Mine Shaft & Rock House

Mine Shaft & Rock House

Reviews Summary

The reviews present a mixed consensus. Many praise the food quality, generous portions, and friendly service, particularly highlighting homemade dishes and good pizza. However, consistent complaints include slow or inconsistent service, hit-or-miss food (especially undercooked or overcooked items), and poorly maintained bowling lanes and arcade machines. Overall, it’s a polarizing spot with strong loyalists and disappointed patrons.

This Google listing needs to be split up from the restaurant Rock House Grill and the entertainment area Mine Shaft. They do not have the same hours. The manager told me they have not updated this listing in over 12 years, so the store hours are not correct for the entertainment area. He said for the most up-to-date information go to their website. We drove well over an hour to get there and after eating was not able to do anything else. No bowling no arcade. It was very sad for our birthday guests. Th

Bob from bowling was amazing! He noticed my daughter struggling learning how to bowling. He came over, showed us his badge notifying us he is certified to teach bowling, informed us he has been teaching for over 12 years, and asked if he could help our daughter learn. He was nothing short of amazing with her! His kindness and willingness to teach shows his inspiration for bowling! She was able to learn and to get the ball down the alley! Bob, I know my husband and I thanked you before we left, but thank you

Our waitress was wonderful. Food was decent. The steak bites were my favorite thing. Cheap prices for bowling and games. Tables for seating were a little inconvenient for someone in a wheelchair. They stated that they only had one table that could accommodate which was already taken so my husband had to sit at a table that rested at his chin.

The hours here are very confusing. The automated phone system says they're open from 12?9 PM, but when we arrived at 1:30 PM, we were told bowling doesn't start until 4 PM. We came back at 4 and were finally allowed to bowl. Unfortunately, the experience didn't improve much from there. The bowling alley is very outdated ? the shoes were falling apart, the bowling balls were worn out, and the TV screens looked decades old. On top of that, the staff wasn't very friendly. No one said ?have a good night? when

Came in with the boys and my fiance, the rockhpuse did not disappoint in The slightest with large portions, hearty selection and mouth smacking flavor from meal to meal. Pack and to go if you must but you are missing out on the dine-in experience of the mineshaft combo featuring several fun arcade like games and a bowling alley to rack up points after stuffing your faces at the rockhouse.

Amazing food, huge portions, and reasonably priced! I don't like that the only entrance is shared with The Mine Shaft so if you're bringing kids it's like walking into a casino with flashing lights and prize area.

Very surprised how much we liked the pizza! Ordered a 16? thin crust, veggie pizza, and added ham and fresh mozzarella cheese. The pizza was at least 20?, full of toppings, crispy crust, perfect pizza sauce. We were stuffed, puffed, and had to take home half of the 16? pizza. For two of us, the 10? pizza would have been plenty. With the additional toppings, pizza came to $27. Best pizza we've had in Houghton! (And we are pizza snobs)

Never had a bad meal or bad service. Everyone is always friendly and fast. Food is delicious and bartenders are on point.

Went there to enjoy graduation of my friend. Ate in rock house. Their food item is good. But they need to use less salt in their bread and meats. It was super salty for the couples of items. Rather than putting too much onions it is better to add some other stuff in the sandwiches. A grilled pepper (serrano or jalapeno) would be great as sides or inside the sandwiches. The washroom was not matching to the environment. You can have your food delivered to the bowling area. The bowling area is also kind of old

Build your own burger, was delicious. Cheddar cheese with grilled onions. Definitely stop back next time we are in the area!

First of all, we do like going here. This rating is just for our last time here. The sign says to wait to be seated but there was no sign of the hostess and we stood waiting for about six minutes before she came back. During our meal we watched this happen several times to other incoming guests. In all of these instances, there were many other workers walking by but nobody communicating that someone will be right with you, etc. After paying for our meal, our waitress actually brought back our change and it

We had a large group at the Rock House and Casana didn't miss a beat, great food and great service

Great place for family and friends to have some fun.

Kids loved it here. Delicious pizza, loaded with toppings. Arcade, bowling, virtual golf, batting cages, hockey shoot out, mini golf in the summer.

Would recommend not being rude to customers even if you are having a bad day.

