SpaceCat

Reviews Summary

Overall, SpaceCat receives mostly positive feedback for its extensive inventory of comics, collectibles, and gaming items, with many praising the friendly, knowledgeable staff. High ratings highlight the store's nostalgic appeal, fair pricing (mostly), and helpful customer service. However, some negative reviews cite inconsistent pricing (especially for trading cards), occasional unprofessional staff behavior, and a clique-ish atmosphere in gaming events. While most customers enjoy the welcoming vibe and diverse selection, a few feel certain practices (like sudden price hikes or lack of discounts) detract from the experience. The store excels as a local hobby hub but has room for improvement in consistency and inclusivity.

Customer Reviews

I have made some purchases before as it was a convenient location to buy TCG accessories and sets. I recently called in asking if they had a product in store. They said they had the product in hand at $180. I drove down immediately in about 30 minutes only for them to tell me that the new price was low $216. They claimed to have updated the price to new market price at 2pm, but I had called at 3:46pm. I don't have a problem with stores charging whatever they want, but lying about the price and making me dri

Honestly this is my favorite comic shop and I've been to dozens at some point. It's immediately apparent that the comics are insanely organized alphabetically and have a great great selection of back issues and key issues. They're also on top of their pull list and send you email notifications when your pull list is ready. They've never missed an order for me! The owner clearly is a comic book lover and wants you to have best comic book store experience.

Super friendly people. Good vibes all around. Comic selection is A+. I wish they had a few more deck boxes because the few they do have are BEAUTIFUL AND I WANT MORE

This place isn't what it used to be, staff was super unfriendly and seemed like they wanted to rush you out of the store and seemed bothered to answer any questions. I was genuinely interested in buying their 7th edition foil Birds of Paradise MTG card, but noticed it wasn't actually in the case, then I asked the Rude employee with glasses if I could take a look at it and he tells me he doesn't even know where it is, and they his owner might know but he's never there. So they completely missed out on a 2 th

One of my favorite places in the South Bay! There used to be more, but I'll gladly take one over nothing. I really like that they have both comics and retro video games.

Came in because I heard they sell retro games, but it's really a comic book shop first. Tons of new and old issues, with limited prints and staff that know their stuff. The retro game section has some rarer items spread across four shelves. You've got home and handheld consoles and games starting from Sega systems to Nintendo's 3DS. The only thing is that they do charge more than other game shops, but less than outfits like DKOldies and Amazon. Oh, and there's also TCG singles on the other end of the games

great classic comic store vibe. good amount of back issues and stocked well on new releases. keep all these local comic shops in business.

Great shop. Has Comics, Pok?mon TCG, Gaming systems and video games. Helpful staff. Good prices.

Rating 4 stars because while the store is an excellent shop for collectibles, they may have fell victim to the Prismatic Evolutions ETB pricing market. When I visited the location had priced the Prismatic Evolutions ETB at $150 USD. Original MSRP is 49.99, meanwhile tcgplayer shows median selling price for $120. This unfortunately means I could purchase the item from scalpers or other establishments for cheaper. This impacted my decision to do business locally. I don't have any bad blood or ill will towa

Great place. I've known these owners and bought books when they were on Bascom. Great new staff. Great collection of books and good prices. ????????????????

Every time I come into to SpaceCat I feel very welcomed but this one particular time not so much as the moment I walked in I could see the worker mean mugging me as if I were to steal something and I also passed some pokemon cards in a box out in the open and when I came back to check them out they were gone I don't want to insinuate anything but the worker seemed highly racist towards me but other than that the store is very nice and I recommend.

The staff was awesome. Went in with my nephew who is getting into D&D and very inquisitive. The staff were extremely patient, kind, and helpful. Thank you!

