Retro Game Bar

Retro Game Bar

Reviews Summary

Retro Game Bar is overwhelmingly praised for its nostalgic atmosphere, extensive selection of retro games across multiple consoles, and creative themed drinks. Most reviewers highlight the friendly, attentive staff and fun, inclusive vibe, making it a favorite for groups and solo gamers alike. The $5 all-night gaming fee is frequently mentioned as a great value. While the food receives mixed reviews—some love the themed options, others find it mediocre—the overall experience is highly rated. A few note crowded weekends or occasional service hiccups, but these are outliers. Perfect for gamers seeking a unique, laid-back spot to relive classics.

I visited Portland for the first time and found this gem of a place! The vibe is excellent, the food is excellent, the drinks are excellent, the staff is excellent, and the game selections are excellent. If you want to play video games with your friends, this is the spot to do it! They have every console you could think of, and all of the hit games for each of the consoles! Definitely a great place for a first date, or for hanging out with your friends! They keep everything clean and offer sanitized wipes f

Wow what a neat concept and awesome place! You pay a flat rate per person to pkay any games for the whole night, and then can pay for food & drinks if you like. My mom and I had an absolute blast; she got to show me all these old games she would play as a kid, including Toejam & Earl. We absolutely loved getting to pick from so many consoles and games, moving between tables and couches. The staff were so helpful and I love that they set it up for you (so make sure to tip!) I will definitely be going again

Super quiet on a Wednesday night. They had a large selection of consoles, games, and stations. Staff was friendly and I would love to return again. Only had an order of their fries so I'm not sure what the food is like. Hope to find out next time. :)

Super fun bar full of video game consoles and some arcade-style games. You pick out your game from a locked case, tell a bartender, and they get it for you, plus controllers, and get the game running for you. They ask you not to touch the consoles. They can be slow to get to you depending on how busy it is. We were completely forgotten once. The arcade games are home models and are very light weight so they wiggle around a lot. There's a back patio for smokers (and those that don't mind smoke) and I believe

What a rad bar! Over 1,500 nostalgic games to play, several TVs to play at, even a private room to rent at a fair price. Don't be fooled by the games as this is a bar setting and you must be 21 and up to enter. You won't break the bank here, as long as you purchase food/drink you can play all you want for $7 per person. The slushy drink was really good and strong in the best way, and the fries are yummy. Awesome people working there and just a fun time, I'm such a fan and I can't wait to go back!

Amazingly cool and fun retro gaming bar. I love the music and atmosphere. And they have Ablis CBD seltzer on tap??

Went here and had some fun definitely, the fries and fry sauce were DIVINE. The games on selection is great too especially playing them with someone. Overall the place was fantastic and I'm going here for every Anniversary

This place is so cool! You can check out retro games for a huge variety of consoles. You can sit as long as you want and it's all free, but you should order one or two of their retro-game-themed drinks.

The ambiance is of course interesting, that's probably how you heard of the place. Each table has a couple consoles (typically 2) attached to it (tables are first come first serve). They have a huge library of games, you just ask for one at a time. They probably have whatever you played as a kid. They bring out the controllers. You order and coordinate everything at the bar. I was especially impressed with the food and drink. The food is reasonably priced ($10-$15), reasonably healthy (bowls with rice, top

This is legit one of the coolest places in Portland the whole place is decked out in retro gaming head to toe Every table has their own different gaming console that you can choose a game and play with whoever you are eating with The food is also great!!! I think this idea is so unique and fun and it is for people of all ages I highly recommend coming and checking this place out!!!

So fun! They have literally hundreds of games including DK bongos and the infamous power glove. The treetrunks apple pie slushie literally tasted like applesauce, definitely dangerous. The food slapped and the staff were great. Come play monkeyball and have fun

Great atmosphere and a pretty big game selection that varies across several platforms. The food and drinks all have themed names, like Yoshisoba, SPAM Button, and Kongkatsu. The staff is friendly and the prices are good. There's parking in the back, but street parking is pretty easy to find in this area. I've never had to walk more than two blocks. There are entrances in the front and back, and the unisex bathrooms are always clean and stocked. I've been to a lot of gaming bars along the West coast over the

Amazing atmosphere, beautiful decor, lovely selections of games just to browse or try out. Simple and easy place to chill with friends for a night out of gaming or even social outing. Good food, good drinks and a wonderful environment into the late night of Portland.

