Penn Social

Reviews Summary

Penn Social is generally well-regarded as a fun, spacious venue with diverse activities like games, dancing, and events. Many praise its friendly staff, especially bartenders, and enjoy the lively atmosphere. Food receives mixed reviews—some love the wings and pizza, while others find dishes bland or disappointing. The downstairs area is popular but can get crowded, with occasional complaints about cleanliness or maintenance. Happy hour and drink quality are highlights, though pricing and service hiccups occur. A few criticize strict bouncers or late-night entry policies. Overall, it’s a solid spot for groups and events, with room for improvement in consistency.

Customer Reviews

Bartenders are friendly, there are game tables, and it's a convenient location. The food is unmemorable. I was hopeful by the promise of Detroit-style pizza but in practice the crust was fairly soft and the sauce and toppings weren't particularly flavorful.

Came here for the Christmas drinks and really enjoyed my time. Friendly bartender, a great spiked cider that wasn't too sweet. And nachos piled high with cheese and toppings. Go and have a good time.

Scam. Since when is a ?pint? the same size as a mixed drink? In no definition of the word pint in any country or region is it this big. The cup is clearly marked 12oz as mentioned in another review, the owner replied saying it's 14oz when filled to the brim (which it was not). An American pint is 16oz and a British pint is 20oz, far off from the 12oz that is given to you. Completely scummy tactics, the OZ of the drink should be listed, not some seemingly arbitrary definition of the word pint. The owner is

Came here for Profs and Pints. The fact that they host these events gets them an automatic star. Good selection of beer on tap and the prices are decent. Very efficient bar service; they handle large crowds well. We had the hot honey pizza and BBQ wings (they gave us the wrong sauce but we were too hungry to care). Food is solid and about what you expect for a bar/event space. Can't say I'd hang out here outside of an event; just isn't my thing.

I went for the Firehouse Fridays event with country swing/line dancing and it did not disappoint. There was plenty of room and good vibes all around. I highly recommend if you're looking for a fun activity or a place to go dancing. The event lasted 9:30-12:30 with the lesson at 8:30?the cover is $15

Went for a prof and pints event so not sure if that was a factor vs just going in on a regular day. The beer I ordered was terrible (not because of the style but because it was completely flat and stale from the tap). The cheeseburger sliders were good but I got a side salad for an upcharge which they served to me completely undressed- not a drop of dressing and they didn't ask me if I wanted it when i ordered so I presumed it was a house dressing, but it is literally dry greens, tomatoes, and onions for an

I was here to attend a profs and pints event. I got there early so I could grab something to eat. I can't remember what it was called, but it was pretty much a turkey Panini with some supposedly spicy relish on it and a few other things. It had very little flavor. It was served with chips. As far as the Acoustics go, I would probably pick a better place next time. The microphone and speakers worked fine, but the background noise of people picking up dirty dishes and other types of things like that we're ver

Completely dead on the fourth of July around 5pm. Decent games. Got there for the happy hour, where the bartender was very nice and polite. Food was a complete opposite experience. We got a cafeteria like tray, with four broken chips, grocery store salsa (bottom shelf), and it looked extremely unappealing. Judge for yourself whether it tasted good or not (it was horrible). How hard is it to make a decent quesadilla??

charged me full price for a soda refill after i?d purchased 3 drinks and an appetizer. Skeezy and greedy. I'll be telling my sober friends not to come back here.

This place is absolutely amazing. The location is great, the place is massive like an iceberg, upstairs looks big but it's just the tip, downstairs is where the fun is. If you're a sports fan you have 360 degrees of giant screens showing all major professional sports. Staff are amazing. They make you feel at home. I'll be returning. Many times

The food was some of the worst food I've ever had. This was our first time in D.C and we had high hopes. The nachos were almost like a joke. There was zero love in that food. We were also told we couldn't get any happy hour prices and it was still 30 minutes until happy hour was supposed to be over. There were some nice games and great tvs with the games on but that was all that was good.

