our son's 12th birthday here, and wow! Everything was ready to go when we got there, the staff was incredibly nice, constantly checking in, and prompt when we needed anything. Prices were fair, and food and drinks were delicious. We will absolutely be back!
We had heard about this place so stopped by for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. Bar food menu had some good choices- we shared a calzone and some wings-the wings were good sized and crispy and the calzone was just right! They have a dozen beers on tap with some good local craft beer choices. There are a couple different game rooms with a good variety of old school pinball and some newer games. Good for families or a night out with friends. We will definitely be back!
Just had my 10 year old sons birthday party there. It was amazing! Awesome staff, awesome games, awesome everything! They even noticed that I am an Arkansas Razorback fan and turned the game on! My son loved it, we loved it. Thanks for the awesome experience! We will be back time and time again. 5?s isn't enough ?s! CHECK THIS PLACE OUT!!!!! Thanks for reading.
We were here last Saturday and brought our friends from my husbands hometown. We had the absolute best time. The bartenders were fabulous, the syringe shots were soooo tasty and the games took me back to a simpler time, pretty nostalgic. We are definitely looking forward to going back.
I came here a couple of months ago with a group of friends and had a really good time. I got a cinnamon slushy drink which was pretty good but also pretty expensive for the amount of alcohol in it. They do have drink specials. There are some pretty cool arcade games here but it does get expensive as expected with newer arcade games. The Pac-Man air hockey game was my favorite.
This place in clean, the natural light is nice during the day, the people were friendly, and it's a fun place for a family with teenagers to go in the afternoons. There are lots of games you can play together but also plenty of games for some solo time. Oh an we loved the art on the walls.
The staff gave us a little extra time to spend our money, but wouldn't let us spend all of our money. They had some fun games, but the place was very loud and crowded. The place also wasn't pleasant smelling. It was an okay arcade but the manager kicked us out because we were to young. They also had their 21+ sign in the smallest font on the door. I would spend my money in a better arcade where you can spend all of it.
They had some fun games to play, but the prices where now clear. Spent $10 but all the games where marked by points. I think 25 points is 50? but I could be wrong. Anyway I went but to the bar to get a drink, but the guy behind the bar told me he couldn't serve me for some reason was hard to hear why though. I then went to play the Halo game with my friend. As we where playing that dude behind the bar decided it was a good time to clean the game as we where playing. I asked if he could wait till we was do
I had so much fun at the operating room! The drinks were all so good and the games were so much fun. They have old fashion Mario ghost hunters, Pacman, a huge space invaders game, basketball, Mario kart, skee ball, pin ball machines, a walking dead game, and a few more. I was able to try nearly every game with a $10 card. It's also nice that you don't need quarters, it is just a refillable card
Great place to hang out! Just had my sons birthday here. My son had a blast here and so did his friends. Make sure kids are out by 3 or so, the larger drinking crowd starts coming in around then.
It was a fun place. The only really bad experience I had was actually tonight. We still had drinks left inside and we were outside vaping and we told the girl we had drinks left inside and we were ready to head back inside to finish up. As my girlfriend was about to head back in the girl literally shut the door right at her face. Super rude. I don't know what her problem was. I hope they don't treat all their costumers like that.
I gave this place 4 stars based off of its competition. While it is nice to have an arcade bar in WDM, I think it's worth it to drive an extra 10-15 minutes to its competitor downtown. Pros: clean, modern, friendly staff, and I like the overall OR theme of the bar. They even purchased OR lights for over the top of the bar. They do have some more modern games, and quite a few 2 player driving/shooting games. Cons: overpriced drinks: they are known for their slushies drinks which are $8 for a 6.5 oz and $12
Its a fun game bar. Like a chic vibe. Pinball games seem to rotate semi regular. Drinks are not bad maybe a touch heavy pour. Let downs were drinks on the specials menu not available. No heads up no clear availability date so found something I wanted to try waited in line to be let down and have to order a standard cocktail. You have to go to bar to order food not really clear and menu was a pain to locate and download on webpage. Food was okay. Jst ordered fries. Its a pound of fries. I ordered garlic ao
Had an error with their machine reading reward cards and didn't give the bonus tickets it was supposed to provide. Told me they couldn't do anything and had to speak with a manager. Told me to come back another day, not worth my time to come back. My friends and I won't be back. Principal is the main point after spending $100+ dollars 2 nights in a row and several hundred in drinks and not covering their error
Games actually paid out tickets all right but the prizes were pretty worthless. I know arcade prizes aren't always spectacular but these were especially not worthwhile. Would really recommend them getting some prizes that are worth spending your money to win.