Amazing vibes, atmosphere, availability of games, and good staff. The garlic ranch and the fry sauce that was given for the $15 "Tender's Game" was god-awful. I could tell it was some sort of cheap brand, and it didn't taste good. The chicken tenders were also some cheap brand, not worth $15. Fries were great! I will happily be returning upon the next opportunity. 10/10 place to go overall.

Had a FABULOUS time! Gabby was the BEST bartender! The food is out if this world delicious and unique - excellent music and while I'm not a gamer - no one seemed to hold that against me and it looked like everyone playing games were having a ball!! Wonderful covered patio with heaters for those who needed a "breath of fresh". Couldn't have asked for a more fun evening. Thanks to ALL at Retro Game Bar ... I'll be seeing you soon!

If you go as one or two people, this is freaking great! If you plan to go as a group (4 or more), it's a little more complicating with getting the right seat to accommodate you if you want a multi player game with more than 2 people. The vibe was awesome. The drinks were great. We only had appetizers for food, but the ones we had were delicious!

We got there shortly after opening, and by 6:30 it was pretty busy. The game selection is top tier, the drinks are delicious, and the atmosphere made me feel like I was in the coolest basement from back in '97. When you go, you know: Now you're playing, with Power.

If you have anyone in your life that likes video games this is the place. Super intimate setting with private game room and open patio. This is the best place to take any gamer in your life. Food and service is top tier.

The top gaming bar in Portland. Plenty of retro games with various systems. You can even play games at the bar! You can play multiplayer, arcade and request to change the game. Theme is absolutely on point and atmosphere is very relaxed. An awesome casual place to hangout and game!

This place blew me away! Service was amazing, the bartender was super helpful and very friendly, the gentleman who rans the games was also very helpful. The food was top notch, we got the Golden fries 64, and they were delicious, we also got many of the custom cocktails all were appropriately named and taste amazing. The games was mind blowing we played everything from golden eye 64 to new games like tekken 8 the selection was mind blowing. I recommended this place 10/10

It's a cute lil place, super fun concept. I thought the food was okay but my friend thought it was ?trash? we both agreed we wouldn't come back for it? (however if you're already there it's a decent option.) The server who took our order was really nice. Overall chill but mid.

$5 to play all night? great place. They had come of my favorite classics like Ms PAC Man, Mortal Kombat, Mario World and Streetfighter! The button spam and wings were delicious

Amazing atmosphere, drinks were perfectly mixed and the staff is so awesome. Very clean and fun environment. Extremely large selection of games for MANY systems. The food was good as well ? try the gumbo if they have it in the menu. Youll love it.

Oh my gosh this place is amazing. They have so many old games that I've been dying to play for years. The drinks were delicious, if a little on the expensive side for what you get. But being able to play games I haven't been able to since I was a kid made it worth it. The food was also delicious and on theme.

Such a cool little spot! Games and food and drinks!! So much to do! Awesome place to hang out ??!

What a fun place to hang out and have some drinks with friends! They have a very large selection of consoles and games with quite a few rare games. We will certainly be back and will share this place with more people. My husband is a little retro game collector so he loved it too.

Awesome place to hang out and enjoy a tasty drink! Childhood memories are brought back and I'm sure everyone will find their perfect game to play.

The place is really fun, the stuff is kind and the food was great. I'd recommend this place.

We got some drinks and played early Nintendo games at the bar. It was so fun, we have lived in Portland for years and this was so fun!!

I had a good time here on my first visit. Met up with a few friends and had drinks on the patio. The drinks we ordered were really great! Ordered the Ramona Flowers and Sailor Saturn. Staff was friendly. I didn't get to try out any games but I look forward to coming back and giving it a try.

One of the best bar experiences I've ever had in OR. Friendly staff helped get us settled without any fuss or pressure, and the vibe of the bar had me feeling safe and pumped to play all the games of my childhood. Prices were fair and made clear so we knew how much we were going to pay at the end of the night. Bar patrons were all fun people to be around and I was able to play a full round of Mario party with my wife without any issues. Overall, would definitely recommend to anyone looking to catch up on ol

amazing bar! cheap beer, amazing games, and super friendly staff with great recommendations! would go here every day if i lived here! free games after 11 is a great deal!