Play good selection of a bunch of different products I enjoy browsing and picking something up I completely go out of my way just to go to the shop

Would not recommend way over priced sold me $2 worth of cards for almost $10 will not be coming back

I recently got back into collecting comics so I've been reacquiring my old favorites. Purchased an Uncanny X-Men #275 and found that I already had it when I got home! Bruce was kind enough to allow me to exchange it for a 3.75" Marvel Universe Psylocke action figure. Kevin processed the transaction and provided exceptional customer service. Great prices, toys, comics, cards, gaming, you name it! Highly recommend!

Very cool place. They have old school video game councils for sale. So much to take in as you walk around, ever square inch is utilized. Today is free comic book day so I grabbed me an X-men gold#1 and The Walking Dead #163. While I was walking around I spotted a cool hologram Batman DC Universe rebirth #22 and took it home with me. Over all this is a great comic book store with a friendly owner. If your like me and nerd out on comic books I'd definitely recommend them.

Good shop for comics and trading cards. -Friendly staff.

Went in with my three boys to browse. All of the staff was super friendly and accommodating. The prices seemed fair and we enjoyed our experience. We do live in So Cal but cannot wait to visit the next time we are in town.

When I'd stay in San Jose at my brother's house I go to this comic store and check some variants comics

It's great to have a legit comic book store so close to down town San Jose!

Store is easy to navigate with pretty much everything you'd be looking for. Staff is also very helpful and kind

Yea I had to do this because I have called a number of times to ask questions and the staff was very rude and unfriendly and I felt like I wouldn't want to go in person to the place and I was reading a few reviews and saw how rude the person working here is with responses

First time here and I was pleasantly surprised! I came here for Free Comic Book Day and I was impressed at how the books were stored. They were not squeezed in tight. Plenty of TPBs, video games, toys and other items. I didn't even get to check out everything, as I was there just for comics. This place is much bigger than it appears from the outside! The parking is kind of small but I don't think it would be much of a problem. It might be hard to see, as it is on the side of the front facing store. I will d

Been going to SpaceCat for years since the late 90s/early 2000s from their various San Jose locations. This small comic store has been a staple for myself and family for years; it really is a memorable part of our childhood. They've got comics from many publishers, genres, graphic novels, collectibles, video and other gaming. Can't find something you want? Always worth an ask and all the staff members are always kind to help out. No pressure, no bullying, and no judgement when I walk through the doors.

Tad confused. I was in here earlier in the year to buy magic singles and was told that if I paid in cash there was a small cash discount. Which ultimately made this place number one in my book. Cards add up, even if they are 99cents each so anything helps. Today I went in and there wasn't a cash discount when I paid in cash. Which I was confused. Maybe things changed? Other than that the store is nice. Would recommend to anyone whose looking for retro unique items.

5/4/2024. Small and pack with many comics, etc. Friendly staff

Selling Prismatic Evolutions ETB for $169 on release day. You guys are no different from the scalpers on eBay. Places that do this are ruining the hobby.

This place seemed really nice, wholesome, and welcoming. I have no complaints to give.

Came in to sell my old comic collection. I really enjoyed talking to Bruce, and the whole staff was friendly. Amazing selection. Lots of great stuff to choose from.

Wide selection of comics, graphic novels, card games, and some retro video games. Knowledgeable staff. Love coming here.

As an artist who loves to airbrush and customized motorcycles this is a great place to get ideas we are comic books color schemes backgrounds I mean this is my little honeycomb hideout store you can get very creative it's a great place for creativity and motivation especially with the color schemes new and used issues of comic books a true treasure for any artist

I came in and noticed in their glass display case that they had no MTG collector booster boxes left from a set I'm collecting & one of the workers (hispanic male (?)/blk hair/ glasses) went back and found a new case & let me pick one out. Excellent service & great prices. Literally all the employees are welcoming/helpful.