Great venue for profs and pints! I was worried about it being too much like a bar but there is a stage and it was set up lecture style. Crap dip with bread was good

Came here on a few different Saturday nights. It's a good location to make a quick stop in during a night out or before heading to Capital One arena. Different games to play. It does get packed tho. I mean shoulder to shoulder squeezing through people packed during busy nights. Not everyone's taste, good place to stop but definitely not a final destination for a night out.

Great place for an event. Was here as a vendor and the basement where the main venue area is is really large has a nice dance floor and also arcade games, attended for a bar mitzvah.

My husband and I went for Bingo Loco (downstairs at Penn Social), which was awesome! Highly recommend when it is back in town. We decided to leave Bingo Loco a little early and go upstairs for food. Food and drinks were great, especially the chicken wings. We sat at the bar and while the bartender (Olivia, i think) wasn't the most polite, she served us quickly. However, I saw Olivia use a washcloth to wipe the bottom of her shoes and then put the washcloth back on the counter. At one point, i saw her do

I'd come back here, there's plenty to do in terms of games and the staff was friendly. They have a bunch of different games in the downstairs section and it's really spacious. The car tender Christian was prompt and helpful with service. I didn't check out the upstairs yet but it looks nice. Haven't tried the food here yet either. It wasn't too far from Metro Center either

Love coming here with friends. Place can accommodate any party size. You've got board games and a bunch of other types of games downstairs. They have great pitcher beer deals for large groups. Highly recommend this place. There is plenty of street parking around this block

This place is awesome and a great bar and restaurant. Upstairs the vibe is chill with couches to lounge and spacious tables for a normal size party. Downstairs has a fun atmosphere with a dance floor, bars, standing tables, and even arcade games! The food is very good and they have very good wings!

You enter Penn Social and you think okay this is a pretty cool, spacious place, so you order a beer and get to questioning the stairs, and then you realize the place is absolutely gigantic. There's a whole other world down there, complete with skeeball and cornhole. And tremendous TVs for watching the sports.

Hosted School of Rock concert! Great facility! Nice staff! Yummy pizza!

Attended a Profs & Pints event. The topic was fascinating & the speaker was world class. I'll be back.

Great spot to gather with friends. The bar & seating upstairs are plentiful and easy to access. The rental space where I was is large and transformable to meet the event needs. The bar line was long and the bar tenders were friendly. There are water dispenser with cups at no charge and cocktails were reasonably priced. My friends said her ?? was good. You order your food via QR code at the table or at the bar. Food is cooked fresh and was tasty. Tomato ?? was a bit salty. Chips and guacamole were perfec

Stopped in with my friends for some late night drinking and dancing. The DJ was excellent, played a great mix of music. The bar service was a little slow, but the place was packed late on a Saturday night.

We've been here a dozen times or so for Professor?s and Pints and always enjoy ourselves. The food is good and the beer is cold.

Great bar with plenty of entertainment for any group large or small! With trivia, live music and more than 30 beers on draft, it's a great venue to check out alone or with a group of friends. Considering an event or happy hour with coworkers? They can accommodate!

No food only drinks and Sports on TV. It was amazing !! Wish we could have got some decent vegetarian food, we would have continued being there.

Went for a Profs and Pints - drinks were okay and the food was good.

My company had a holiday party there and the food looked good but the flavors were not good. The service was good but the atmosphere was a little off. However it is large enough to accommodate larger groups. They definitely check IDs so don't play games with them and the staff was polite. Also it was clean

Nice sports and game bar. Often has events like karaoke and has a ton of really great arcade machines like giant pac man. Downstairs is really roomy for a dc bar. Good place to hand out

I looooove Penn Social! As a non drinker, it's great to have a bar with so many fun activities ( cornhole, giant connect four, skeeball, basketball, arcade games) and great music. There's a dance floor with huge big screens that stream sports and music videos. Honey Old Bay wings are amazing, you can taste real honey! Only downside is no French fries...why??? Like why?