Preface: Overpriced foods. Come for the entertainment but eat beforehand. Product: 5/5 The food was good and the ability to play many games was as expected. Value: 2/5 Bought a drink that was filled to the brim with ice. Paid full price for something I can drink in easily one go. Maybe 4oz? Bought 'shareable' chicken wings for $11...but I didn't know that it would only have about 6. That's practically $2 a single wing (bone-in). Furthermore, they didn't inform me there was an extra charge for using a cred

This place is much much more than their website and pictures lead on! I brought a group for a stop over during a bachelor party and between us all I think we tried 80% of the drinks menu and had a blast in their private room. The Retro Game Bar will be a frequent stopping place for my circle of friends!

Personally, the idea and the general vibes in this bar, are great. I've been here a few times and I've usually loved my experience. Unfortunately, today my waiter ruined my experience. Rolling their eyes at me, being impatient, and generally dismissive. I understand bad days, but I shouldn't be subjected to yours. I still will give a 4 star because it's usually a great experience, but tonight was a bummer.

2022 Review with 2025 update: Do you like old video games? Yeah? Then head here. $5 all u can play. Friendly staff and u can play games sitting up at the bar, their booths or chilling on their couches. Their menu as of March 2022 is Asian inspired and delicious af. 2025 Update: it's $7 for the game pass now, still worth it. Food and drink prices are reasonable. Theres a covered patio with heaters. They have a private room to rent that has guitar hero (and any game u want) that's pretty banging. Sam

Atmosphere was cramped and very loud, staff were always in a rush and had no qualms about pushing their way right past you but it was Saturday and they were working hard. I wouldn't recommend this place for a group larger than five or so, maybe on a weekday when it's less crowded. Overall it's a fun bar that offers a unique experience and a wide variety of games, even if half of the groups were all getting down on some Mario Party.

The food was great (albeit the curry I got was a bit spicier than anticipated, the bartender even confirmed it), the drinks were great, the gaming was great. I enjoyed seeing all the retro stuff displayed around the bar and that anywhere you sat, you could play a game. We went on a Friday night and they even had a live DJ spinning records - it was pretty freaking cool. I didn't enjoy the loud, rambunctious guys playing Smash Bros, but it's just part of the atmosphere/territory I suppose. That being said, I

This place is a dream - seriously the coolest themed bar in Portland. If you played NES, SNES, N64, Genesis, GameCube, PlayStation, Xbox and even Dreamcast growing up prepare to be delighted. The food is really good too! Not just typical bar food. They have a great couple curry dishes, a yakisoba dish and a teriyaki kind of dish. Vegetarian friendly. Healthy stuff. ??????

Very cool little barcade. Service was excellent and friendly and the atmosphere was very cool, great seating and games all around the bar. Tons of retro game memorabilia and decor. Highly recommend for any game enthusiasts who want to just chill, have a drink, and play games.

Place is chill for what it is. No frills drinks and games. Come to enjoy a low-key night with friends or a drink and some retro game time to yourself.

This place is the best! It's been my birthday tradition for two years now.

Really awesome bar concept. The drinks and food are both really good. They have an insane collection of games and consoles. The staff are all super cool and helpful. With everyone having a nostalgic blast, the vibes are unbeatable. We will definitely be back soon.

If you want go somewhere fun go to Retro Game Bar. Its really cool there the staff are great. Here are some picks I got today.

I just had a party here last night in their private party room, and it was such a wonderful experience! The staff were fantastic, the food was great, and the private room was so much quieter than the rest of the bar. In fact I could barely hear the rest of the very packed bar from in there. And at only $30 an hour for the room, it felt like quite a deal, especially for guaranteed space in the bar. My friends and I all had an amazing time. I will say that if you go on a Friday night, you should expect lines

This place is great! Friendly staff, reasonable prices for food and alcohol, and a HUGE selection of games. If there's a hard-to-find game you've been itching to play chances are they have it. They even have some Japanese imports!

This is my go to spot to drink and play video games. They also have nonalcoholic drinks as well that are amazing. Large game selection on multiple consoles. Friday and Saturday is packed so you might be waiting around a bit for your turn to play. They have a back patio. There food is really good I wish they had more choices. And shareable plates. It's full meals instead of shareable plates. Overall 9 out of 10.

