Chartroose Caboose

Chartroose Caboose

Reviews Summary

The reviews show a mixed but generally positive sentiment, with many praising the Philly cheesesteaks and friendly service. Common compliments include delicious food, good service (especially from specific staff), and nostalgic value. However, several complaints mention inconsistent quality, cold or incorrect orders, poor management, and declining standards over time. High ratings (4-5 stars) highlight tasty sandwiches and efficient service, while lower ratings (1-2 stars) cite issues like missing order components, rude staff, or unhygienic incidents. Some note the food is overpriced for portion sizes. Overall, loyal customers appreciate the classic offerings, but inconsistent experiences deter others.

Customer Reviews

Great place for a Philly cheese steak! They have a number of options so we ordered a French Dip and a special cheese steak that was chicken, bacon, ranch with pepper jack cheese. Highly recommend eating it there since the fries we ordered because limp because they were hot. We will have to go back to try more options.

I placed my order online got in a little earlier than the order pick up time. Kaden up front greeted me right away and was very nice and polite. He told me we're getting that order wrapped up now. I also heard him being very polite and respectful toward others while I was there too. Kitchen staff seemed just as awesome altho I didn't have direct contact with them they seemed to all work well together as a team. Food was delicious as always! Happy I decided to stop in for a cheesesteak. Restaurant was also

Ordered carryout and food was ready when quoted. When I went in to pick up the food they made sure we had ketchup and the steak sauce before leaving. The food was delicious and well prepared.

I haven't been here for years. The Zephyr is my go-to, and it was just as good as I remembered. I'll definitely have to make a point to eat here more often.

Had a bad experience at the Metcalf location and wanted to try this location for a second chance. If you want some steak sprinkled on bread this is the place for you. Had the same issues at the Metcalf location. For a $17 combo, I won't be back. There's better cheesesteaks around for the price.

The Philly sandwich was good but the onion rings were a little different. Seemed like they had a mozzarella cheese stick breading on them instead of a traditional onion ring batter. Otherwise the customer service was great and the price was good.

Stopped in at 1030am this morning and had The Zephyr. Cheesesteak, mushrooms and onions. Fantastic My Wife had The Chief. Highly recommend

My no onion and no cheese sandwich had, you guessed it onions and cheese. I double checked my online order, but since it was carryout, I didn't know until back at the office.

Today I found a little bit of Philly in Kansas. I had the Pennsylvania. I got it without onions, just personal preference. The bread was perfectly soft, and the meat was well seasoned. I would totally recommend this to my friends from Philly. The staff was very inviting and Isabella answered all my questions. Thank you.

Ordered takeout for a work meeting. Almost everything was tasty, missing a couple of sides and drinks. While there is loads of meat on the sandwiches it's a wee bit dry. Don't let this stop you from getting a great sandwich though!

I have tried a chicken sandwhich, the zephyr, and a veggie Sandwhich. They were all good! My son loves the cheesy-bacon fries.

Try their classic Big Chief Philly cheesesteak sandwich. I recommend it. Friendly customer service. I recommend this place and will be a returning customer.

Just got home after ordering veggie sandwiches with extra cheese to find literally no cheese on them. Just veggies and soggy bread. Honest mistake I'm sure but I don't want to drive back out there to get it remade.

Cashier and person on the fryer fantastic. Cook on the other hand didn't make my order the way I ordered it and had a nasty look on her face and seemed rude when I was putting my order in. Hopefully something can be done about this. Considering this to be my last visit might give it another go soon. We'll see.

Good philly cheese steaks. Get the fries with a side order of cheese. They also have bacon cheese fries now!

I've been going to Chartroose since the 80's. They always serve a consistent product. Nice people too.

Put in an online order with their own website (not a food app) for pick up at 11:45 as I was in a hurry. When I showed up at 11:45, they had no idea who I was or what I ordered. They finally found the order I placed and started cooking it. Didn't take long to make so that was good, however the order was wrong. Definitely did not get what I paid for, I will not be back. Sorry, I cannot recommend this establishment. I should have stuck with Lenny's or Grinders as they are WAY better.

My grandma would bring us here when I was little, my most recent visit was filled with nostalgia but much less activity in the restaurant than I remember. I ordered carry out and I assume most people do now, but I love that they still have the arcade games!

Food is always fresh and tastes amazing. The fact that my daughter says their Ranch is her favorite speaks volumes

We have come here for years and the phillys have always been good. Fries are hot and the soda machine is always clean and pop seems fresh. They have great cookies as well. The food is always made to order and ohhhh is it worth the wait. They clean up well so dining in is our favorite way to enjoy a meal. We recommend this place if your in a mood for the best philly in the city.

