We came to Detour on a Thursday night and the place was packed for a trivia night - super fun and lively. It's a large open space, great for game nights or other events - they have big screens around the bar that people can play video games on (there's usually a Super Smash Bros or Mario Kart game going on). They also have arcade machines around the room. We ordered a few drinks, and really enjoyed the Sangria. Our server, TC, was a delight as well and made my friend a ?surprise? cocktail that was great.

My new favorite bar in SF, super chill with such a fun sense of community!! Awesome game variety and so many frequent special events

Fun spot to hang out with friends. Grabbed a table and looked at the menu. Once we decided, we ordered at the bar. Waited to pick up our drinks which were reasonably priced for the city and decent. Got a buzzer for the food. Portion size for the snacks we're on the small size but other dishes seemed reasonable. Arcade games were not sticky and they had something for each of us.

Time warp, rediscovered game nights, video games from back in the days , a solid selection of cocktails and their own take on bar food. In short it works. Feeling bored at home and making new friends but don't feel like dressing up or putting on a show...the detour is a nice mix of 'i could care less' being alone in a crowd or hanging with friends while making new ones. Their food selection is an interesting take on bar food. Yes all the common items you can find like burgers and pizza but we tried thei

The Detour a whole vibe. Lots of people playing games and just chilling drinking and eating. The place is small which kinds of sucks because it's was crowded but everyone seem to be in their own world of games. The food was actually really good for bar food. Everything tasted great. The games were fun and to my surprise I like playing the old school games. Had a great time here. Would definitely recommend it as a cool place to chill.

the food here is absolute, overpriced garbage. spent $40 for two tacos and 6 wings to split with a friend. does that seem reasonable? we both agreed it was not worth the amount of food and the taste of the wings was aggressive. go down the street for better food.

Love the Detour, they have a great selection of craft cocktails on tap, boardgames for free play, and more than enough arcade games to keep you busy. The space uses moody, warm lighting to produce a cozy atmosphere. Bartenders are friendly and kind and there's always a fun event going on. Love! Drag bingo is on Wednesdays and it's always a good time.

Love this place! Went to their 1st Fridays appt Presentation night. It was a good time, and honestly great atmosphere any time. Good food, bar specials and arcade games.

The games were really entertaining and the food was just OK, nothing wow. The pizza was mid and the corn dogs were good but hurt my stomach. The drinks on the other hand, 10/10!!! The mangomargs was the best ive had and the service was superior <3. Cute place for date night

Fun place to meet for a drink. Menu has changed a couple times, but still a good spacious place for a gathering. Even if you don't play the video games (which can be quite pricey), there's board games available!

Got to finally check out The Detour in the Castro. It's the newest addition in a line of bar turned gaming clubs in the city but this one definitely delivers. They have a great selection of arcade and pinball games ranging from classic to new. The decor is really well done and I appreciate the addition of the comics plastered to the walls in the back. The bar is busy but friendly and once you get a hold of someone service is quick and awesome. The food is delicious bar food. The pizza has a surprisingly del

Really fun spot for the evening. Loads of arcade games to keep you amused and drag bingo on a Wednesday is great! Friendly staff too. Would be great to see more vegan options on the menu and I wasn't a fan of apple instead of vegan cheese on pizza.

If you're looking for the perfect spot to gather with friends, The Detour is it! Every visit here has been an absolute pleasure. The service is consistently efficient, making us feel welcomed and well-taken care of from the moment we arrive. The food? Absolutely scrumptious. Each dish is packed with flavor, and you can tell the quality and attention to detail are top-notch. The drinks strike that ideal balance between strong and smooth, so they pack a punch without overwhelming your taste buds. The atmosphe

So many cool games to play. Definitely a place to visit at least once. Sadly lots of machines are going out of service. Rush to play before they are gone.

Great place to hangout with friends! With so many games to choose from and several options of non-alcoholic drinks and vegetarian food options. Staff can be a little stern faced. "Nori tots" were a little bland and "fried cauliflower" was flavorful but felt way too oily.

I didn't eat so I can't write the food but the atmosphere was live there was a very pleasant feel about the place I had a beer felt comfortable it was really nice plus they are very dog friendly Nikola had a blast....

Tuesday board game night was a lot of fun. They have very tasty food, and quite a few arcades with options for consoles as well.

Amazing old school arcade with great beer and cider selection. Games range from 25c to $1. Try the NES machine in the back the 25c games and 100 to choose from.