Had a great time. Drinks were excellent and the game options were amazing. Wish I could have stayed longer, I'll be back.

We just happened across this place as we were going to get drinks at the market next door. We stopped in and had a great time! Friendly and helpful service, great themed decor. We paid the cover charge to play games but didn't have any food or drinks as we were headed elsewhere soon. They had every gaming system imaginable as well as board games to play. They were even advertising hosting a Zelda themed drag show happening there at the end of June! Would totally recommend this place.

Very cool place! The bartender was super chill and was excited when I requested an uncommon drink. Its super cool to see all the old games and have access to them. Highly reccomend.

I LOVED the vibe, environment, staff, and variety of games here! My partner and I showed up 2 hours before closing not sure of what to expect and we were pleasantly surprised! The bartender was super nice and the drink selections were perfect (highly recommend the alcoholic peach slushie)! The bartender even gave us a discount since it was our first time and we only had a couple hours before closing. They had a large variety of gaming consoles and video games, along with classic arcade games. I wish we coul

Went as a group of 4 on a Monday night. Had a blast. Lots of games readily available for a small fee. Nice little nostalgia hit. Love that they have nicely curated zero-proof beverages available. The staff was so nice and helpful too. Highly recommend! A+

Come early and grab a table. Ask the friendly staff to help you pick out games. I was playing classic games, and asked for a good co-op game. They recommended Super Mario bros Wonder, which came out pretty recently! Had a amazing time with my family. Absolutely a amazing time!

This place is so cool. I went there for trivia and the food was beyond my expectations and SO tasty. Definitely a place that is fun to meet up with other people.

Small menu but a lot of really good, not typically bar food. There are stations by most booths for retro consoles along with some classic arcade cabinets throughout. Impressive console game collection available. Staff were very friendly and helpful

Super disappointed. We looked up places to go before we went out today and had all agreed on this place because we all love to game. We got there and were extremely disappointed. It is an extremely cool concept but don't expect to get a table at any point if you get there later. We went after a personal sporting event(aka rec league game) and there were no tables. We took our time went out to the back had a couple drinks waited it out but never got a chance to play anything. I don't blame the customers if I

Easily one of the coolest bars i've been to, for many reasons, but primarily their extremely unique atmosphere. Instead of board games or arcade machines, they made it unique and went for actual video games. You can use classic systems or the brand new ones, and there is a wide selection. You can get reasonably priced drinks that taste great here, and they have fantastic Ramen. A place to go for any nerd or someone feeling nostalgic.

Amazing bar for all types of gamers. Law (the master of ceremony here) and his crew have created a great menu of food and drinks. An inclusive and fun space catering to nerds and nerd-adjacents. Lots of cool events and specials, and they just opened a karaoke style game room that you can book. They have many different systems and a library of games available in the main bar and private room. If you haven't been, it's worth checking out, and if you have, then you are probably already a fan.

This is an awesome space to visit with friends and enjoy some great rotating drink specials and classic games! Make sure to get here early so you have enough space for you group, as it can fill up fast. Gabby is a great bartender and will always make you feel welcome! There is a back patio here too, which is covered.

a great, one-of-a-kind place as far as i can tell. what you see in the pictures is what you get. did lots of stuff on my visit to portland but cant stop thinking about this place! great drinks, great atmosphere, ridiculous selection of games. great staff as well, i could only imagine how much you have to do between cooking, drinkmaking, helping out with games, on top of cleaning and tech maintenance/replacements. i did NOT want to hassle the bartender too much (there were only one or two people working) bu

Nostalgia, both barrels. Positive atmosphere, all manner of game systems, free play arcade, good drinks. Picked this place to catch up with a friend and have no regrets.

Was visiting friends who live in OR, and they took us here. This place has great vibes, and I had a great time reliving my college days of Mario Party and Smash tournaments while taking shots. The food would fit right in at any anime convention, and the art on the walls was really cool as well. I'm a nerd and loved the patent diagrams hanging on the wall in the bathroom. The outdoor space was also quite enough that it was a great spot to step into when getting over stimulated. 10-10 would hit up again when

Definitely the place to go with friends or a date. Chill atmosphere and a great selection of games/consoles. The drinks were strong and well-priced. I didn't order any food besides fries but they were delicious.