If you're a new magic player, I do not recommend playing commander here. I love and appreciate the people who runs the place; however, other players there form a clique that if you bring a precon, be prepared to be stomped and see other players helping each other instead of actively playing to win and have fun. As a person who plays magic, I do not appreciate being shamed for making plays that hinder the dominant player's lead. It's a shame, a very nice shop, great people who run the business that I suppo

Awesome place, I came the first time and I couldn't believe I didn't know about this place sooner! The employee that helped us was quick to locate the books I was looking for. And the prices are very reasonable.

Always able to find something good here. Friendly staff and good prices

Great store with great selection of games graphic novels and comics

They have reasonable prices especially if you are looking for pulls on cards. Friendly staff.

I feel like I'm in side the store even though I'm inside my cell phone... I Love You Maps... Thank You Sir Goo Goo & Lady Gaa Gaa... Neon 7

I've heard about this place for a while, but finally had a chance to visit and it did not disappoint! Easily the largest inventory of any comic store in the Bay Area!

Great selection, wide variety of comics. My daughter loves his store for new releases, and they will often give her a great deal on older comics too. Highly recommend.

Great selection of comic books. Not a very good selection of retro videogames. Mostly Xbox and PS2. No Dreamcast or Sega CD. Very few snes and Sega games. I think it could be organized better. Shop is dirty. I edited this review to clarify after the owner?s condescending response below. I originally gave a 3 which I thought was reasonable but made it a 2 due to the below.

Great little comic store, has games, lego, figures, trading cards, and more! Friendly staff as well!

so I have really enjoyed this place I bought comics and for the last 2 years I have gone I would sometimes bring in dc mcfarlane collectibles to sell. I always buy things I know that will be worth a little upfront and down the line. The people I was greeted with were always nice and also would take time for the customers never felt rushed, I would bring in dc mcfarlane figure and would get money for them would be around 40-60 bucks depending what and how much I brought in. I called in Saturday because it was

This Place Has a cool vibe to it I love the selection of video games and yugioh cards they have. Although I will say that the single cards are priced a bit on the higher side. All in all definitely worth checking out.

I had come to this store from 10 miles away pulled into the parking lot and parked alongside another car. (The way every parking lot is layed out) Another car pulled in and blocked the car next to me. The owner of this store got an attitude saying I blocked the car in and demanded I move I told him I didn't block anyone in that the other vehicle is the one blocking the car. I then walked out and moved my car even though I hadn't blocked anyone in. When I walked back to his store he demanded I leave and nev

Not trustworthy. Was blatantly scammed. Went here after just recently getting into collecting comics (after being more of a reader than collector in my childhood) and my naivety was clearly taken advantage in hindsight. Now that I've educated myself better, I realize I was sold a poorly restored comic at the full value of a non-restored one. Very disapponting as I was planning on making this a regular stop when I'm in town based on the great conversation I had with who was working, but at no point was the

I love this place! The management seems a little high strung but hey, it's 2020. Otherwise they have a ton of comics, video games, action figures and statues! Very cool place!!

Awesome comic book shop, they have toys and an amazing selection of classic video games, intellivision, coleco,as well as every Nintendo system. Love to look around, often find some special treasure.will be back.keep going back and keep finding more and more good stuff. Amazing amount of cool things, very friendly staff. Why haven't you stopped by yet?? We'll, we're all waiting. Still awesome, amazing staff as well. Always fun.

Fast friendly service with a plethora of inventory that is very organized and clean. You can even pre-order items or issues on their pullbox ordering site through diamond select.

Most video games are overpriced, they don't negotiate, and give horrible rates for trade-ins. In San Jose, you can find plenty of better video game stores. Only reason they get two stars is because sometimes they have sales which bring overpriced items down to market value.

Been going spacecat since I can remember Great people Great store

First time in store and bought a few manga that I couldn't find in others places. Wish they had school rumble but maybe one day they will. All in all it's a dope place to go checkout. Not just manga but other comics, statues, and consoles. I will definitely be back.