This was very good tenderloin and the Philly's look great, recommend highly

Our two orders of onions burnt outside raw onion. Order of chicken tenders burnt outside pink inside and even cut in half. Waste of money.

Tried this today for the first time. I had never been, so I figured I'd give it a go. The staff was super friendly and fast, even being patient as this newbie tried to decide what to have. I ultimately decided on the Super Chief combo meal. The sandwich is pretty big. It stretched the width of its takeout box. I wasn't blown away by the sandwich, but it wasn't a disaster. The bread to me was more doughy than I like, but I get that some do like that. The meat wasn't tough and was cooked all the way t

Worst tasting sandwich I tried to change it . She the lady said if I didn't like the one I had then I wouldn't like another on so I got my money back . Absolutely would not rate them . But had to leave one just to leave this review . The stuff I was severed fireball is not steak

Guy at front taking orders was great. Wanted to make sure all needs were met. Only complaint was that only had a few onion rings in container when got home. Usually have a lot. They were large though. Great food as usual and the best fries anywhere!

Really good Philly cheesesteaks. The zephyr and the super chief are my favorites.

I love the food and this place is nostalgic. Used to always go here when my friends and I would come out to ride skateboards at You Animal You. I still get a taste at Fall Fun Fest in Blue Springs when they bring out the food truck. Cool place! Give it a try.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this location. Always consistent! The ladies that work there are so friendly and amazing. The food is delicious and juicy. The condiment bar is always fresh! No disappointments here! From the food to the service it's always exceptional. I have tried another location and they don't even begin to compare! Thank you ladies for being so kind, professional and dedicated to what you do daily to provide the public with great food and great service.

Nothing special. Pretty salty, which overpowered any other flavor. Couldn't taste/detect any onions or peppers. You can get something similar (or better) when Arby's has their occasional special philly cheesesteak featured. I ordered online for carry out and they didn't have the chips that were listed. The frozen custard had the consistency of regular ice cream and the add-ins weren't great. It was all right. I'd go back if I'm really in the mood for a philly cheesesteak, no matter how mediocre.

This is absolutely the best place to get a philly in our area. They have been here longer than my 3 children, that's a long time. If you want your Philly a little different than the menu offers, just ask. I order double extra cheese and it costs me a little more, and it's not anything against them - it just makes my reheated leftovers better. You will not find a better philly in Lenexa Ks or anywhere nearby. No, I have not been paid or compensated - This is a place that I feel privileged now to be able to

What a great location with a family feel as soon as you walk in the door. The owner greets you with a smile and friendly vibe. Mama is even back there grillin up cheese steaks and they are delicious! Best I've had in long time and I'm from the east coast! I'll be back.

Sorry I don't have any pictures. The food.eas okay. I got the firecracker sandwich. I didn't think it would be that hot but it was. It was a good hot. The onion rings were some of the best I've had. They were hot, crunchy and sweet. The fries were fresh. I will go again but I will try a different sandwich.

Do NOT have your food delivered. The Doordash nor the employees at this establishment took responsibility for not delivering my drinks. Delivery driver said there was none. Employee tells me to take it up with Doordash. Never again 87th St. Location. Had great service at the Metcalf location.

10/1/2022: The 87th Street Chartroose Caboose is a local place I like to go when I don't want the typical fast food drive thru fare. Tonight has made me never want to go back. I got home with my chicken zephyr and onion rings and found a big wad of what appears to be hair or ??? in my sandwich. I should have driven back over there and lodged a complaint and gotten a refund, but sadly I just threw it in the trash. There were 3 employees there at the time I ordered and I am not confident enough in them to go

Great food, they treat their door dashes well. My girl friend left her purse in the bathroom. We called and they put her purse behind the counter for us. When we went to pick it up 2 hours later everything was Still there! A+would recommend

The veggie was a joke . I asked when ordering if sandwich bread is toasted and the cashier said it was. It was so soggy I tried eating with a fork as it was falling apart . Wasn't what I expected at all. They could not care less how disappointed at the restraunt.

Thought I would try this place since my husband liked it. Got home and the chicken is burnt the fries had no flavor. After a few bites i started choking on something, once I got it out I saw it was 2 little plastic circles. Never again will I eat here!

Made to order, if with your family, prepare to get your meals at separate times. Only one cook and she is fantastic. Place is clean, kid working the counter must be new and in training. Timing issues for sure, the food is worth the process. Great fries and cheese steaks. Come give them a try! Couple of old school video games in the back. Little trains everywhere.