This place was amazing! My partner and I arrived two hours to closing, and wished we'd come by sooner! They have a fantastic setup where you can play a huge variety of games across many different consoles (Xboxes, Playstations, SNES, GameCube, N64, etc), plus several arcade cabinets. All games are accessible with a single cover charge too, so no pay-as-you-go nonsense. The drinks were excellent too, especially their Princess Peach Pina Colada Slushies.

Retro Game Bar in Portland is a fantastic spot for all your retro gaming needs. The service is top-notch, with friendly and helpful staff who are always willing to assist with any questions or concerns. The selection of games is impressive, with a wide variety of consoles and titles to choose from. The drinks are delicious and the atmosphere is welcoming and laid-back. Overall, I highly recommend checking out Retro Game Bar if you're in the Portland area and looking for a fun and unique gaming experience.

A lot of fun, well known vintage games to play as well as some more obscure favorites. The servers are friendly and attentive and it was easy for me to change our my games for new ones. The only reason I am giving this place 4 stars instead of 5 is that I really don't think their food is as good as it could be. I've had the chicken curry twice now and it's been just really meh, it tastes like instant/frozen microwaved food if that makes sense? I've definitely had a lot of better bar food.

Any bar with TurboGrafx 16 and curry fries is A+ in my book. Amazing game selection. Great vibe and concept. Excellent drinks, staff, and service. Saturday crowd is tons of fun and not overwhelming. Eager to return!

went to this spot today for my boyfriend?s birthday and we had so much fun!!! we loved the selection of games and the fact that they're all free is incredible. Really great beers on tap and the hot dog was so surprisingly delicious! Staff was super friendly and nice too. We'll be back :)

Awesome place, great food, drinks and lots games to choose from! They have a new menu they are rolling out with lots of delicious options for everyone. Staff is very friendly and attentive, and willing to go the extra mile to make sure you have a good experience. All of their games are actual physical copies and not emulated which to me makes it even more impressive. Rotating tap list and constantly changing drink specials mean there's something different to try every time I come in (try their slushies!).

Food was better than I was expecting, though unsurprisingly the curry is very VERY mild. Lots of consoles to choose from and tons of cool classic games, good spot to chill for the evening.

Amazing concept for a bar with a huge selection of games and gaming systems, ranging from old school ataris to ps5. The food here is amazing but the staff and drinks are even better. Hunter is the best bartender ever! Also big plus that they have a nice covered back patio. Definitely one of my favorite spots in PDX

UPDATE: They no longer charge if you just want to have a beer and a chat. They only charge if you are playing games. Apparently there was a big misunderstanding when they began charging to play. The amount is fair and you can opt to be a member allowing unlimited play.. Great tap list, friendly employees, awesome selection of games. There's so much more than meets the eye!! Thanks owners for clearing up the original misunderstandings! --------------------------------------------------- All I wanted was

Always a good time. Excellent themed Drinks, friendly welcoming vibe, and a great selection of retro games. It's a family run neighborhood bar, I can't imagine how long it took to amass such a great collection of consoles and games. Gamer or not, check it out. Great for groups of friends, as they have tons of booths/couches set up, with a tv and consoles at each location. It's even fun for solo gamers, as you can sit at the bar and play a game on the various tvs up behind the bartender. This is the kind

I highly recommend this place. It is ideal for anyone who played late 80's/early 90's consoles (NES, SENS, Sega Genesis, N64, PS1). They have loads of consoles setup and multiples of most of them. I've been 3 times and was able to play whichever systems I wanted to. They have a massive selection of games, and I believe they'll pull out games from their library if you ask. The atmosphere is perfect. Comfortable and a little grungy in the way you want from a retro gaming place. It takes me back to Pizza an

Cozy bar vibes, only had a beer and some fries, but they were great! And as the name suggest, they have the retro game (*sigh*, just felt myself age saying that). lots to choose from. Had a very good time!

I'm new to this bar, but thought it was awesome and want to go back

Usually enough people when I've gone to feel like a bar, but not so much that you can't find a console to play on! The perfect amount of busy. Good drinks, decent prices, HUGE selection. Fun way to spend a night!