Fantastic place to have a good time with friends while you play video games and arcades. The bar is decent and the crew is super cool.

Really fun place to play arcades, grab a bite and a beer. The machines are well maintained and there's a big selection of games. Pinball machines too!

I have visited many arcade bars around the country and for me the key to a good overall experience is a menu that isn't the expected or at least outside your normal bar food. This recently re-amp menu is a Pan Pacific variety of light dishes to full entrees. The unique corn dogs with Polish sausage paired well with their Tasty Tots. The perfect variety of video games and a great selection of beers and drinks makes this one of the best arcade bars I have visited in the US

Solid arcade if you're looking to play some old games, but bring your own quarters because most of their change machines were broken and a good amount of the games were also not working. They did have a good number of old school games to still make it a good time. Most people are just there to drink and hangout in the front and not actually playing the game as well (not that it's a problem because it makes it easier to play). I enjoyed playing some Mortal Kombat, NFL Blitz, and other games with my uncle t

Honestly would avoid if your under 21, would?ve liked it a bit more if I could just play the games but gotta be 21 to play pac-man apparently. At least let 18yr play the games or something

Food is a bit overpriced imo, decent selection of games. killer queens is free on Tuesdays and there is a board game night as well.

Fantastic place for arcade !! It's good that they are back. They have a lot of food menus than before. Try ice cold beer (ball balance game )is super fun if you get to level 5, you are pro!

cool place, we went for lunch on the weekend because they have a family friendly 12-5. Nice to spend some time, they have arcade games and table games, the food was ok, i think because is a bar they serve salty food so you keep drinking or maybe they made a mistake but anyway you should try it.

Came here while visiting SF from the UK. It was our only our first full day of our trip in the US. The bar was very cool, lots of great arcade games that were really fun to play. However, one of the bartenders was very rude to us and it kind of soured our whole experience. As it was early in our trip, we weren't yet in the habit of tipping literally everywhere, unless prompted. It just isn't a thing in the UK (or anywhere in Europe!) unless you're getting table service. We went to the bar to get our second

Helpful service. Fun range of new and retro arcade games. Thoughtful beer selection. Very accommodating for groups. Call ahead to reserve table for groups greater than six. You can even bring outside food if arranged accordingly.

I hosted a company event here, and it was amazing. Tiffny was the most helpful, gracious hostess, helping me to tailor everything to my needs and budget. The rest of the staff and bartenders were also friendly and great. Food was yummy (the okonomiyaki tots ????), and my vegan coworker also enjoyed her options. The games were a ton of fun, and the overall place was a vibe. Highly recommend!

This barcade was about average in comparison to others I've been to in the past. Has an excellent selection of beer, but the arcade cabinets leave a lot to be desired. There are really just a handful of them in here, and a few of the games I actually cared about playing didn't have fully operational buttons and sticks, making it practically pointless to spend time on.

I not only enjoyed the selection of alcohol here, but the selection of games was a lot of fun as well. From pinball, to old time classics, and to some new stuff I hadn't seen before, Brewcade was a great way to spend a few hours. Great place to have an "adult outing."

Great place for a good time! Jams playing in the background while u kick butt on the arcades!!

Awesome little bar with video games. Like a grown-ups Arcade with Alcohol ??. Great Staff and everyone there was pleasant.

Best trivia night in town. Don't sleep on the tofu wellness bowl and always order the okonomiyaki toys. Tip your bartenders. Love Detour

Located in a modern condo building, Brewcade is a bar with arcade games. Sadly in the Castro, but not a gay bar. The bar serves only wine and beer, with a couple premade/previously frozen food options. The games are fun, but nothing too modern nor too iconic. The games fit the ok to decent category. Some seating when not playing games, but overall a small bar. Service was friendly. Slushy drink was ok but lacked flavor. Some games were broke. Would like to see some more food options, more events, and abili

I can't remember when the last time I had this much fun playing games. Lots of old school arcade games and great selection of drinks.

Awesome arcade! Great game selection! Beer was local and good. Water glasses were a very good size. Super cool place.

A great arcade with tons of great games. I got to crush a bunch of drunk people at Killer Queen because they didn't know we were sober which was pretty funny. ??

Great bar, great games that are reasonably priced, fun time all around. I haven't gone on weekends but if you go on weekdays it's usually pretty chill.

