Customer Reviews

Great local place to support for buying video games. Loved the arcade machine, but seemed a bit crowded to walk around in that section. Otherwise great local space

This place is great! Awesome selection of retro games at super affordable prices. The staff is also very knowledgeable and happy to help you find what you need. I had the pleasure of talking to Eric who helped me find replacement parts for my Gameboy Advance. He not only helped me find exactly what I was looking for, but also gave me a great deal. I highly recommend this place if you're in the market for retro games/systems. I will definitely be back!

So I went to game underground for the first time since it's location on route nine in Framingham over 12 years ago I'm really proud that Jamie kept this place and now has a third location. I went there and purchased a super Nintendo system HD so I can play with my son the customer service was really friendly. This kind of shit makes me happy.

FUNNNNNNN the games here are cute as hell and pretty much impossible to find anywhere else in the area so !!!! Also pretty great price-wise. I haven't contributed much to the community but it seems tight-knit yet welcoming. A huge recommend !!

This place was so fun! Not super expensive to play the games and they have older nintendo games to play for free on tvs as well. Me and my husband had a great time playing King of Fighters :) also tons of music rhythm games to choose from that you could tell had people be frequent customers! Also it's really close to a lot of asian restaurants to try after you finish playing games.

I came in with a stack of games not trash three of the games in the range of 80.00 to 100.00 one game generally for 150.00 .was not expecting to get full value but I could not believe what they offered under hundred. Also the person doing the trade picked up one of my items went over to some people I don't know what he was saying but it's kind of unprofessional at that point he did not even give me a price. Very unprofessional. Also one of the people that works there the one with black hair and glasses giv

Excellent arcade. I like the fact that you swipe a game card and don't need to use quarters to play pinball. Excellent pinball machines and kept in great shape by the famous Boston based our Lady of Pinball company. Great shop, run well, clean, friendly staff easy parking off of Moody Street.

Awesome place with lots of great arcade games. The staff care about your fun and they're super helpful and there's plenty of variety in both classic and new games. Totally worth bringing a group of people with you to have fun. Bring money so you can get tokens.

If I could do less than one star, I would. This place is a scam. Low balled me with $30 with over $200 worth of games. The arcade also is dirty and they never clean the machines. You can tell because they smell. There is also no air conditioning. The staff is rude and you should only go there if you want to give yourself the worst experience of your life. As a woman as well, I would not suggest going here.

Had a great time attending the Smash Tournament. Tons of talented gamers and fun people to meet and play against/with. Any and everyone is welcomed-- this was my first and felt right at home. Definitely give this places tournaments a try

A rhythm gamer's paradise! Been wanting to finally come here for many years, but my luck always stopped me on my tracks last minute everytime, even when they were still in Natick. Now I come here at least twice a week ever since I finally dedicated to this place a month ago.

A formidable arcade with timeless amenities like pinball, free throw games, and skee-ball. But the heart of the venue is a rhythm game heaven, with a side of used game store (classic and new alike), and from the looks of it ample room in the back for gaming tournaments. I can't give this spot higher praise. This is how you create a community center and hub of arcade gaming culture. In the 2024, 2 decades on from the death of the arcade this is a true bastion of that world. Support it, defend it, preserve it

Great spot, lots of fun with a variety of games! Good space for parties and events. Also has a solid selection of vintage games

amazing deals 10/10 Jamie is awesome!!!

Good selection of used games for decent prices, plus a nice array of arcade games to spend time playing while visiting! They give you a dedicated store card for credits that you can refill whenever you want which is very nice. They work hard to create a fun atmosphere for their customers.