This is such a fun and clever bar! It's not very large, and was relatively busy the whole time we were there. You order at the bar. Menus had good variety. Creative game themed drinks. The games themselves were super fun and there were SO many options. Arcade video games and gaming systems. There are even a few board games. Our group enjoyed Simpsons, TMNT, Mario Kart, Mario party, basketball, and more! I'm sure we'd go there again.

Great place for gaming, but their food, beer and mixed drinks are also awesome! This spot has an outdoor patio, indoor seating and even games at the bar. So many options on gaming systems and games. Will definitely be back soon for more gaming and noodles!

This place is a gem. Food is really good, workers are friendly and the game selection and set ups are top tier. I've moved away from Portland and keep looking for another place that lives up to Retro Game Bar.

This place is an absolute treat! So many consoles and games to choose from, with a great selection of drinks and killer cocktails made by the awesome bartenders. Slushy cocktails that are delicious and change often. Also the bar attracts a pretty chill crowd who all have a love in playing games or watching others play. Everything about this bar has a lot of thought put into it from game setup to seating and couch arrangement. I have my favorite bars in Portland and RGB is 110% among those now. Don't forget

Going to be one of my local haunts. Food is good and reminiscent in the best way possible, of the stuff you ate when you were playing Zelda into the early morning. Cocktails are nerdy and themed, and vegan options available. Many games to choose from, and the atmosphere is relaxed.

A smaller venue for sure but the mixed drinks are solid and unique and the collection of authentic games/consoles are top notch. I've been to dozens of similar venues and many have worn down controllers and half functional everdrives in every console. This is far closer to what you remember from your childhood and a genuinely nice way to burn thru an evening with friends. Also don't sleep on the food menu, there's some solid choices that are just as good sober as they are after a few hours with their cock

One of the funnest experiences I've ever had, Gabby and Eddy will set you up for a good time! They took care of us and made sure we had the BEST experience.

Awesome bar with a great concept; drink beer and play retro video game consoles. Good tap selection, and prices are very reasonable considering you get free entertainment. They also have on weekends a "brunch" where it's a cereal bar and is open to all ages. I recommend going here if you'd like a blast to the past.

Very cool place to meet for drinks, grab a snack and play some games. Service is friendly and informative. Very clean, and better than expected food and beverage.

Place is great! Wanted to hangout here for a while, and finally was able. Top notch place! Will make it a regular stop! ??

A ton of retro games and only a 5$ pass per night for unlimited play. Great atmosphere. The food wasnt very good, and the place is a bit small. Still a great place to bring your friends for drinks and games!

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s it like visiting an arcade today?

It’s a mix of nostalgia and high-energy fun! Many arcades blend retro classics like Pac-Man and pinball with modern VR games, racing simulators, and rhythm challenges — often with music, lights, and a social vibe.

Is it better to go alone or with friends?

Both can be great! Solo visits let you focus on your favorite games, while going with friends adds competition, teamwork, and laughs. Many people plan arcade meetups as a casual hangout or even date spot.

What should I bring to an arcade?

Usually just yourself and a way to pay (some arcades still use coins, others use cards or apps). If you're competitive, bring your A-game. If you're social, bring friends or meet new ones over multiplayer games.

What’s the best time to visit an arcade?

Weekdays or early afternoons are usually less crowded — perfect for focused play. Evenings and weekends bring the buzz, especially at barcades or venues with DJs, tournaments, or themed nights.

Can I meet new people at arcades?

Absolutely! Arcades attract a mix of casual players and serious gamers. Whether you're jumping into a four-player co-op or chatting between rounds, it's a fun, low-pressure way to connect over shared interests.

Are arcades still just for kids?

Not at all. While many arcades are family-friendly, there are also adult-oriented ones with full bars, 18+ nights, or vintage nostalgia themes. Arcades today cater to everyone — from first-timers to lifelong gamers.

Are there events or tournaments I can join?

Yes! Many arcades host regular competitions, retro nights, cosplay parties, and more. Whether you're into high scores or just want to watch and vibe, events add an extra layer to the experience.

What if I’m not great at arcade games?

No worries — arcades are about having fun, not being perfect. Try a variety of games, ask others for tips, and remember: the vibe is more “let’s play” than “let’s win.”