Disappointing to say the least. The many good reviews made me excited to try it, but the philly (Rock Island) wasn't that great and the fries were inconsistent and cold. I ordered online and asked for it to be ready at a certain time. When I got there about 5 minutes early, it was already done which was a concern. My concerns were confirmed with the sandwich and fries (both were lukewarm, fries even cold) definitely having been prepared way ahead of my pickup time. Why even let me choose if it's going to si

The place doesn't feel too clean, but it's not apparently dirty. The food was good and I didn't see any problems in the grill area, which was visible from the ordering lane. Chartroose is known for their Philly Steak sandwiches, and they don't disappoint.

Got the Zephyr cheese steak with mushrooms and onions. Cooked fresh on delicious white roll. Fries are big and really good too. Kind of a mom and pop place. Highly recommend.

Was a bit worried when I pulled up at lunch this time and the parking lot was pretty full (work 10-15 mins away and only get an hour for lunch) but even with a line it was super quick getting food. They know how to handle the lunch rush no problem. Food was excellent as it always is. Don't make it often enough but always worth it when I do.

The Philly cheese has been a favorite of my husband. I'm not a fan of this kind of sandwich so tried their cheeseburger. So pleasantly surprised. Great BIG burger, fresh with grilled bun. Much better than burger places.

Several issues today. 1) AC was out. 2) cold Bar was out of service 3) train wasn't working 4) cook appeared to be using pre cooked meat, and just heating it up on the flat top. Something was off in there today.

Thank goodness they're open during the crazy time. Service was incredibly great. Everything extremely sanitized and safe. Food was soooo dang good. Philly's were better than ever and the chicken strips were perfect. A+++++ 100% all around!!!

The staff was disrespectful and petty. First of all I made an online order and they hadn't even started on making my food when I got there 15 minutes later. They weren't busy when I got there so there's no excuse especially when you got employees sitting around. After waiting and standing there for my food, The employees got an attitude with me because there was cheese on my philly and I didn't want any cheese. Then when they give me my new philly they were petty and gave me a 6inch instead the original 9in

The food was good. Was a little sad the train wasn't working though. And as much as I enjoyed my sandwich I can't justify spending 17 dollars (before a tip) on a sandwich/tots and a drink. If you don't care about cost then it's good.

I just had one of the worst restaurant experiences I've had in a long time. We walked into the restaurant to the front counter where three of the ladies that were working there were complaining and arguing over their manager not giving them their paychecks yet. More than once, totally unprofessional, I can't even believe it. Then when I ordered the Philly cheese steak rice bowl, they failed to tell me that they were out of most of the ingredients in so they just threw some parts of it together and handed it

This is the best Philly I've had in Kansas. That being said, the Philly I had (onions, green peppers, mushrooms) was very good. It was fixed and served exactly the way I would expect a Philly (sorry Cheese Whiz folks, but this sandwich is not for you), and the home-made fries were excellent.

The food is always good. But the last few times the booths are looking rough with cracks in seats and tonight the "available" tables were all dirty. No customer in the restaurant and when we mentioned it to an employee they shook their head and didn't volunteer to clean one or give us the things to do it ourselves. We got our food to go.

Love this place and it was pretty good when my friend worked there. I think there would be more customers if the service were better and sandwiches as consistent as they were in the past. I will still go here now and again for a philly.

The cheesesteak sandwich was really good, good mix of ingredients. Got some onion rings, there were only 5 rings but each one was about the size of the spare tires that come with most cars now. No complaints at all.

Haven't been here for over a year and stopped in today. Meat on sandwich is about half of what it used to be. No condiments to put on sandwich like A1 pickles, lettuce. Absolutely nothing! Very disappointing and will not return.

We placed an online order worth about $150 (12 sandwiches) for a group of employees. I received the order confirmation at noon with an expected delivery time within 40-60 minutes. 70 minutes later I called to see where the food was and the person who answered the phone said they were walking out the door with it. We are less than 3 miles away, yet it took another 20 minutes for the food to arrive. Once everyone got their food, we realized they forgot a complete meal, one sandwich was made wrong, and we were

The food is sooooo good! They have great people who remember you. It really makes a difference when you feel welcomed and remember. The food always tastes fresh and yummy! I would recommend this place. Kind of funky to get to but definitely worth it!

Love everything I've tried so far - it is a great fast place for a hot lunch. For EV drivers, there is also a set of charging stations in the shopping center's parking lot. That adds an extra perk to all the businesses at this location.