A wholesome welcoming place for gamers of all types, there was a young kid playing fortnite, a group of high schoolers playing arcade games, a dad playing wack-a-mole with his 2 year old daughter, and a few others enjoying the older classic games. There is a mixture of arcade games, console games, and card games. There is Friday night Magic the Gathering with a few great players. The facilities are a little tired and in need of a good windexing, but this was such a good community of people, it was easy to o

I am a mom and took my 12-year-old and nine-year-old here. I loved the old school arcade vibes with a nice mix of pinball, vintage arcade, and Japanese rhythm games. Not air conditioned and not food, but you can wander out to any of the many stores or restaurants if you are hungry. I think one of my kids was disappointed that it wasn't more of a Dave and Busters but the other one was totally into it. Will go back.

It was a little stuffy in the space. The gaming collection they have is impressive and I'd recommend anyone who is into old school arcade machines to check it out!

My favorite get away. Very affordable and people are very friendly. There are also some tournaments as well.

Great arcade for rhythm games, most of the games were in good condition. Would be cool if they had taiko and sound voltex though.

Super knowledgeable owner, awesome support of local gaming community with the rear event space and cool collection of arcade cabs.

so many arcades have come and went, but Game Underground has led the charge in hosting events and tournaments for well over 10 years. Check out the used games while taking a break from all the fun at the arcade!! I love this place and I only wish I could make it up there more often.

Literally love this place as a rhythm gamer. Friendly staff and great selection of rhythm games! The only reason it's not 5 stars is because it's bathrooms are really gross. It'd be a much more welcoming space for women if the bathrooms were regularly cleaned and just made nicer overall.

You know how some folk say 'Only '90's kids will remember'? Well, if you /do/ remember, you'll get a nostalgic kick; if you don't, then this is the next best thing to time travel. From outside, you can watch through the windows as people engage with flashy games of impeccable reflex...which may entice you in. It's...a 'cozy' atmosphere, as they have packed every available inch with a wide variety of games. Do you feel rhythm? You got it. Do you want to swing back to the '80's and wiggle a joystick and mash

Cool store, really glad I decided to make the trip. I was able to get a collector's item console for a reasonable price in great shape and tested by the store. Staff was very helpful and friendly. Lots of cool retro and newer games, some nice arcade machines, and a good setup for tabletop and card games.

Best game store in New England! And if you like music/rhythm games, you'll be in heaven! Many Japanese music games that are almost unique to the US with only a single digit number of machines in the country, this is one of a very few places you'll be able to play them. Staff is friendly, knowledgable and awesome!

Good place to locally buy used games, and get some gaming hardware like consoles or even retro controllers and consoles. Also a great local place to buy trading cards like Pok?mon or magic the gathering. They also have an arcade with a dozen or more games, it's a bit limited and majority lean towards rhythm games, so if that isn't your thing, maybe look for other arcades. They also hold tournaments and events for smash bros and mtg and others. Friendly staff.

Probably the only place in East Mass that you'll find working Rhythm game machines. Prices are decent, and the atmosphere is very enjoyable

It's really fun. I love all the rhythm games

This place use to incredible, but it has gone down hill. I got a nes for went to play it tried 10 different games none worked. Brought it back to swap it out. It says new replacement pins on the Nes. So bring it home and it took a couple minutes but it worked then the picture got completely messed up. I called them and they said we fixed the pins. I explained this is the second console I got from them and it didn't work more then 15 minutes. They then told me the console is old and eventually it would work

Great place to play competitive tournaments with friendly staff and gamers. Lots of cool retro games and imports!

I came here to play with a group of my friends only to be greeted with an AMAZING selection of games. It was almost overwhelming how many good options there were. The staff are very sweet, and also helped me buy a game as well! My only complaint is that the place itself looks dirty, like as if someone hasn't mopped or whipped the tables down in a bit.

I really love this place! I come here usually every other weekend, the prices are amazing, all the arcade machines are in amazing conditions, and there's a great community there as well, I really like the custom-drawn covers for some of the games in the game store section, some are really funny, seriously I spend $20 on coins (which is 100) and still have half of them left after 2 hours, although I do have only 2 flaws here, and one of them is really small, and the other is just small, the small one is the

The arcade and the store are both amazing. I've been coming here for years for a variety of things, from playing dance games, to buying used console cartridges, to group gatherings and tournaments, and it's just the best. The vibe here makes you feel right at home. Waltham is lucky to have this gem.