I had a frustrating experience with a bartender (possibly MOD) who didn't honor my $25 voucher. When I placed my first order, I showed the voucher and asked if it was still good. (Granted, I asked a little timidly because I won this voucher in 2020, right before the pandemic, and then the venue closed for a while so I thought I'd never get to use it, but then they reopened.) He jokingly said no and asked how I got it, but I light-heartedly pressed the fact that there's no expiration on it, so he said "I'll

I took my staff for a little Friday fun. We had an amazing time. James and Bullock were amazing.

Just ok. Pretty broey. Happy hour was alright from 4-7. $5 rails and $2off drafts. If I was single and 25 I'd like this place a lot more.

Hadn't seen Black Alley in some years. Im glad I did. Had a ball!

Penn Social is a great place to host an event. I went to attend a Story District event and loved the space. The bathrooms were also clean which is a huge plus in my book. If you're looking for a fun location to host an event in a metro-friendly spot in the city, check it out.

This place advertises and stays open until 3, but let's noone in after 1:30. Don't waste time walking your group down here to keep the party going, get here before 01:30 or divert to someplace like IronHorse. Just check out my pic of the bouncer stopping people from coming in at 1:43. False advertising at it's strongest.

food was alright. Get wings, I got mango habanero and it was pretty good. Do not get quesadilla. Their HH menu is good. Overall, it was ok.

Great fun witnessed by all at the annual event(Cupid's Undie Run), to raise awareness for children's tumor research. Runners braved winter weather, around scenic one mile course, included views of U. S. Capitol, Pennsylvania Avenue, and Kimpton Hotel Monaco.

Nick is an exceptional bartender who not only crafts delicious drinks but also creates an unforgettable experience. His attention to detail, friendly demeanor, and expertise behind the bar truly set him apart. Whether it's recommending the perfect cocktail or engaging guests with his charm, Nick?s passion for mixology shines through in every aspect of his service. I highly recommend him for any event or establishment looking for top-notch bartending

This place is cool. Usually pretty quiet. Their espresso martinis are really good! But it was actually really unfortunate that they were cleaning up and turned off the arcade games at 10:30 when they were supposed be closing at midnight. :/

Very cool place, we were there for a France v Australia World Cup game. The place was packed but the food didn't take much to be served, it was very tasty too. Had a couple of dark beers, and some shots, the prices are very acceptable for the quality of food, cleanliness of the place, and friendliness of the staff.

Very good wings, great bar keeps, but some of the bouncers are pressed. Bouncers need training on what situations require their attention. Also bathrooms need attention.

Tasty and affordable food, live entertainment great, atmosphere in a trendy location

The owner I'm sure knows who the tiny Asian dude is with no personality, no sense of humor and nothing to offer is.

Great, they're having an art show and it very nice! So much talent!

Chalk it up to DC prices I suppose, but I'm shocked that a 2 ounce shot of Bulleit whiskey is $33. And they won't make you a glass of ice water to go with it. And the servers are not nice. Edit: 100% know where I'm at and where I'm writing a review for. I was served from the bar, so I guess you can call them bartenders. I ordered Bulleit neat, and they asked if I wanted a double. So I asked, ?is a single like an ounce?? And the Bartender said yes. That's where the 2 ounce statement came from. Also, all

We had an evening event at Penn Social and it was amazing!!!! We cannot say enough great things about the facility and the staff. If you are looking to host an event (big or small) in DC, you should definitely check this place out! Jacalyn, the Sales & Event Manager, was awesome! She gave us great guidance on which foods to select along with quantities, and she was super friendly and helpful! The food and drinks were excellent! They have a great beer selection, and many of our guests ordered specialty