Dine in experience was very unsatisfactory. Waited 5 minutes and had to cough to get anyone's attention to take our order. When they did come from the kitchen it seemed like we were the inconvenience. The young man at the cash register was in a hurry to get us out of there. They could not get my husband's or my debit cards to work and then asked if we had cash. There was absolutely nothing wronf with our cards. We told them we did not have cash and then an older Hispanic woman wrote down all of my debit car

I have never had a negative experience at Chartroose. The staff is very kind and the service is quick! Thank you! The Zephyr is the BEST in my opinion.

Good food, but the service was subpar to say the least. The staff at the 87th street Lenexa location could be a little friendlier and more helpful. I literally stood at the counter waiting to be helped and was ignored by the entire staff. Then someone came in behind me for a pick-up and cut in front of me and the staff still didn't acknowledge me and began helping that person. I had to speak up saying I too was there for a pick-up and I was there first. All she had to do was hand me my bag of food that was

I placed an ordered yesterday, 9 pork tenderloin sandwiches for a group of employees. They were tasting horrible. Not even Mc Donald's sell something so gross. We asked for it to be delivered, when the delivery man made it there he asked for the tip (like we would not give it to him anyway) and just trhoug those 9 sandwiches plus a little container with some old tomatoes and a old disgusting lettuce (of course it wasn't even enough for the 9 sandwiches). I would not pay even $0.01 for it. We through all the

Mostly I like it for their french dip sandwiches still good mostly decent size the don't have Barqs red cream soda any more with they're soda fountains have Big Red soda now that it's similar to Barqs red cream soda and also still pretty expensive at this place

I've been here twice before. First time I got their cheesesteak and it was sub par. Second time I try their concretes and was disappointed again. They didn't mix in the ingredients it was more like a big sundae. And the base vanilla ice cream wasn't that great itself. So my concrete was vanilla ice cream with peanut butter on it.

Food was great. Service was slacking. To be fair, there is a bunch of construction going on in the area. Use back door!

Ordered a philly sub through doordash. I placed my order correctly. I received the wrong sandwich. I attempted to go up to the store and get a replacement sandwich where I was told my sandwich was made correctly... Even though they couldnt even see the sandwich. I was refused to get a replacement for a sandwich that I already bought. I will not return to this location due to poor management.

NEEDS MANAGEMENT BAD!! I have been eating at Chartroose Caboose for almost 20 years, ever since they had a location at Shawnee Mission Parkway and Antioch Rd. The Metcalf location is still great, and the Lenexa location used to be great, too! I have been eating there a lot since we moved back to Shawnee in 2017. Not any more. The last 3 visits have ruined it. A month ago I went in and I was the only customer there, one adult working the grill and a young man on the register who was CLEARLY more interes

Disappointed in our visit. The meat and veggies on 2 of our 3 sandwiches wasn't hot enough to melt the cheese. Sierra Mist in both fountains were out of syrup and when informed the first employee just looked away. Another employee told the first what we the probkem was and the first said something back to him under his breath.

Well a little upsetting. Lenexa location. EAT AT YOUR OWN RISK. CHECK YOUR RECEIPTS BEFORE LEAVING. GOOD LUCK IF THEY CAN FIGURE OUT HOW TO REFUND YOU. They reuse cooked already served food. *most IMPORTANT - I'd order a value Philly and the cashier called it out but didn't note it was a value Philly so when the cook went to hand it over the cashier replied it's to be a value size. The cook dumps the bread out puts it back on the toaster for next order and fills the value size bun and puts the remainder m

I have eaten there many times and this was the worst experience I have had. The sandwich did not taste good, so bad the I could not even eat the sandwich. In addition one of the sandwiches was to be in a wrap and was not. Onion rings were under cooked. I do not know what happened but will be some time before I return.

Went today to the lenexa location and we were very disappointed in the quality and the service. I get consistent service at the metcalf location every time so will go there from now on. Fries were not cooked through. The milkshake was liquid and was flavored milk. Redemption is the inside of the zypher which was why the added star.

Best Philly hands down. I was taken here by my father as a childhood treat and now I have the privilege of taking my own children to experience the Big Chief with extra cheese and mayo!??

These are excellent cheesesteaks. The portions are huge. Fast service. The only negative is that for a sandwich, side, and drink you are looking at a couple Washingtons greater than a Hamilton. Despite that, I still visit regularly for one of the best cheesesteaks in town.

Good Philly Cheese Steak. Easy menus. Worth the stop.

Yum!! Probably one of the best Philly cheestesks, if not the best. Cheese fries were a hair spicy, but I can't handle ANY kind of spice. Over all really good!!