I'm glad this place exists and it's nice to have so many unique rhythm games under one roof. But boy, I can't hear half of these games which is probably why I don't come back here much. It's not so bad for the ones with headphone input but for the dance games it's pretty rough. Also, it was a little confusing because most of the games were on free play since you can pay a flat rate for the day, but I just bought a cup full of tokens. So I just put like 4 into each game before I played. Not sure if that was

An excellent game store and arcade! They have a great selection of retro games, everything from NES to PS5, and all the games are very fairly priced. The employees are all nice and are passionate about video games. If you are ever in the area, be sure to check Games Underground out; you won't be disappointed.

Lots of games. Nice place. Need more pinball machines. Only 3 and $1.50 a 3 ball game, although if you lose the ball quickly, it gives you another.

Bad trade in gave the guy over 400 in cards and ripped me off

I love coming here because they have a few Japanese rhythm games from their arcades. Some of the games that have matching systems are networked together so you can play with a friend. They have a good variety of used games as well, the most GameCube games I've seen on a shelf in a long time. It could use some work though, like some fresh paint or better lighting. It kinda feels like a bummer being here when they want you to have fun.

Fantastic staff! Always friendly and helpful. They had a surprising number of imported arcade games which is a rarity in most states and their trade in values for games are better than most (You can even trade in games for arcade credit which for me, is a win win.) Great place to hang out and meet new friends. If I lived closer, this place would consume a fair portion of my paychecks. Can't wait to visit again!

Stopped here last December when I was in town. Good selection of games and a fun atmosphere. Really glad I found it and took the time. Parking in the immediate area can be a bit tricky but it's worth a stop and a must for me when I'm back in Boston.

Lots of rhythm games and home to a really neat old virtual on cabinet. They also sell older games at very reasonable prices. A few days after the new year I even got a 3ds streetpass here! very cool

An amazing independent arcade that has the best of everything. A great variety of games (including hard to find games imported from Japan) that gets updated regularly; gaming tournaments for like Mario kart etc; and used games and various new and retro consoles for sale. The owners are so nice and friendly and since covid the layout and everything else is updated for safety. Please go you'll love it ??????

Fun games, a little expensive, but great!!

Bought a few games from Jamie the owner today, super nice guy very helpful. Definitely will be back as I am getting back into an old hobby and needed a point in the right direction. Highly recomend this place.

Kind of shocked to see there were negative reviews of GU, so I thought I'd chip in a good one - this store is a colossal part of my community. I've met close friends at the Commander FNMs, spent hours poring over their binders and bulk, and on the rare instance where I'm looking to pick up a video game, they always have it at a reasonable price. Incredibly grateful to have them within walking distance of me - I hope for their continued success.

First time visit here. I'm definitely a retro game lover and their selection is widespread and worth a look. I will definitely be back to shop again as well as recommend this place to my family and friends without hesitation. If you get a chance to stop in you should do so. I also heard they do birthday parties, I'm going to get more information from them on that. I think that would be a great alternative for a birthday no matter what age! Thank you James and Eric for such a pleasant visit. It was nice spea

Great customer service. Unfortunately, a good amount of the games weren't on, and a number of ones that were on took our tokens without being able to play. Only one game was issuing tickets, and after a few times pf playing it also stopped working. Place has promise once things are up and running correctly.

Wonderful independent arcade and game store! Went here for the first time today and had a blast. It is small, so don't come expecting something like Funspot - but they do have a good variety of arcade games, from ticket-giving games like skeeball to Crazy Taxi, DDR, and several cool Japanese imports. They have a more interesting selection of games and systems for sale than any gamestop I've been in - including some rarer ones. I'd love to return after covid when some more systems are up and running. The sta

Great arcade, the highlight of my trip to Boston. Rhythm game cabs are good quality. 1 credit Premium Time on both Sound Voltex and IIDX. Perma long line for the maimai lol

I love this place! I just wish they had more arcade games, but not to shabby. I always have a great time here. The employees are very cheerful and helpful. Great selection of retro games and consoles for reasonable prices. It is totally with checking out just for the arcade games.