I recently had the pleasure of being served by Nic, and I must say, he is an exceptional bartender. From the moment I sat down, Nic was attentive and genuinely interested in ensuring I had a great experience. His knowledge of mixology is impressive; he crafted unique and delicious cocktails that perfectly suited my taste. What stood out most was his ability to engage with everyone at the bar, making us all feel welcome and entertained. His professionalism mixed with his friendly demeanor made the evening tr

Super fun! Came here for happy hour, and had a good time. The beer selection was okay, nothing special and not a lot of local stuff. The venue was so cool, and we didn't even realize there was a whole downstairs before leaving, so we'd definitely plan on spending more time here in the future. Don't sit at the bar during happy hour unless you'd like to be just absolutely mobbed with people in your personal space.

We ended up visiting this place on New Year's Eve as it was one of the few places that were open surprisingly. The beer selection was mediocre as it was really not much to choose from that was of any novelty. Didn't really get a chance to try the mixed drinks however when perusing through the menu there wasn't really anything that caught the eyes. The service however was on point, but we were also one of three or four tables that were actually there that evening before things really got wild. Seems like the

Came in to play $2 pool and bought drinks. The pool table isn't currently accepting dollars and the bartender only has 4 quarters. :( The DC Brau beer special was also unavailable.

Used to be incredible! One of my favorite bars. They took away the upstairs bar space, which was one of my favorite bits. The entire vibe has changed downstairs too. Missing what it was and who it had behind the counters ?? still a solid choice.

Penn Social is a massive, incredible facility. The first floor is just a light bar area with a smattering of tables. However the 'basement floor' - and I say 'floor' with a caveat because it's more like a complex - has an incredible array of table areas, bars, games, and more. The drinks are good and moderately priced. The facility is a bit dark and can get a bit crowded at typically high-traffic times but it is a really good, relaxed, spacious, fun place. I've enjoyed it over the years for everything from

We have been in contact with Penn Social for almost 2 years inquiring about hosting an event we do across the country. First, we were told that we would have to wait until the new policy was created for promoters. Since THEY considered us promoters, we couldnt just outright pay a venue rental fee. None of the 13 venues we worked with had an issue, even the Live Nation venues we inquried about. Needless to say, they sent us their new structure. Not only did we give them information about our event, we hit th

Great place to unwind and play all your childhood board games... 21+ ONLY which makes for a good round of Connect Four and Shots! Lol

Great for football! Only a few menu items but everything tastes great. All food and drink is ordered through an app linked by a QR code on your table. Simple, easy, low social contact. Edit: the staff is absolutely fantastic as well. They really make you feel welcome and genuinely seem like they want you here, which in the current social climate is a rarity in this industry.

Went to an event over the weekend and though the event was amazing, the food was not at all what I was expecting. We ordered the crab dip, crab cake sliders and two orders of wings. The wings Pier great and flavorful. The crab dip however was horrible and tasted like I was eating c straight ream cheese. Did not enjoy and was very disappointed.

Great space for big parties. Solid selection of craft beers. Bartenders were friendly & very fast

Was there on a Saturday night. Staff was very cool and nice, no problem there. Looked up arcade bar and other reviews say there were games here. There are a few games like Jenga and connect four, some ski ball and basketball hoop games. No other arcade games and there was a loud DJ downstairs.

This is a fun place to go for a beer with friends. Service at both the up and down bars is good, and beer selection includes lots of local brews. The arcade games are a special plus. Taking off a star for the funky smell downstairs due to the gross beer-soaked carpet. Still, it's not bad.

Atmosphere was great, blackberry frozen margarita was ??????. Parking garage is super close. Couple things I wish were better when having tables for a live event would be too have the tables a little more spaced out and have more finger foods on the menu. I'll definitely be back!

Fun place. Great cocktails

Solid bar, decent food, good staff. Very much enjoyed the music on the lower floor, which has a dance floor and a few nice games. I imagine it can get more lively but it was almost empty at the time. I did enjoy the music selection though.