It was a fun spot to go to! Would do it again:)

This place is the best!! We love coming here on the weekends for some pinball.

Awesome place if you like beer and games! Make sure to ask about playing Mario cart at the bar!

Best hangout spot in SF for anyone into games and geeky stuff! Clientele is really nice too, and they host tons of fun recurring events. Unfortunately they have a 4% hidden fee so subtracting 3 stars.

Lovey small arcade and bar with a good atmosphere and good prices. A few new games and a few old ones. I loved playing Killer Queen a 5v5 bee based team work game.

Came here for a friends 30th birthday. Had so much fun. Only downside is the lack of Galaga.

Fun , good food and drinks. Free plays on first Tuesdays

Great entertainment, drag bingo the night I was there. Ok food and drinks.

Fun. Nostalgic. Great vibes.

Terrible bartenders. I have no words for that. This place needs a manager. Literally they call you to come to their station as you are siting on the bar so that you can order. Extremely rude behavior. One bartender said that he is coming as he is sipping his and the other one is not even bothering to reply my request verbally when I asked for water. I could be a great place but not with those people. Go there as a group and shame that behavior. Unfortunately, they need to learn how to work in service indus

Can't rate food cause we didn't have any, but the drinks, service and atmosphere is awesome at this place. It's a video game lovers bar for sure. They have a bunch of classic games as well as a switch hooked up to the big screens that you can play smash bros or Mario kart on if you purchase a drink. Definitely worth checking out.

every coin-op game we played ate two quarters before accepting payment and while there are signs everywhere saying you can ask to get that change back, good luck getting any attention on a packed Friday night. Ultimately it was the unnecessarily sassy attitude from both the bouncer and the bartender killed the mood. Their food is pretty good and there's an eclectic mix of options but the drinks are only average, if overpriced, and at $14 for a sickly sweet margarita they are definitely overpriced. unless

It was awesome this was my first time here and I had such a fun time. It's such a chill year energetic vibe and there's lots of nostalgic games virtual and board games. I took my cousins here for their birthday cause they just turned 21 and they had a blast. Also the bartender was awesome, very nice and overall cool dude. I'm definitely going to come back ??

great energy, drinks, games, comic wallpaper, bathrooms, people. went here on my birthday for the wednesday night drag trivia and unfortunately came too late so missed that but will definitely be going back for the different night of the week events! feels like a welcoming, safe, and happy queer space ??

Awesome spot! Great food. Good drinks at good prices. Fun games. Great place to hang with friends or meet people.

Didn't eat the food so I can't rate that, but the vibes and cabinet selection are great. Pinball machines, fighting games, light gun games, random old arcade cabinets of all types. Slightly small for the crowd but the atmosphere was friendly and welcoming.

Nice medium vibe hangout. We discovered this place when the Lookout had a line around the corner that we weren't willing to stand in. We just walked one block north to find immediate seating, and really quite yummy food. The drinks are good too. They are not weak, but not so strong as to be hard to drink. Though it doesn't have a dance floor, it's a very upbeat place, with lively recognizable dance music, and did I mention the full arcade, complete with air hockey, 2 shooter games, ski ball, end frogger? It

Beautiful pub, with arcade game and also they do game night with smash bros and mario kart we took somedrink, really good the skill shot

Great concept and good selection of beers. I would have expected more classic arcades

cute arcade with mostly working machines and ok drinks. the bartenders are so miserable tho, the white dude with a cap rolled his eyes to my friends like 3 times when they asked about the smash tournament and got drinks ?? just a weird vibe all around lol thankfully we didn't let this ruin our first visit to SF since everybody else in every other bar/rest was so nice and professional. anyway, they have a few good old school arcade machines like The Simpsons, Metal Slug, Time Crisis and Soul Calibur which

Fun place! Good game selection and never though I was going to find such a great beer selection!

I went to see this bar with a friend on a Monday night and I was impressed by their game tournaments. The guys were very excited and the vibes were quite inviting. I wish I would have been more open to talk to them XD ?? ?? Oh, they have lots of arcade games and it's queer friendly. A whole different experience.

Cute idea to mix arcade games and booze. Its fun to play around and drink a few beers. There is a seating area for those who just want to drink, or need a break from playing. Drinks are a little pricey, but it is a themed bar, so it is not totally unexpected. Good beer selection, so that is a plus. Solid place to grab a few friends and play around.

One of my favorite bars in the city!! I love the queer arcade vibes, their drinks are great, and they have lots of different events for different groups of people/interests!