Great place which reminds me of the arcades in the old country. The only problem I've had so far is the condition of the sound voltex machines. Some of the buttons have problems in the plungers where the button will not be able to be pressed all the down. The knobs are also in need of lubrication. Other than that all of music game machines which were on during my visit played well without any problems.

Awesome little retro video game store/arcade staff was very friendly. Not all of the arcade machines worked but most of them did and they seem to do a pretty half decent job maintaining some of them considering how old some of them seem to be. As far as like home console video games more, they have a decent selection of a games though there could definitely be more... some of the game cases have these stupidly funny little doodles on the cover. Good selection of old games bought a sega genesis game and they

August 15 2024 rhythm games: 1 chunithm 2 maimai 2 sound voltex (one of them was out of order) 1 museca 1 jubeat 1 popnmusic 1 drum mania (was out of order) 1 groove coaster 1 ddr 1 smx 1 2dx 1 ongeki might be some i missed as i wrote this the day after

The staff are really nice and the space to play is large enough for most crowds. It can get loud from all the arcade games. My friends and I have attended Magic events here a number of times and will continue to go here.

Checked out the place after hearing it moved. The selection of classic games the old place seemed bigger. There seems to be less of a smell and creep factor with the new location now that it is in the mall. There's a bunch of cool arcade machines in the front and a half-baked ticket redemption area. Didn't go during gaming hours so I have no experience with how tournaments are held.

Great arcade and gaming location, the owner is one of the most down to earth and nicest people ever. Vast selection of rythmn games that are well maintained and updated on a regular! Would highly recommend when around moody

Japanese rhythm game heaven, has cabs you won't see anywhere else outside of a yearly convention, such as ONGEKI, Reflec Beat, and Stepmania. The cabs have custom servers which let you save progress on them and the price is good as well. A cozy place and the staff and owner are very kind as well!

I loved going here with my husband Rory???? Jamie and his crew are like family to us!! Super honest and helpful employees, and a great selection of games to play (though I do miss the Nostalgia cabinet!)

I had a great time here! The game variety wasn't what I expected, but we still found plenty of fun games to play. Next time I'd like to do Rockband for sure. I was kind of expecting it to feel a little more "new" inside. When you go in for the first time it's kind of confusing. However, the staff was friendly and I definitely plan on going back.

If you go in with the mindset it's an arcade that sells some games, you'll do a lot better than thinking it's a game store that has some arcade machines. This may be the only place in New England where you can play all of the Bemani machines in one spot. I gave it three stars only because some of the machines were down but for someone who loves Japanese arcades, this place is a historical building.

I love this store. I used to visit this place for the arcade back when it was in the Framingham mall and always had a blast. Their move to Waltham only made it better. Their selection of games is great, and includes rare titles that are hard to find. If you're a collector, Game Underground is a great place to check regularly to fill out your collection or to find replacement parts for retro systems. If you're an arcade fan, you won't be disappointed with the selection of cabinets. Several rare cabinet

This is a wonderful video game place. They have a bunch of arcade games, as well as space to play console games. The atmosphere is like the electronic version of a local gaming shop. Absolutely not your industrial kid's birthday party factory that so many arcades have turned into.

Great selection of video games and great arcade games to play. Employees are super friendly. They also sell old gaming consoles, host WWE nights occasionally and also apparently let you play any game on any old gaming consoles right on scene. A place I really need to check out more because there is a LOT that is offered.