Don't go to this place. Apart from the non-existent decoration, I order a glass of wine (served in a plastic cup, not great but that's normal it seems in the US), the bartender was absolutely mean, she attended an other client while I was paying and I gave her her machine back and went to "enjoy" my wine. She came to my table 2min later asking me to sign again, what I stupidly did, and then asked why and she said in a very rude tone that I hadn't paid the first time. I said Yes, I have paid, and she began t

A good place to watch a sporting event and eat/drink. The food is reasonably good sports-bar fare at reasonable prices. The drink prices seem to be on the high side, and mixed drinks are less than stellar (at least my wife's margarita was). TV viewing was pretty good.

My company's holiday party was held at Penn Social, and my team was thrilled. The event space was perfect, the games were fun, and the staff was outstanding. Jacalyn, the Event Manager, was truly fantastic - responsive, flexible, and attentive. Tony, the AV Tech, was knowledgeable, attentive, and managed the event professionally. I was impressed with the entire experience.

Service is terrible. I ordered a drink, and received it 30 minutes later. No apology, no discount or refund. EDIT: I think I may have overreacted in my initial (one-star) review, which was made when I was very frustrated. My perspective is still different than the management's view because I don't recall being informed about the issue, only repeatedly being told to wait. But it is true that I eventually received and finished my drink, and so not being refunded makes sense.

Awesome place to hangout. Foosball, karaoke, and corn hole what more could you want. The crowd was lively. The stay was great. I talked to a few regulars that were in attendance and was told this was the best place bar none. The first time I attended was for Google's Ingress event. It was alright. I was invited back after that and was blown away by the atmosphere and energy. I'm addicted to the ginormous sized Jenga game they have. I played pool and got beat by a hustler but was a good sport about it. The p

Excellent concept of a place. Up top you got lots of seating for you and your friends (I believe it's a restaurant?) and you can even play board games, then down stairs you've got a full out dance club with additional seating and some arcade machines. Music selection was slightly dated but I would consider it more "throwbacks" than anything else. I had A GREAT time here, will definitely return.

Great place to watch the game! Watching NBA Western Conference Final! They have an upstairs and downstairs. The downstairs is a club/game room. When it gets later, they sometimes have a DJ. Upstairs is more of a lounge. Food and drinks are pretty good. Staff is very cool! At first look, you would think it is a college spot. But is for sports fans and just a great place to chill. We frequent after Wizards games. Real cool singles to hook-up too.

They have country swing on Friday nights

Great bar selection, both liquor and beer. The downstairs area is great, with corn hole and ping-pong tables, arcades, a big screen for sports, two bars, and tons of space. I have never actually stayed in the upstairs area. Food is delicious, and service is pretty good. Can get loud and crowded with the happy hour crowd.

Visited this sports bar during happy hour. Server forgot to apply happy hour pricing, though, and had to be asked to correct the tab. Nice drinks and good pretzels.

This spot is great to hang out! I've gone several times to play some ping pong and have some drinks. The ambient is nice and the Mango frozen margarita is ridiculous, give it a try, it's amazing!

Nic was INCREDIBLE!!! He created a custom drink just for me (passion fruit mojito)! I'll be back again and again and hope to see him every time I'm here! Yall gotta stop by!

I ordered a $9 pint of beer and was handed a plastic cup marked with 12oz. When I asked the bartender, he first said ?that's a pint? (it's not), followed up with ?well that's what you get?. Can't argue with that logic.

We rented out Penn Social for a wedding weekend welcome event, and we are so glad we did! It used to be a sports bar my husband and I both really liked, but they've redone it as an event space and it was perfect for our out of town guests the night before our wedding. They were able to host our entire party with plenty of space (100-ish people), and had an open bar with everything from your basic beer, wine, and rail drinks to espresso martinis and mezcal pineapple margaritas. So many of our guests complime

One of my favorite bars in DC! They have pretty good happy hours --even on the weekend! The basement has a good amount of space for playing games or dancing. I also enjoy watching games there. I always have a great time!