Went in not expecting to leave with so much goodies, but left surprised and happy! It was the first time me and my friends had gone to San Jose and this was one of the places we found to check out. The selection was massive from dark horse comics, to marvel and DC comics to even a few cartoon network comics! The layout of the store was very nice and easy to find things. Staff seemed very friendly and the comics I bought were fairly price. 10/10! When I visit San Jose again, I will definitely be coming back

Not a lot of funko selection if you're tying to buy, but when it comes to selling them, make sure it's Kevin helping you out. As he gives fair prices and doesn't try to low ball you as much but work with you on the price. Both my experiences were great thanks to him!

I think overall it's a great store with a wide selection of collectibles, comics, and TCG cards. It does suck that there seems to be a lack of Yugioh items in general though I don't fault the store. Overall a solid shop to go to. Does help that it's the closest card shop to me so I give it bonus points for that.

The prices on comics are about 20-40% above fair market value, and while they have a good selection of books, the owner is just plain exausting to deal with, with having admited his comic buyer is out right now and he just doesn't want to deal with looking things up and will only offer about 30% of the LOWEST Ebay sale in 2 years not even the average sale. His employees were much better to deal with, as at least they are enthusiastic to try to help you find what your looking for. Cash value on anything ther

I just love this place. They have a great variety of things and often have surprises in their retro games and collectibles. They do a great job of stocking interesting inventory and it's easy to navigate the store. The store staff provide good recommendations and guidance and are always helpful and kind.

Nice store with a wide selection of comics and other nerdy goodies.. I just can't get past some of the experiences I've had with certain employees and the owner. I think there is some unprofessionalism here when speaking to customers. Quite unfortunate. It's an uncomfortable location to shop if you need assistance. If you wanna shop quietly on your own then you'll probably be okay. Just be careful

Their game selection is hit or miss, but not at their fault, it just depends who sells what to them. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. I'm also low-key into graphic novels and they have everything I can imagine. They even had a couple video game art books which I was more than happy to buy!

Five stars super nice staff and they also had Aton of comics and figures I ended getting two comics and a figure

Silverage books are pricey with inventory being about 12 or more short boxes and what is on the wall. Offers 10% off on silverage purchase over 100 dollars cash payment. Will not come down on pricing. Also has older figures, toys and untested video games. Staff was friendly and helpful. Use to feel the need to stop in when in the area and find a deal but will shop else where in the bay area in my quest for back issues and deals. There are so many more comic book stores in the area that I need to experienc

Wow all I can say for such a small building there is a ton going to be revisiting all the time. Their prices are some of the best I have seen even beating online. Mostly magic and Pokemon focus but tons of comics and other great stuff

Nice cozy store with a huge selection of comics and games. The store is lit well, easy to browse, and the staff is very friendly and happy to help you. They moved locations a while ago so some of the old reviews are no longer valid. I'm not into comics but the selection is diverse enough to make me interested. The prices seem fair aswell. The old game consoles are interesting too, so if you're into that you're bound to find something you'll like. Also, the Friday Night Magic community is excellent and manag

Space cats is a great comic book store, the owner is very nice and helpful. I have sold, vintage game consoles and comic books here several times and was give a good price. Cool place

I'm not really the kind of person to leave reviews for places especially when I've had a bad experience, I'm more of I'll just take my business elsewhere kinda guy, but an older man in there who I can only assume is the owner or manger was so disrespectful to the employee that was helping me that I wanted to walk out but I worried it would just cause repercussions for the employee. The older man stood around claiming he didn't have to do anything and saying that one employee didn't have to do certain task b

This is a comic shop of the old guard. The employees will speak to you and develop a rapport, as well as share their passions and interests. Good stock, lots of silver/golden age to drool over. New stuff constantly flows in. Very accommodating with regards to ordering and subscriptions. I go for the comics, my son goes for the TCG.