This place is great, and it makes me really happy to see it full of people on a Saturday night. Our first visit to the Waltham location was fun, but it looks like they are still getting settled in the new space. The retro game selection is very good and most of the stock is complete in box and in great condition. The staff is very friendly and prices on games are very competitive. Docking a star as I was sold a game that didn't work, and at $5 it's not really worth my time to go back and exchange. I bought

What up Jamie! I haven't been to this location yet but I know that it has to be just like the previous ones on Natick mall and the Framingham locations: Excellent customer service, great Japanese Arcades and lots of events with an excellent game store to boot. Those that leave bad reviews because of your mask requirements are Karens. (And I have reported their reviews).

I went here on a date with my boyfriend this week and was very pleased! It is well maintained and clean, as well as avoiding being too dark and creepy like many arcades. The only complaint in this area is that the bathrooms were not super clean, but they weren't awful either. Games were almost all in working condition and well maintained. A bunch of Japanese arcade games, my boyfriend loved this a lot as he recognized lots of the music and games. It is also relatively cheap at $1 for four tokens or $20 f

This is a very unique arcade. Good selection of videogames that seem to be imported from Japan.. also lots of space for board games and some console gaming set ups with large monitors. Not sure how long ago they opened this place but it looks like it's still all coming together. Definitely worth a visit and looking forward to seeing this place in it's completed state.

Wonderful game selection containing many imported rhythm games. The community is wonderful, the cabinets always in a great condition, and the pricing surprisingly cheap per game (75?!). This is a place I now frequent, even if it takes an hour drive, and recommend for everyone.

Bought a ps1,very impressed as it is very cool and works very well for a console of its age! The staff are friendly, and give their honest opinion on the consoles and games! One strange thing though,is that the disk lid for the ps1 had a label on the inside saying ?I have no guts? Besides that, game underground is an epic retro arcade and store for retro game consoles!

This place ROCKS! Pretty great selection of arcade games including Time Crisis 2 (it works now!), Initial D Arcade Stage 5, Crazy Taxi, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, DDR, Tekken 5, and plenty more. There's also a few pinball tables from Sega and Stern, skee-ball, air hockey, and some classic consoles with TVs set up in the back area if you just want to go get your Melee on. On top of the dope game selection, the games are cheap enough to keep you playing all evening, the owner is super nice, and the place i

Very happy with the growth and development of the place. Good place to buy used classics as well as game with your friends! I look forward to attending a tournament sometime soon!

Last visit was in March 2019, with a handful of other visits since they've opened. Husband and I went later on a Saturday evening. They seem to be getting more and more set up each time I visit. Back area is scattered with tables, consoles and computers available for open play and tournaments. The front has a number of arcade machines, including DDR, racing, skeeball, hoops and 3 pinball machines (and more). Arcade is run off tokens where 25c = 1 token - you get a deal if you buy $20. The space was quite bu

One of my absolute favorite places to go for rhythm games! I'm 2 hrs away in CT and often go here for my regular SMX and DDR sessions.

Went to play EDH. They gladly made some space for us and got us playing. It's just one big room with arcade cabinets, and tables of monitors. There are a lot of kids playing fortnight in this space. It's so loud. Not a bad place, super friendly and helpful staff.

I've been visiting this place since it was "underground" in the basement! The owners are super friendly and know their stuff! I think they found a really good home in Waltham and a great place for all of us nerds. They have a bunch of events, they sell old systems and games (found my copy of the phantom menace for ps1 that I lost a long time ago) and new games as well. They are much better than any GameStop I've been in. If you're a video game fan, card/board game fan, arcade fanatic, or just want to talk t

I'm almost 60 yrs old. I laughed, got my heart rate up and spent time with my friend. We played pinball.. not like the old ones... The game was faster, more lights, tracks, holes, flippers and luckily more extra balls.

The new shop in Waltham is fantastic. It's in a perfect location, and they've added pinball to their line-up of awesome arcade games. I hadn't been since the last time I was at the old location in Framingham, and I was blown away at the new space. Definitely make a trip if you haven't yet.

Probably one of the better arcades I've been to for games. It is a bit of a mess, but the price per game is low. Allowed me to cross a lot of cabinets I've always wanted to play off my list like Sound Voltex and Beatmania. Staff helped us get multiplayer sdvx going!