Cool spot to hang out with friends have a drink and play some games. Staff was cool! Only complaint was online it said they would have the UFC fights on and when we arrived no fights. So had 2 drinks and left.

Disheveled place, not great beer selection and the moscow mule tasted like a cigarette ashes.

We had a great experience at this place on Sunday. Our bartender Jasmine Was very knowledgeable and attentive we had Prosecco on tab with fresh orange juice pot pie and couple cocktails. This place is a great relaxing for easy beverage.

Benito was amazing. Sometimes being in a new watering hole can be intimidating, but this place was different. Very welcoming and hospitality we were celebrating a special occasion and benito gave us his special house shots.....I be back soon.

Penn social is a dope spot for watching sports! The downstairs area is filled with projector size screens and the sound system is a close second to being at the game. Great place to go check it you favorite teams and meet up with friends. They have other games to play like corn hole, basketball and giant sized Jenga. Lots of choices on tap and a full bar. Great spot.

They have good food and a decent beer selection, although mostly Ales and IPAs. They have a variety of board games you can play. Had some issues with game machines not working right and still taking credits, and a pinball machine that only half works. Would recommend if you're going to watch live sports, but could use some work on the gaming side.

THE BOUNCER IS AN ASSAULTER - this weekend when we went to Penn Social, my female friend was physically grabbed by one of the male bouncers without her consent. When I went to the manager to file a complaint, he said he wasn't there so he can't do anything about it so I told him to check the cameras. We had to leave because the bouncers were so aggressive. The WORST place I have been to in DC. DO NOT GO THERE. Edited: As you see in their reply, they said they escorted her to the bathroom when she tried to r

DC Record Fair is a great annual event. Well organized, well staffed, great stock of vendors

Fun place to hangout with frnds on a weekend night... games and booze... thumbs up

Over from the UK and chose this place to watch the Superbowl; liked it so much I came back the following two nights!! Only drawback I saw was they only serve bar food (wings, chips etc), but that said, the food was excellent and really good portion sizes. Highly recommend if you're after a chilled sports bar.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s it like visiting an arcade today?

It’s a mix of nostalgia and high-energy fun! Many arcades blend retro classics like Pac-Man and pinball with modern VR games, racing simulators, and rhythm challenges — often with music, lights, and a social vibe.

Is it better to go alone or with friends?

Both can be great! Solo visits let you focus on your favorite games, while going with friends adds competition, teamwork, and laughs. Many people plan arcade meetups as a casual hangout or even date spot.

What should I bring to an arcade?

Usually just yourself and a way to pay (some arcades still use coins, others use cards or apps). If you're competitive, bring your A-game. If you're social, bring friends or meet new ones over multiplayer games.

What’s the best time to visit an arcade?

Weekdays or early afternoons are usually less crowded — perfect for focused play. Evenings and weekends bring the buzz, especially at barcades or venues with DJs, tournaments, or themed nights.

Can I meet new people at arcades?

Absolutely! Arcades attract a mix of casual players and serious gamers. Whether you're jumping into a four-player co-op or chatting between rounds, it's a fun, low-pressure way to connect over shared interests.

Are arcades still just for kids?

Not at all. While many arcades are family-friendly, there are also adult-oriented ones with full bars, 18+ nights, or vintage nostalgia themes. Arcades today cater to everyone — from first-timers to lifelong gamers.

Are there events or tournaments I can join?

Yes! Many arcades host regular competitions, retro nights, cosplay parties, and more. Whether you're into high scores or just want to watch and vibe, events add an extra layer to the experience.

What if I’m not great at arcade games?

No worries — arcades are about having fun, not being perfect. Try a variety of games, ask others for tips, and remember: the vibe is more “let’s play” than “let’s win.”