I was really ready to make this place my go-to comic book store, but one of the employees made me feel taken advantage of and it left a bad first impression. I pre-ordered a limited edition book for $60, and when I went to pick it up, the employee asked me for $100. I think the store thought it would be in high demand, so they wanted to make more money off of it. I wound up asking for a refund a few days later. The owner tried to make it up to me by giving me a discount on the standard edition of the book

Very fun comic book shop. They are well stocked and have a wide variety. The staff can be a bit weird at times, but overall they're friendly and eager to talk to the customers. I want to point out that there are prints that were sourced online that I think are being sold without the artist's permission. Some of them still have the watermark on them, so always ask before you buy.

Great local store for a huge range of comic books as well as video games from all generations. There's some great classics and fun stuff like guitar hero all available for good prices. They also sell TCG like MTG and Pokemon. Just really great for anything nerdy!

Great local game and hobby shop. Staff are knowledgeable and friendly and the stock ranges from everything from comic books to collector cards, video games, even legacy collectibles and vinyl collectibles. This is my absolute must go for anything and all things hobbies

Reasonably priced merchandise and a lot of it. They have games for every video game console both new and old. Lots of comic books. Merchandise and nicely organized and easy to navigate. Friendly people asking to help you find whatever and answer questions. Employees seem knowledgeable about the merchandise. They've obviously had issues with people stealing comic books. There are a lot of cameras and bars on the windows. I was asked to leave my backpack behind the counter.

Odd store and I'm from out of state. I waited for a bit to be helped it's a crammed store people were buying stuff and about to play a game. I started buying about $150 worth of iron man comics and then asked for a restroom and he said he didn't have one for the public? Odd for a table top game store to not have a restroom for his gamers. I would have spent more but had to leave to use a restroom and didn't end up coming back to spend money. He also seemed really off put and bothered that I had to ask for h

The staff is very friendly. I even met the owner and he was pretty funny and friendly as well. I really like the store. I have not been into a comic book store in a while and it was nice to go into one and experience the atmosphere. I even had a nice conversation with one of the customers. I highly recommend this store.

The people that work there are nice and helpful. They don't talk down to you if you aren't knowledgeable about comics. They help you find what suits you best. It's kind of a small store, but I love coming here. I recently unearthed an old stash of comics and cards and they gave me great ideas on how to price and protect my items.

I went with my granddaughter who was interested in a number of titles. The staff was very helpful, reflective of her interests and provided guidance to a number of purchases. Purchases. Also enjoyed conversation with the staff, who were both positive and knowledgeable. Looking forward to my next visit.

We didn't realize how BIG a deal this Batman Fortnite Zero Point crossover has become. I called to ask if they had it in stock. They didn't have and they had been bombarded with calls, but the staff was still courteous and took the time to talk to us and take calls. It was very nice to hear good customer service. We stopped by and bought some Pokemon packs because of their good service, very much appreciated!

AWESOME! The people were nice, and i got a couple games and a console. They all work perfectly. It's been two years and I would like to update my review: I have been going there often and I have never had any issues with anything ive bought or sold. It is an amazing store, and even after they changed locations they continued to be helpful and kind. Thank you.

Super friendly and informative. Answered all my questions

I don't recommend selling your products here first time I try to sell i contacted the owner Bruce he gave me a window to show up 3pm-6pm or 7pm-9pm which I did show up in that window 430pm just to have me wait 90 minutes for their expert to come back from lunch just to be told he didnt have time to look at them after I drove 1.5 hrs for the appointment. Contacted Bruce again and Set up another appointment last week just for him to only look at my high value cards and offer bottom dollar on my products had a

As comic stores go, This one is okay. Selection of older comics is so so. I have seen better. Prices were a bit on the higher end. All and all if you are a comic fan I am sure you could possibly find something there. Prices are not negotiable, which makes it a bit harsh when it comes to comics, I mean for un-rated and certified ones.