Very nice environment and not expensive at all!

Good and bad. The service was excellent. The bartender was good at his job. Fast, friendly and efficient. And it was pretty busy. Also a good selection of drinks. The bad is the shape of the video games. Half, and I'm not exaggerating, we're broken. I probably spent more quarters in games that didn't respond than ones that did. Fix this one thing and it'd be a five 5? star rating, IMO.

I have been coming here since this was called "Brewcade". It has grown so much and is an amazing bar. If you want to cut loose, have a few drinks, and snack while you have fun, you have found the right place. You will be welcome with open arms and so many options for fun!

This place has great vibes - the food is amazing, the drinks are good, and playing games on the big screen with strangers (new friends?) was the highlight. Some of the classic arcade games are out of order?but hopefully they'll be up and running next time we're in town. We'll definitely be back!

We came as a group of 8 hoping to just play arcade and eat (without necessarily drinking), but they did not even let us into the building since one of us did not have a physical ID with us (she had a photo of her passport but they wouldn't accept it even to let us in; once again we weren't planning to drink). I could understand the policy, but the sad part is that no one from the establishment even informed us about this rule when we emailed them about the reservation. Wish they could me more flexible, espe

Great place to celebrate a birthday! It was very easy to reserve tables & order food in advance. The food was great (love the okonomiyaki tots!) and the games were a ton of fun.

I come here and spend $500 on every visit but, despite the fact that there are plenty of empty tables, they kick us big spenders off tables that we're actively using. They do not support those who support them. I've given them a second chance about this, but no more. Fool me twice, shame on me.

Very cool and hip game bar. Locals playing super smash brothers on the big screen and very friendly bartenders! Love the selection of pinball games and other nostalgic games as well. Very tasty bites to eat!

This place is fun! They have a lot of classic street fighter-like games, some pinball machines, a racing game, Mario Kart, and even Killer Queen! They don't have a full liquor license, so their cocktail selections are pretty limited, but they have a wide selection of brews and a few wines, so most people should be happy.

Love this place, especially on free play and board game nights. They also have trivia on Wednesdays! The drinks and black sesame fries are great. The paprika wings were a little weird but overall a good place for late night snacks and games.

Mixed feelings about this place after the redesign. The fact that they started letting in children during day times kind of ruined my experience until they were kicked out at 6pm. I guess that's what you have to do to get more business and survive in the area. Beer selection is pretty low and cocktails are mediocre, but I always have fun at the brewcade. I'll give it a thumbs up for the fact that they have actually good food for a bar.

Holy cow, I love this place! Playing Killer Queen with 9 friends while having a great beer is hard to beat. The atmosphere is offers an intimate feel, and it's not too crowded on a Thursday night. ?? Brewcade is such a delightful experience, I don't know why I've resisted it all this time!

Love the drag bingo night and trivia night. I had the fried cauliflower and tater tots, great!

A Bar with an arcade with some the classic games. Beer selection is pretty good. Bartender was friendly

Old school games and a good selection of alcohol. Killer Queen is really fun with a group. My company went here for an evening celebration outing and it was a good spot. Most games have places to hold your beer. There are three big screens to watch the game too. The crowd is alright, but sometimes you get people? that take the games way too seriously.

What a wonderful time! Sheree and TC made my first time here, only my 2nd time in SF phenomenal! My company held a party here and reserved the games section. The food was great with very inventive flavors! Much more than typical bar food. Everyone I engaged with was wonderful and really made my time there memorable. For a fun time, great food, and awesome drinks, definitely head here.

We were here for a company event with good foods and drinks! Perfect to have some fun with all the games you can play here. Very friendly and attentive staff. Very clean. Next time worth a second visit!

Amazing place with great beers and some awesome throwback games. Don't leave without playing Killer Queen, it's one of about 11 in the US. Andrew has been holding down the fort by himself both times I've been and the bar was packed. Great service, great beers, cool people. Can't get any better than that.

Unfortunately I'm not as big of a fan since the redesign and expansion. It's harder to find games that are open since it's two different areas, and the design and flow of the spaces are completely different. There's less tap beer options, especially local, which were my favorite part. Now it seems to have a half dedicated to the food and bar, while the spaces that used to be special, like the massive magnetic letter wall, are covered by games despite having plenty of space elsewhere. I really liked Brewcade

Really great layout. Very reasonable priced bar with friendly staff. Cost of games is not bad because you get rewards if you're pretty good. But if your pinball/shooting/ skills are unsolid due to lack of recent practice and/or a deprived junior high experience, your quarters go quick. Get more quarters then you think you'll need.