I had a salad very good. Husband had a thin crust pizza and it was great. I've had hand toss in the past and was soggy

Amazing food . Great atmosphere and service! ??

Incredible experience, exceptional customer service, and phenomenal family-friendly pricing! Food was quality and tasted amazing with generous portions and multiple allergy-friendly accommodations! The whole family had a blast with 18 holes of mini golf at a great unbeatably low price! We also enjoyed bowling for a generous hour of family fun at another great deal! The staff were very friendly and deserve high praise for their delivery, quality, and timeliness of service. Thank you to Jake and the rest of t

Our server, Cayley seemed to be new bit did an excellent job! The food was all delicious!

Food was pretty good. Despite a burger that was undercooked, it was an overall good experience thanks to the server. They genuinely sounded like they would try to do better with cooking more evenly. I hope they figure out what's going on.

The menu hasn't been updated online since before Covid according to our server, which was very disappointing. The food was good, but very overpriced. Especially the steak special. The server was nice but needs to smile more and act like she enjoyed our patronage. Wouldn't stop here again.

Food was fair but waitress had to many tables. Priced like a Chili's franchise. Great steak soup. Clean sports bar atmosphere. Did not check out game side.

Good atmosphere, poor food. I stopped for a bite here while staying in town for work. The drinks were very reasonable, but the good was very uninteresting. I had a hot beef sandwich, and I don't think one thing on my plate was actually made in house. Bland meat, packaged gravy, and pre-made mashed potatoes. My coworker had a burrito and it was just as boring and pre-packaged. The server and bartender were attentive, and the bar was neat. The beer selection was very nice, and the prices for drinks were ver

Sports bar mixed with gaming opportunities. Gaming area is separate from the dining area so the noise does not mix. We visited on a Thursday evening. Location was not busy and was well staffed. Food came out in an appropriate amount of time.

Loved the local distilled whiskies they had to offer for a whisky flight. The fish and chips were quite good. If anything, the batter could use a bit more flavor but cooked properly and super tender, and the tarter sauce was good as well. I doubt the tarter sauce is made here, but it's good for the fish pallet. My wife's steak came out fat, happy, and THICK. She loved it. Mom in-law got sweet potato fries and the same fish I did and she agrees the batter could have used some more flavor and she has a milk a

Amaizing! Not saying that I wasn't expecting good food, but I was thrilled with how amaizing everything was. Everything was made to perfection! Delicious! Hope to come back sometime soon.

The food and the waitress were incredible. The one star is because of the blond female bartender working tonight at 6 pm. ( 1 / 20 / 2024 ). A manager worth any grain of salt would know exactly who I am talking about. She was the most rude and unprofessional person I have ever encountered at a bar. There is no way that asking for a beer should cause someone to get an attitude problem towards a customer. If she is upset about the tip afterward, then that is too bad. A tip for anyone approaching this lady, g

Affordable/value. Great service. Good food. Fast & efficient. All three of us enjoyed our dinners.

The food is excellent. Service was great. Open .spacious and friendly environment

We had a blast playing mini golf (a cheap, fun course) and an hour of bowling as a family. The food at the restaurant was great and Jake, who helped us with everything, made this the best family stop of the day!

I go here all the time and the staff is great. The food is almost always great too. I'm making this review specifically because of the spicy penne I had last time. I would give this place 4 stars but the pasta was that bad. It was noodles in milk soup. I had to take it home and finish cooking it. I'm 9 months pregnant and I went home HANGRY. Make a penne rosa or make a white milk soup, there is no in-between.

Bland, bland, bland! Not the best place I've eaten. Service was ok. Didn't ask to go refill our drinks or how the food was but she was nice. The atmosphere? What atmosphere? It was a ware house of a building. The food - so bland. Marinated chicken that they must have forgotten to marinate. Grilled? No, not really. I had the Tuscan salad which seemed interesting. The pesto had no flavor. Not a whiff of garlic or salt. Very disappointing. If you bland food this the place.

Dinner was amazing! Everything tasted fresh, and made from scratch. The food was incredible, with huge portions, and the service was top-notch!

It was average. The putt putt was ridiculous and fun at the same time, I'm not even sure how that's possible. Our Server, Erin, was great! We had a problem with one of our dishes, she handled it fantastically.

They serve a great Ceasar salad.