Great atmosphere! The specialty slushies are very good, but prepare to fork over some greenbacks. Almost all machines are operational and work well, with a few older machines having the expected wear and tear. Machines rotate at a good pace, not too fast nor slow. All in all a great barcade, and I would recommend.
We had a great time! The staff are very good at their jobs, very nice. The portobello fries at a must try, they are delicious! Their frozen drinks at delicious! We will be back!!
Fun bar with good service! They got a lot of good arcades.
Was in town for a wedding and we couldn't wait to try the frozen drinks and play games. My very real very valid New York State ID was denied because the scanner wasn't working. I fully understand the importance of IDing as a full time bartender of 10 years but train your staff appropriately.
Love the environment and the games. HATE how OVERPRICED their drinks and food are. Literally can go anywhere and get an alcoholic beverage that's more than 6.5oz for $4-6 rather than paying $8 for one drink and $13 for I believe an 8oz drink. I may be wrong but still overpriced in my opinion.
We had a work event at The Operating Room and it was the perfect venue! Lots of space, delicious food and drinks and so many fun games for our guests to play.T staff was so helpful, friendly and very accommodating to all our needs! I would definitely recommend.
Super friendly staff and a very clean establishment.... there's a good selection of pinball tables and a good amount of multiplayer games with a small splash of the classics like Donkey Kong and ice cold beer. Also a few racing games and they now have prizes ?? definitely should try the syringe shots super tasty
Great place! Amazing games and art work. You are paying for West Des Moines prices so it's the high end for price. Wish there was BOGs or discount days. Would be nice to come to more often but $1 bucks per game gets a little pricey out of my budget since I don't make that west Des Moines $$
Super fun!!! The service was good and the fellow gamers were all respectful of other people waiting. Awesome atmosphere and really fun place to spend the day!
So I've been looking for a barcade on my side of town for a while. I love Up-Down, but parking can be a nightmare, and my fiancee gets freaked out by downtown traffic, plus the crowding can be bad for her (she has a topical allergy to alcohol). So, I decided to check out The Operating Room on a slow night, to see what it's about I love the place. The aesthetic is both somewhat nostalgic and grown up, leaving a lot of room for different kinds of people. They've got 19 or so pinball machines, all in grea
Always have an great time at the OR!!! Drinks are fantastic and selection of games is huge. Excellent place to hang out with friends!
Fun place, but I wish they had some classic pinball tables and arcade machines.
I was in the area on business. Great bar with lots of games and tasty beverages. The bartenders and staff were awesome!!! Definitely recommended for a relaxing night with friends or some arcade action.
I went there with my two kids (3 and 5yo) and all three of us had a BLAST!!!! There are soooooo many options for games, plus tons of fun drink concoctions for adults. :) And fair prices!!!
My friend was denied drinks because he put his arms around me and my friend jokingly because it was my friends birthday. Even though one of the employees tried to explain that we were good, this uptight owner wouldn't understand. Glad i wasted money on a game card I'll never use because apparently this place can't listen to reason. Back to Updown!
Great place to take the kids for an hour. Ski ball, basketball, Mario kart are great for kids. I stay interested with the pinball games which are mostly brand new and in great shape.
Excellent. Bar and arcade room. Adult paradise! Not to mention that ticket cards and the prices of games are super reasonable. $20 lasted about an hour.
Why are you closed at 9:30 on a Monday with the staff just drinking inside? That's not a bar. I can't reply so I'm just editing my review. You were closed for "training" 4 hours before you were supposed to close. You don't open till 3 so I really don't understand why you couldn't do your sitting at the bar drinking training before or after business hours. We drove 20 minutes just for you to be closed so of course you get 1 star.
Fun place. Not to crowded for a Sunday Afternoon. Nice selection of games. Really liked that they had so many Pinball Machines, cause that's my jam!
This place is awesome! There are loads of fun games to play and tons of awesome slushees!!!!!!! Plus lots of beer! They also have an app you can download on your phone called PayRange so you don't have to mess around with coins, just pay with your phone, genious! The staff is awesome and super friendly.
Terrible staff, manager was awful, would not let minors spend there last $50 at quick prize machine (each attempt was 3 dollars and took less than 5 seconds) manager got mad and forcibly removed 6 members who were already by door. Smell is terrible of cat and piss. 0/10 would go again.
Cool place, most games are working. Drink prices are great. Victoria was super helpful and friendly
Setup is beautiful and well thought out. However drinks are expensive and personally would prefer more cabinets to pinball machines... However this is a cool unique place in Des Moines for drinks and games.
A nice addition to West Glen. I like the specialty drinks they have. Also they have a really great selection of pinball machines and some vintage video games mixed in with skee ball basketball beer pong and some newer games as well.