Great video game bar! Very chill, lots of good games, lots of great beers, and excellent staff. New place is much bigger and now has food. I gotta go with 4 stars though because the food is overpriced.

This is a fun place to hang out after work. Their happy hour is a steal! Great selection of games, although Coin-Op has them beat on selection & the fact that they play fitting 90's music. Be sure to catch this place on free game night.

Great location. In general the bar is a fun place. The good: Not packed, no massive lines for the games, fun retro game selection, great beer variety The bad: Some machines are pretty janky (bad joysticks, unresponsive buttons, blocked coin slots, eaten coins), very expensive beers, many multi-game machines as opposed to original cabinets, pretty loud. I would absolutely go back. Brewcade is unique and fun, which makes it a gem. If they address some of the problems listed, it is entirely possible that th

The place is spacious and the arcade atmosphere is very well done, it's noisy but you can still sit down and enjoy a beer with friends. The pinball selection is great, and they have some classic shooters in okish shape, like Time Crisis. The beer selection is fine, the drinks are mostly premixed and not recommended. The food is run of the mill frozen but it's ok.

It's a small-ish bar so prepare to be jostled a bit but it's a fun spot to visit with friends. Beer menu is robust and they now have a few cocktails as well. I'm also not embarrassed to love their frozen wine drinks. Make sure you and your friends try your hands at Killer Queen. It's a really fun experience!

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s it like visiting an arcade today?

It’s a mix of nostalgia and high-energy fun! Many arcades blend retro classics like Pac-Man and pinball with modern VR games, racing simulators, and rhythm challenges — often with music, lights, and a social vibe.

Is it better to go alone or with friends?

Both can be great! Solo visits let you focus on your favorite games, while going with friends adds competition, teamwork, and laughs. Many people plan arcade meetups as a casual hangout or even date spot.

What should I bring to an arcade?

Usually just yourself and a way to pay (some arcades still use coins, others use cards or apps). If you're competitive, bring your A-game. If you're social, bring friends or meet new ones over multiplayer games.

What’s the best time to visit an arcade?

Weekdays or early afternoons are usually less crowded — perfect for focused play. Evenings and weekends bring the buzz, especially at barcades or venues with DJs, tournaments, or themed nights.

Can I meet new people at arcades?

Absolutely! Arcades attract a mix of casual players and serious gamers. Whether you're jumping into a four-player co-op or chatting between rounds, it's a fun, low-pressure way to connect over shared interests.

Are arcades still just for kids?

Not at all. While many arcades are family-friendly, there are also adult-oriented ones with full bars, 18+ nights, or vintage nostalgia themes. Arcades today cater to everyone — from first-timers to lifelong gamers.

Are there events or tournaments I can join?

Yes! Many arcades host regular competitions, retro nights, cosplay parties, and more. Whether you're into high scores or just want to watch and vibe, events add an extra layer to the experience.

What if I’m not great at arcade games?

No worries — arcades are about having fun, not being perfect. Try a variety of games, ask others for tips, and remember: the vibe is more “let’s play” than “let’s win.”

Are pinball tables still good in this modern age?

Yes, pinball tables in arcades remain a blast. Their hands-on, skill-driven gameplay delivers a thrill digital games can’t match, blending nostalgia with modern flair. Newer tables from Stern and Jersey Jack feature LCD screens and themes like Avengers or Stranger Things, keeping things exciting. Arcades are seeing a pinball resurgence with vibrant scenes and tournaments like IFPA events drawing crowds. Though less common than video games, pinball’s tactile charm and community vibe make it a standout arcade experience in 2025.

Are retro games in arcades still good in this modern age?

Absolutely, retro games in arcades remain a thrilling draw in 2025! Classics like Pac-Man, Space Invaders, and Street Fighter II offer simple yet addictive gameplay, blending nostalgia with timeless challenge. Modern arcade cabinets often feature crisp displays and restored controls, enhancing the experience. These games thrive on quick reflexes and strategy, with vibrant pixel art and iconic soundtracks that spark joy. Arcades host tournaments and leaderboards, fostering a lively community. While modern games dominate, retro titles provide a unique, accessible thrill that keeps arcades buzzing.