Cool place but the food and service is always hit-and-miss, especially when you're bowling. The pizza is not good.

Great service! Yummy food! Nice thick cut bacon and amazing French fries. Good pricing.

We went in to celebrate my daughter's birthday. The basketball game was broken, along with a few others, but there were still plenty of games to keep them busy. $20 for each kid lasted 2 hours, which was perfect because they were ready to eat. I ordered pizza at the Rockhouse. They seemed understaffed. It was a 10 minute wait waiting to speak to a hostess, then 20 minutes to be seated. The waitress took my order right away, the pizza was served promptly. It was not as tasty as Irene's but nothing compares t

Here is a photo of the food and drinks we never got after being seated and waiting 25 minutes and not being visited by a single wait person. Please note that this a management problem, not an individual server in issue. The place is packed on a Friday night and one waitress actually had a shirt that said "be patient there are only three of us." I'm sure that seems funny, but 20 minutes in with zero staff (not even eye contact) and after revisiting the hostess, it lost it's amusement value quickly. Come on m

The food here isn't what I'm here to write about but the arcade is. I understand that machines break and sometimes the only people that can work on them are the contractors whom they have contracts with or whatever! BUT, when there are 8-10 machines out of order it's not even an arcade anymore. People bring their kids here sometimes just to play at the arcade. Atleast put some out of order signs up. This place has gone downhill. Please fix your machines.

No complaints about the staff, they are doing their best. Bowling alley barely works. Does not reset pins, half the lanes are open (hour plus wait), does not return bowling balls, alley upholstery is coming up. Etc. Etc. Just not a fun experience.

Was part of a large group and we had been very excited to eat here with reservations made many months ago before our trip. We were given 2 servers for our entire large party. One of which was a very confused girl who never once bothered to get me or anyone near me a refill. My wife's meal was given to the 3rd table somehow and she had to watch everyone else eat for nearly 10 minutes. The first large table got their food and we hadn't even ordered our food yet. The 3rd large table got the worst of it and go

Our waitress, second day on the job was "green". I didn't mind the fact of asking for a small take out box a few times. What I did mind was when a large hot pizza pan was set right in front of 2 young girls in place of their plates, it could have been disaster. Luckily that didn't happen after we immediately spoke up. Common sense was lacking, I don't think she even realized what she did! Which is why I think training should be mandatory for newbies, otherwise someone may get hurt. One a good note the food

Way better than I expected - just because I think this is more of a destination that serves food than a foodie spot. Had a wrap with chicken fingers, cheese and bacon, asked for them to go light on the lettuce and they did. Fries were excellent. Daughter?s boneless wings were decent - she likened them to chicken nuggets with sauce - but that's kinda what they are anyway. Not a foodie/delicious gourmet kind of recommendation, but a solid bit of grub that tailors the order as requested.

the bartender couldn't have been more unwelcoming. our team wanted to simply sit at different tables because we were coming at separate times and she freaked out and said we must sit at this table that sits 12; also while stating we couldn't get out of our ?clicks?. why is bro making fun of teenage girls?? she also said if people are coming later they must order pizza. at no place of business do you hear of the staff telling costumers what to order? terrible service. my chicken tenders were dry as hell not

We waited 2 hours to bowl after they told us it was a 30-45 minute wait. We watched multiple groups that showed up after us get to bowl first and when we asked about going they said they needed to clean the shoes. The boy behind the counter had horrible service.

Let me start this review by saying that I used to love this place. When it reopened about 3 years ago, they opened with fantastic food and service, at a reasonable price. The owners changed, within the last few months, I believe. Since the new owners have taken over, prices have remained the same while service has deteriorated, and many of the menu items have been removed. Their food is now lackluster at best; they still have a decent burger, but that's about the best thing on the menu anymore. They used to

Server was great and my burger was great but my fiance's steak was over cooked the first time and then the second one was microwaved and raw on half and rubber on the other half... ?? Definitely not making the mistake of ordering steak from here again. But if you want a good burger and are out bowling it's a good spot.

First restaurant up here and it was a great experience. Food was great and service was nice. Seems like a great place to go, and prices weren't absurd. Definitely recommended.

Chicken strips were cooked in old, dirty grease and were OVER cooked. The other food ordered was good. Service was good, atmosphere was amazing.