Super fun place! Cool games and even cooler drinks! You should definitely stop by and try their craft slushees! Perfect place for a date night
Fun place, cool games and atmosphere. Really expensive games though, I'd love to come more often as I live in the area but the prices are killer. Several of the games are $1, when competitors will charge 25 cents.
Always have the best time! Great bartenders, awesome drinks & so much fun.
Kids can play with their parents earlier in the day ?? place is clean, all games work, friendly staff, all good things here. We keep coming back... highly recommend for all!
It's a fun place to kill some time. It really isn't that big so I spent a majority of the time waiting for the game I wanted to play to open up. There also wasn't that many good games. I'm more likely to try out other arcades than to return to this one.
Came down for NYE, probably my favorite place we went. Wonderful drinks, fun games, and good vibes. I definitely would recommend this place for a fun evening!
Fun place to go to and they have some good slushies, they also have a lot of pinball machines and a good sized arcade that gives out tickets. i will say there prizes for tickets are not the best but its still something.
Loved it! Great food, atmosphere, and games...was impressed! For pinball fans like me a must stop. Some of the newest tables too
Really fun spot! They have a really decent variety of games. And the cocktail slushies are so fun! Keep up the great work guys.
Great place! We really enjoyed going and playing all the games. Great variety of games, something for everyone.
Our team went to the Operating Room for a group outing. The staff took great care of us, the food was delicious and the atmosphere fun
Good selection of games. Fun place to go with friends to shoot zombies and drink beer. Staff seemed friendly and the prices for drinks were pretty standard for the west Glen area.
They weren't open during posted business hours. After I posted this we went back to our vehicles and while we were out front, someone came out and said they were closed for employee training. Apparently employee training means all of the employees drinking at the bar.
The pizza is awful and the tables are tiny. Games were fine. Came here at bar time and it's much better as just a bar. Tables are still annoying.
Great pinball and beer selection. They rotate new games in and the owner is passionate about maintaining all of the pinball in primo condition.
This place is fun. Just wish it wouldn't get so busy on weekends. Not as enjoyable. But go outside of peak hours and you are to have a great time!
It's a lot of fun. Bit more modern. The staff kept checking up to make sure we didn't need anymore food plus they were really nice overall.
Im only giving two stars because it looked colorful from the outside. How are you closed at midnight (doors locked when I got there), yet you advertise you are open until 1am? This makes your operation look really unreliable.
I was there with my wife, the servers were rude and when trying to close a tab, the bartender said hold on and then proceeded to serve guests that came up to the bar after me. I also won an iPad on the KeyMaster machine and they refused to pay it out ?due to a malfunction?
They had one or two drinks I liked. I'm not much of an arcade person, won't be back
It’s a mix of nostalgia and high-energy fun! Many arcades blend retro classics like Pac-Man and pinball with modern VR games, racing simulators, and rhythm challenges — often with music, lights, and a social vibe.
Both can be great! Solo visits let you focus on your favorite games, while going with friends adds competition, teamwork, and laughs. Many people plan arcade meetups as a casual hangout or even date spot.
Usually just yourself and a way to pay (some arcades still use coins, others use cards or apps). If you're competitive, bring your A-game. If you're social, bring friends or meet new ones over multiplayer games.
Weekdays or early afternoons are usually less crowded — perfect for focused play. Evenings and weekends bring the buzz, especially at barcades or venues with DJs, tournaments, or themed nights.
Absolutely! Arcades attract a mix of casual players and serious gamers. Whether you're jumping into a four-player co-op or chatting between rounds, it's a fun, low-pressure way to connect over shared interests.
Not at all. While many arcades are family-friendly, there are also adult-oriented ones with full bars, 18+ nights, or vintage nostalgia themes. Arcades today cater to everyone — from first-timers to lifelong gamers.
Yes! Many arcades host regular competitions, retro nights, cosplay parties, and more. Whether you're into high scores or just want to watch and vibe, events add an extra layer to the experience.
No worries — arcades are about having fun, not being perfect. Try a variety of games, ask others for tips, and remember: the vibe is more “let’s play” than “let’s win.”
Yes, pinball tables in arcades remain a blast. Their hands-on, skill-driven gameplay delivers a thrill digital games can’t match, blending nostalgia with modern flair. Newer tables from Stern and Jersey Jack feature LCD screens and themes like Avengers or Stranger Things, keeping things exciting. Arcades are seeing a pinball resurgence with vibrant scenes and tournaments like IFPA events drawing crowds. Though less common than video games, pinball’s tactile charm and community vibe make it a standout arcade experience in 2025.