Very unhappy the food came out cold had to have them reheat the sandwich and tots were still ice cold inside instead of new tots they put it back in the fryer and burnt them the fireball sandwich was nothing but Redhot hot sauce and you couldn't taste the meat. As we sat here eating they where giving the wrong food orders to the door dash drivers and they had to bring them back and swap with other drivers

Grabbed a couple of sandwiches with a coupon, but next time I will spend more for the tuxedo fries and more. The staff was great and professional. Very tasty food.

This is the place to go for Phillies! Lots of different options for good quality steak sandwiches. They have some model trains in the restaurant that the kids love to see. They deliver now too!

Their cheese is super salty and the prices are high, 2 people is $30, can go to Arby's and get 2 French dips with curly fries an drink for lot cheaper, and they won't forget your au jus.

They have a great cheesesteak.

The philiy cheese steak sandwiches are wonderful. Small batch french fries are crisp and hot. The burgers are good quality meat and cooked with a nice house base that renders a very tasty burger.

Good Philly cheesesteaks. I suggest the Zephyr. A little pricey for the quality, and don't expect to carry it home (the bun will get too soggy), but for eating a quick lunch with a friend, it's a nice place to stop. (The food's a bit messy for a date.)

Great little shop that isn't your normal chain restaurant. Service was fast and the food was great. Definitely in my top 5 cheesesteaks

Great service great atmosphere and absolutely fantastic food

wasn't craving a philly cheesesteak for dinner but the pics looked so good. and it was! ordered a rock island, 9", w/ bacon(come on! ya' gotta have bacon!!) in a wrap...should have gotten the hoagie though. i didn't want to fill up on bread is why i picked the wrap but i regret that choice b/c i think it would have been better in a hoagie. ordered the sweet tatoe fries and they were good. hey ya'll, just an idea but a side of maple syrup w/ the stf would have been killer!...also got an order of mozzarella s

I dont personally eat here but times ive come in here to pick up orders for door dash, usually everyone handling food is wearing gloves. Not today theres a young hispanic boy handling food, scooping sauces, sticking his finger into the food without wearing gloves. I wouldnt eat here if my life depended on it. Not with this covid 19 going on he even handled customers money not washing his hands in between.

Told the waitress their soda machine wasn't working properly. No one came to fix it or even look at it. But they did lete get a soda from cooler. Other customers came in while I was there told them hey your soda machine isn't working. Still no one did anything to check it out. Sad.

1st time eating here...OMG it was sooooo good. A bit expensive but well worth the money! Well portioned, not dry tasting! (Which I worried about) very very delicious food. I'll definitely be back again!

I used to love this place. Now it just seems run down, over priced and dry! Not to mention every single time I have carried out, they forget some component of the meal. This trip was my last trip for this location. ?

Drinks were pure syrup and they noted they were having issues with machine at the time they were poured. They forgot an order of fries and the cookie that comes with the kids meal! Tenders were burnt and placed in container straight from grease, burned plastic! We don't live that far, less than 2 miles, by the time we picked up and came home, everything was a greasy soggy mess!

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s it like visiting an arcade today?

It’s a mix of nostalgia and high-energy fun! Many arcades blend retro classics like Pac-Man and pinball with modern VR games, racing simulators, and rhythm challenges — often with music, lights, and a social vibe.

Is it better to go alone or with friends?

Both can be great! Solo visits let you focus on your favorite games, while going with friends adds competition, teamwork, and laughs. Many people plan arcade meetups as a casual hangout or even date spot.

What should I bring to an arcade?

Usually just yourself and a way to pay (some arcades still use coins, others use cards or apps). If you're competitive, bring your A-game. If you're social, bring friends or meet new ones over multiplayer games.

What’s the best time to visit an arcade?

Weekdays or early afternoons are usually less crowded — perfect for focused play. Evenings and weekends bring the buzz, especially at barcades or venues with DJs, tournaments, or themed nights.

Can I meet new people at arcades?

Absolutely! Arcades attract a mix of casual players and serious gamers. Whether you're jumping into a four-player co-op or chatting between rounds, it's a fun, low-pressure way to connect over shared interests.

Are arcades still just for kids?

Not at all. While many arcades are family-friendly, there are also adult-oriented ones with full bars, 18+ nights, or vintage nostalgia themes. Arcades today cater to everyone — from first-timers to lifelong gamers.

Are there events or tournaments I can join?

Yes! Many arcades host regular competitions, retro nights, cosplay parties, and more. Whether you're into high scores or just want to watch and vibe, events add an extra layer to the experience.

What if I’m not great at arcade games?

No worries — arcades are about having fun, not being perfect. Try a variety of games, ask others for tips, and remember: the vibe is more “let’s play” than “let’s win.”