Went there three times on a recent trip, twice for dinner and once for lunch. The menu is basically standard American fare or expanded bar menu type items. Service was very good, food quality ranged from good to excellent. Read the menu very carefully to be sure what you're ordering as they do a few things differently. I would go back and would choose this over most of the chains in town.

We only went here because we had coupons given to us from our hotel. Food was okay at best, very greasy. Marinara sauce was awful. Burger was underdone, only had a few bites. Waitress did a good job though.

Lots of fun for our large family. We paid for the lanes by the hour 2 hours, 2 lanes, 12 people, still less than taking everyone to the movies. There are plenty of food options to have delivered to your lanes. The pizza crust is chewy and overall yummy. Good service. They came to check on us.

We were seated and a hostess brought us our water and Sprite and no server ever came to our table. We sat and waited for 20 minutes and I asked for a server twice yet nothing. So we left. Not coming back again soon. I have enjoyed the food in previous visits but can't enjoy the food if I can't get any service.

Amazing food. If you are in the Houghton area and want a mouth watering burger, go here and get the the rock house burger. However, our waitress didn't give us the whole of her attention. She did come and check up on us during the meal, but when we were done we waited about 15 mins for her to bring the check. Once she brought it she disappeared again so we just went to the bad to pay. Still worth it though for the great food!

Had the BBQ combo, sorry guys but way overcooked. Ribs were dry and half the chicken breast too. Wasn't worth the money. The waiter just smiled and said he had another overcooked complaint. And said that it must be the night for overcooked food. Took his tip and we left. 3 stars are generous. The sweet potato fries were good.

My husband and I went here for our anniversary. The slightly busy restraunt was asking for names. We put ours in with the hostess and sat. She gave us a 20 minute wait time. We watched several people go in after our wait time was up. We assumed that they had called ahead. As we sat waiting with no one in the waiting area I noticed the hostess walking around. We were sitting straight across from her desk. She finally came to us and asked if we were waiting to be seated. We had waited about 40 minutes. The re

Real nice place. Took my son and his girlfriend there. She had Alfredo noodles, he had burger and fries, I had Reuben and slaw. Food was good, wait staff was great. I will definitely stop again when I'm in town.

Yes. Very tasty food! They have a wide array of menu items. I always enjoy this place. Once you're done eating you can bowl, or play arcade games. My children have had several birthday parties at the adjoining ?Mineshaft,? bowling alley/arcade. Kids love this place. Friendly staff. Very good food! Compliments to the chef!! ??

Great servers excellent food

Great time, food was good. Service was quick and the waitress was friendly. It was Saturday, so we opted to do some good bowling for an hour. Kyle at the front desk was more than helpful on setting us up. The rest of the staff was outgoing and friendly as well. Good experience and environment. Great for kids and adults. If you're from outta town, must check it out in down time.

We stopped on 5/19 to celebrate a birthday. Our waitress was great. I was able to sneak a candle to her and she brought it out in our dessert. Food was good and the arcade was fun

I think we would have been better off and saved some money had we gone to a gas station with food. Nachos appetizer had overcooked beef, my cobb salad was lackluster, and my husband's build a burger was undercooked with onion tanglers on top - when he asked for fried onions, and no sign of lettuce. The service was inattentive at best. We definitely will not be back.

Our thin crust and hand tossed specialty pizzas were delicious. We had great service. And the dining/bar area and bathrooms were very clean. We would definitely eat at the Rock House Grill & Tavern again.

Needed a meal at 9:10 pm after long day on road. Stayed at hotel next door. Was incredibly surprised at the "made from scratch" veggie pizza and dinner salad with home made dressing and awesome fresh veggies. Total quality meal at place I would not have expected.

We have been here a few times and will probably go back because my husband likes the roadhouse burger but beyond that, nothing spectacular food wise. The server we had last time was excellent. He has obviously been there a while and knows what he is doing. Food was good but not memorable / remarkable for most of us. We did not go to the games side because it didn't seem like a lot of fun for us with two little ones. It seems to just be bowling with a couple of arcade games. Nothing too fancy.