Super cool! been in a few times as a beginner collector of comics and funko pops. They have the biggest comic book selection i have ever seen in my life. They have a huge section of 2$ comics as well. They don't have a big pop section but they do have them. It is a comic book store not a funko store though! You may go in and read books off the shelf like a library, and hang out in there! Love this store and will go to it for the rest of my life.

Giant variety of comics, fair selections of magic cards and manga as well as some DND books and paraphernalia. There was also a retro games section that I did not check out but looked worth it's salt. Nice staff, can hold a conversation. Cramped atmosphere, but it adds to the library feel of the establishment. Loved it.

This place may be good for comics, but I tend to go there for trading cards. These cards are really over priced and it feels as if they only want to push their comic books. One time I called to ask if they carried a specific trading card product, and they asked me if I was local, and if I was in their database before they would answer my question. Then, I got an absurd price for the product! Also, I was in the store one day and asked how much a pack of 100 penny sleeves cost, and was quoted $10. For those u

This place has everything you can think of. Loved it. Friendly staff as well. Mostly comic books and graphic novels, not too many toys aside from vintage games.

I would rate this a 5 stars as I really enjoy visiting this store for Magic card bundles and comics just for fun and reasonable prices. I am rating this 3 stars because an employee really turns me off when I visit by the name of Jeremy. I asked him why he enjoys working there and he responds it's none of my buisness and he doesn't like Magic cards or Comics...? Really turns me off to deal with employees that don't know how to reasonably talk to a customer. It's easy to suggest ONE THING you enjoy about an e

Great shop! I had the chance to go there in between a travel i had in San Jose. The variety of produts and comics was great and the prices where quite resonable! I also got extra free comics with my purchase. Great comic shop!

All the new comics, boxes of sale books, and a deep supply of old stuff too! Also a lot of Magic the Gathering cards, old game consoles (and games too). Friendly knowledgeable staff too! A great store - don't miss it!

I have heard of inflation but 25 dollars (cash) 28 on card for a STRUCTURE DECK is actually highway robbery. I had wished I had been there when my friend purchased the decks. On TCG Player they are 14.99 at TCG direct prices already more costly option. I have always advocated supporting local card shops but today I wish I had bought this online. **EDIT** The owner of the shop did indeed refund me the correct price of the decks when I returned. I am thankful that that they followed through and had great cus

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s it like visiting an arcade today?

It’s a mix of nostalgia and high-energy fun! Many arcades blend retro classics like Pac-Man and pinball with modern VR games, racing simulators, and rhythm challenges — often with music, lights, and a social vibe.

Is it better to go alone or with friends?

Both can be great! Solo visits let you focus on your favorite games, while going with friends adds competition, teamwork, and laughs. Many people plan arcade meetups as a casual hangout or even date spot.

What should I bring to an arcade?

Usually just yourself and a way to pay (some arcades still use coins, others use cards or apps). If you're competitive, bring your A-game. If you're social, bring friends or meet new ones over multiplayer games.

What’s the best time to visit an arcade?

Weekdays or early afternoons are usually less crowded — perfect for focused play. Evenings and weekends bring the buzz, especially at barcades or venues with DJs, tournaments, or themed nights.

Can I meet new people at arcades?

Absolutely! Arcades attract a mix of casual players and serious gamers. Whether you're jumping into a four-player co-op or chatting between rounds, it's a fun, low-pressure way to connect over shared interests.

Are arcades still just for kids?

Not at all. While many arcades are family-friendly, there are also adult-oriented ones with full bars, 18+ nights, or vintage nostalgia themes. Arcades today cater to everyone — from first-timers to lifelong gamers.

Are there events or tournaments I can join?

Yes! Many arcades host regular competitions, retro nights, cosplay parties, and more. Whether you're into high scores or just want to watch and vibe, events add an extra layer to the experience.

What if I’m not great at arcade games?

No worries — arcades are about having fun, not being perfect. Try a variety of games, ask others for tips, and remember: the vibe is more “let’s play” than “let’s win.”