Great place for buying/selling retro and even modern games. Amazing employees who are very friendly. While you are there you can check out their arcade games and hosted game nights.

We love this place. Lots of used video games for sale. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. There is also arcade games to play.. They have card game (Gatherjng, Pokemon, etc) tournaments, Check it out

I've visited this location plenty of times now. The place is run by staff that are very friendly, helpful, and always willing to talk about games. Everyone working at this store plays games in their spare time (even the owner); they're quick to help with any game-related questions a customer may have. GU's forte is rhythm games. The machines are maintained by the players and are always in great shape. The games aren't current, but their rates are much cheaper than Round 1 or DnB. This is the place to go and

I have visited GU for a while; from their Framingham location to here in Waltham. This is the best iteration yet; several great pinball tables, a great selection of well maintained Bemani rhythm games, and a whole space for tourneys and MTG. I really love the sense of community, the helpfulness and kindness of the staff, and the memories I've made there learning iidx and pop n music. Great store, great local addition to Moody St.

I've been going to game underground since it's been at its previous locations in Framingham and Natick, I still to this day believe it's done well in each location. It has a great vibe, selection of video games, arcade gaming, gaming atmosphere, competitions, and more! The owner and the employees are helpful and respectful. It's my go to gaming store

Great place. The owner is very nice and inviting. The prices are pretty cheap. You can play for the whole day on everything they have in the back for 5$ on Monday afternoons. I think the standard price is 10 or 15. The machines in the front are coin operated and most everything there is a dollar. Lots of good imported rhythm games. DDR pump it up, idx, popn, jubeat, and so on. There are tournaments here sometimes two or three times a week. Everyday has some other event happening, including MTG, smash, soul

5 stars because for small independent game store/arcade it's pretty cool. Lots of classic arcade games and used games for sale. The type of place your can bring friends and family to and feel good about supporting a local business.

The Rhythm games are really fun if you're just messing around with friends. Really cool that they host tabletop Magic: The Gathering tournaments too. Though a lot of their games were not available my guess is that they're at PAX East.

Something for everyone! Part used video game store, part arcade. You can bring your own console, or use one of the store's, and rent big screens for game play. There are weekly gaming tournaments as well as Magic the Gathering events.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s it like visiting an arcade today?

It’s a mix of nostalgia and high-energy fun! Many arcades blend retro classics like Pac-Man and pinball with modern VR games, racing simulators, and rhythm challenges — often with music, lights, and a social vibe.

Is it better to go alone or with friends?

Both can be great! Solo visits let you focus on your favorite games, while going with friends adds competition, teamwork, and laughs. Many people plan arcade meetups as a casual hangout or even date spot.

What should I bring to an arcade?

Usually just yourself and a way to pay (some arcades still use coins, others use cards or apps). If you're competitive, bring your A-game. If you're social, bring friends or meet new ones over multiplayer games.

What’s the best time to visit an arcade?

Weekdays or early afternoons are usually less crowded — perfect for focused play. Evenings and weekends bring the buzz, especially at barcades or venues with DJs, tournaments, or themed nights.

Can I meet new people at arcades?

Absolutely! Arcades attract a mix of casual players and serious gamers. Whether you're jumping into a four-player co-op or chatting between rounds, it's a fun, low-pressure way to connect over shared interests.

Are arcades still just for kids?

Not at all. While many arcades are family-friendly, there are also adult-oriented ones with full bars, 18+ nights, or vintage nostalgia themes. Arcades today cater to everyone — from first-timers to lifelong gamers.

Are there events or tournaments I can join?

Yes! Many arcades host regular competitions, retro nights, cosplay parties, and more. Whether you're into high scores or just want to watch and vibe, events add an extra layer to the experience.

What if I’m not great at arcade games?

No worries — arcades are about having fun, not being perfect. Try a variety of games, ask others for tips, and remember: the vibe is more “let’s play” than “let’s win.”