The food came out somewhat notably slower than expected, but the place is very roomy and well-lit. Good atmosphere, that's for sure! Plus, the food is actually quite good. The staff was friendly and sorta relaxed, but with an air of urgency, so that's nice. The prices are also notably higher than average, but not devastating. My only real problem with the place lies with its other available activities. The arcade is just about as boring as possible, and its prizes are very unsatisfying. Go purely for a lo

We usually visit here often and its generally okay, its a little slow to get our food. However, last time we went we ended up throwing some money on the table for our drinks and we left. We had our three children there and were hoping to take them next door to the arcade after dinner. It was a Friday night and was pretty busy and we are reasonable people, but we waited for 15 minutes before our waitress came to get our drink order and we waited an hour and a half and never received our food or an explanatio

The only pleasing aspect of my first, and definitely last, to this restaurant was the decor. The food was a massive disappointment. I ordered a sandwich which included BLT and cheese, and all I received was the bacon. My friend ordered a burger and requested it medium, but what she got was an over cooked patty on a hard bun. The waitress admitted our order had been sitting for awhile under the heat lamps. We sat there for an hour waiting for our food, and when we got it, our fries were forgotten as well! Af

Fries were good (both regular and sweet potato!), Good, cheap beer selection on draft. Food wasn't awe inspiring (we got burgers and cheese curds), but still a solid place.

Pizza was great! Sauce tasted fresh and crust was light and airy. Atmosphere is fun! Our server Briza was attentive and polite. Definitely will return when back on the area.

Waited 10min to bowl and no one helped me and gf that was out for a random dinner and game night. Everything looks like fun but service garbage. Worst experience in town

Bowling is fine. Things don't work perfectly, but it's fine. Staff is very rude and off-putting, however. Anytime you ask for help, it seems to be met with annoyance. Also, don't show up Wednesday. It says it's open, but it isn't. They'll rudely send you on your way out the door, though haha

Steak was tasteless and baked potatoes were way overbaked! Service was slow as molasses! It took forever for anything to come to the table. I hate to give a bad review, but not worth the $70 that we spent. Not planning on going again to eat.

Food is little pricey, but good. I could only get two beers, because my waiter insisted on bringing me the bill. He did say "No rush, whenever you're ready." I told him i wanted to stay and watch the game. When I looked at the check, My waiter overcharged me for the beers. I showed him on the menu, each beer should've cost $2 not $3= $6.00. He went to go fix it. When he brought back the new bill, he charge me $2.50 for each beer, totalled at $5.00. He still got it wrong! So that's all I gave him for a tip,

My burger was alright, my husband had the chicken and it was rubber and overnuked veggies. . Our waitress was awful. She was like the Houdini of waitresses. We saw her to take our order, drop food and drinks off and to leave the check. We were up for our anniversary and decided to split the lava cake. Huge mistake. It was a heavy brick of what tasted like boxed brownies. The whole pleasure of the lava cake is to see the gooey mess of chocolate ooze out... nope..solid mass of foodstuff. We would have compl

We recently had my daughters 5th birthday party here. There was a small mix up but they fixed very quickly and everything was good after that. The party was fun for everyone and they took care of everything for us which meant less stress for me and I was able to enjoy my daughters birthday more. Definitely will be having more birthday party's in the future and would recommend this to others. I suggest you book your party well in advance though. Kathy the party planner was great. The waitress was great even

Ordered a New York Strip and it was so fatty it was not eatable. Sent it back and got another one of extremely poor quality. They sat us and then forgot about us. We had to flag someone down to take our order. The Nachos and fries were good but everything else was extremely poor down to the pop being flat. Would never go there again.

Good service and lots of food options, we really enjoyed our appetizers but generally felt their food was very over-salted. The drinks were great and reasonably priced!

Had brought a large group of 30 people here for an event I was hosting. Had called and made an RSVP and reserved one of their banquet rooms to make sure they were prepared ahead of time. Unfortunately, it seems they were still ill prepared. Seemed like 1 or 2 wait staff serving the entire place meaning long wait times for food and drinks/ refills. When they brought the food out, they were unsure who ordered it and giving it to some who didnt order because of the confusion. Some people didnt even get their

Terrible food, service, and experience. This was a good place to go to a few years ago, but now will leave you in search elsewhere of edible food. We were in town for the Rally this past weekend and decided to go here since it had been a few years. Their tap list said for seasonal beers to ask your server. I asked server and there was silence and she said uh, sam adams, maybe the october one and she made no offer to even check. I just ordered water. Food took about 45 mins to come out to table. For dinner,

Super fast service. Food was delicious. Got the pulled pork sandwich with French fries. Portion size was huge. Could have been smaller in my opinion, but at least you get your money's worth.

Dined there Monday New Year's Eve.... Have eaten there many times in the past... Grandson bowled there for a few years... Service was a little slow but not her fault, only 1 waitress and 1 bar tender.... Sat in back section behind the bar.... There were 9 TV.s on and 8 were playing MICHIGAN Tech. Hockey. The one above my head was playing MICHIGAN State Football.... Bar tender came up and turned it to the Hockey game being played by 8 other TV's .... She never said a word, would think she could see I was wat

Well, yesterday's service was appalling! Traveled 2 hours and this was a planned stop in our daily itinerary. I had been there about 4 years ago and found it to be a fun place. Upon arrival we ordered kids meals for the 2 children and went to the arcade area to stretch legs and get active. About half of the games did not work properly so we decided to go back for food. Received appetizers and then pizza. Asked waitress why kids meals were taking so long and was told the meat was bad, but it was getting cor

Great little recreational center with bowling, mini golf and arcade games. Cutest little bowling alley.

My favorite place in Houghton to eat! Great homemade food, full bar & friendly service. Kids can go play in the game room after dinner. Games are limited but there are no other choices around town. Pizza is an excellent choice too.

I made it a point to avoid the Rock House for over two years because I regarded it as an Applebees mimic and therefore not worth my patronage. Earlier this evening, not being able to decide on a dinner plan, I, perhaps half-heartedly, reexamined the Rock House online menu as a kind of last resort. To my surprise, not only was the menu expansive, it was filled with options which sounded delicious. I made the decision to eat at the Rock House, if only to be adventurous and to try something new. Meal quality b

Great people but service can be a little slow and lanes tend to mess up often. I think what really helps them earn these stars is the tavern next door. Great deals on drinks and awesome place to just chill with friends. Btw bear long island I've ever had.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s it like visiting an arcade today?

It’s a mix of nostalgia and high-energy fun! Many arcades blend retro classics like Pac-Man and pinball with modern VR games, racing simulators, and rhythm challenges — often with music, lights, and a social vibe.

Is it better to go alone or with friends?

Both can be great! Solo visits let you focus on your favorite games, while going with friends adds competition, teamwork, and laughs. Many people plan arcade meetups as a casual hangout or even date spot.

What should I bring to an arcade?

Usually just yourself and a way to pay (some arcades still use coins, others use cards or apps). If you're competitive, bring your A-game. If you're social, bring friends or meet new ones over multiplayer games.

What’s the best time to visit an arcade?

Weekdays or early afternoons are usually less crowded — perfect for focused play. Evenings and weekends bring the buzz, especially at barcades or venues with DJs, tournaments, or themed nights.

Can I meet new people at arcades?

Absolutely! Arcades attract a mix of casual players and serious gamers. Whether you're jumping into a four-player co-op or chatting between rounds, it's a fun, low-pressure way to connect over shared interests.

Are arcades still just for kids?

Not at all. While many arcades are family-friendly, there are also adult-oriented ones with full bars, 18+ nights, or vintage nostalgia themes. Arcades today cater to everyone — from first-timers to lifelong gamers.

Are there events or tournaments I can join?

Yes! Many arcades host regular competitions, retro nights, cosplay parties, and more. Whether you're into high scores or just want to watch and vibe, events add an extra layer to the experience.

What if I’m not great at arcade games?

No worries — arcades are about having fun, not being perfect. Try a variety of games, ask others for tips, and remember: the vibe is more “let’s play” than “let’s win.”

Why are arcade prize games so exciting to play?

Arcade prize games are a thrilling highlight in 2025! Claw machines, skee-ball, and ticket-redemption games like basketball offer a rush of skill and chance, with rewards like plushies, toys, or electronics up for grabs. Modern machines feature vibrant lights, digital scoreboards, and responsive controls, amplifying the fun. The lively arcade atmosphere, with cheering crowds and buzzing energy, makes every win feel epic.
